@Mara recommendations, you say? ;D

I'm a hardcore anime/manga fan and I have watched everything under the sun. I mean.. everything. Things I think you'll like:

1. Akatsuki no Yona aka Yona of the Dawn

Akatsuki%2Bno%2BYona%2B3.gif

GORGEOUS story, fantastic animation, hilarious, but also has its serious parts. Akatsuki no Yona is about a princess named Yona, who was well-pampered and protected by a doting father. Politics are politics and the king is assassinated, leaving Yona and her snarky-yet-sexy-as-hell bodyguard, Hak, to flee the castle. They go on this wild adventure together, gathering up the legendary four dragons that is said to aid the red dragon king, aka Yona herself. :) The characters are wonderful, and Yona has such a complex relationship with the antagonist. It's fantasy, adventure, drama, and shoujo. You can watch the entire thing on FUNimation's YT page. Only subbed atm. Oh, and did I mention this series has a wonderful soundtrack? :)

2. Shinsekai Yori, aka From the New World

b4befa6e58687a64462a3511062bbfe113488587

Listen.. this story is just.. phenomenal. I know for a fact you, Mara, will be SO into this. Being so into anthropology, this is RIGHT UP YOUR ALLEY. On top of that, it has supernatural elements, drama, and it's a thriller. HIGHLY recommend this one to you!! I just finished it a couple weeks ago, and it was amazing. One of the most underrated animes out there. I don't even think it has a manga tbh. I'm not sure, but it starts out with the protagonist's beginning life, right until her adulthood. It sets you up for this school life thing, and takes such a drastic turn, that you really have no idea how it even got to this point, but it did. So much psychology is involved with it, and the plot twists aren't big or revealing. They're very subtle, but there's a lot. It's wonderful! BASICALLY: it's about a race of humans who evolved to use more of their conscience, and their able to do amazing things like manipulate gravity, create, etc. It follows a girl who experiences the darkest aspect of life as these super humans. It follows her through pre-teens into puberty and then adulthood. She experiences a lot of trauma, but bounces back. That is her best feature, and one she is told is quite rare. Give this a look. There's so much more to this than meets the eye! Warning: it's uber depressing like 90% of the time lol.

3. No. 6

no_6_wallpaper_by_blueeyedciel-d3y0jb2.j

It's a shounen-ai, first off. ;P It won't seem that way at first, but toward the second half, as relationships develope.. yeah. It's totally a shounen-ai. Which is really great, all considering the genre doesn't have relaitonships like the one Nezumi and Shion (the protagonist) have. Basically, it's about a "utopia" (I use that term loosely here lol). The main character, Shion, is working this shitty 9-5 job, but things take a turn for the worst when Nezumi pops back up in his life and gets him in all sorts of trouble with the government. It seems like that at first, but things get complicated when there's a chance the government may actually be killing people off. Of course, there's more to that too. (: Basically, the plot is great, and the relationship between Shion and Nezumi alone makes this anime worth watching. It's not a manga per say, but actually a visual novel. And it's discontinued. Which is sad 'cause I love the story and it ISN'T FINISHED DKGBKRDFNGKTJfd.

4. Orenchi no Furo Jujou, aka This Boy Caught a Merman

67085.jpg

"Tatsumi is a high school boy who lives by himself; however, a devastatingly handsome merman named Wakasa moves into the bathtub in Tatsumi's home. Wakasa is a bit self-centered but cute, while Tatsumi is cool but a busybody." Basically.. it is what it is. Want to kill some time for like, an hour? Watch this series. It's 4 minutes long per ep, with 13 episodes total. It's absolutely hilarious. I promise you'll laugh at loud nearly every episode. It's also SUPER cute. If you're having a rough day, watch this!

At the moment, I have myanimelist profile you guys can totally check out if you wanna check into any. I'm into pretty much everything. All you have to do is click on the name and it takes you to the anime's "profile" and all that jazz. Here she is: http://myanimelist.n...ecemberlongings

since I'm as otaku (and a fujoshi) as shit, I'll gladly recommend anything genre-specified for you!

EDIT:

holy god I forgot to mention this beauty!!!!!!!!!!!!

cheez-its, man. I love this anime to BITS. The opening was what caught my eye (and for good reasons too), and one episode and I was hooked. Finished in one sitting. Basically, the concept revolves around the Buddhist beliefs of "heaven and hell" aka reincarnation and the avoid. It follows the story of Decim, an arbiter, or judge. He judges people based on their memory and how they react when they're told they must play a game to win their life back. At his side is a mysterious woman (whose name is actually a spoiler so I can't say, but she's the black haired one ;p) who assists him. Through trial and tribulation, these two form an amazing bond together, and learn about life in the process. Highly recommend!

Did I mention I love Hetalia? Each character is Hetalia is based off of a country and they are so stereotypical it's hilarious. The sheer volume of quirky nonsense snarky/sarcastic historical and cultural references makes this anime one of a kind

OMFG I JUST WATCHED THE WHOLE THING AND IT IS SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD :la: Yona has such great character development, Soo-Won is a fascinating antagonist, and Hak is such a BABE omg I'm smitten that honey scene

Why WHY WHY does the anime end after only 24 eps? I need a season 2 so badly...in the meantime I'm going to have to go and read the manga. *cries forever*

I might need to watch JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, ya know just so I can say I have. I'll probably watch it when I'm in that overtired state where everything is waaay funnier then it should be.

Just finished watching Dance with Devils, a romance/horror otome-game-style anime....that was also a musical? I have no f*cking standards anymore

tumblr_o3s3vs3Hfd1sial0xo1_500.gif
Mmm...tasty.

All things considered, it was surprisingly good (if you're a fan of the genre, that is). There were so many strange moments, but the characters were interesting, there were some amazing visuals, and the protagonist was fantastic. Usually the female leads of these types of shows are devoid of all personality (I'm looking at you, uta no prince-sama), but this chick had serious backbone. The anime ended with her taking control of her latent power and stabbing the big bad through the heart. F*ck yeah. Too bad her sexy chess-master akuma love interest had to go back to the demon realm or whatever...also it was super freaking weird that her cousin was in love with her the whole time. You reeeeaalllly need to tone down the incest, Japan. I mean, WTF.

EXCELLENT Anime/Manga. One of the best I've ever read. Fullmetal Alchemist (the manga) remains my #1 favorite, but Yona of the Dawn has taken a close second. They've produced a couple OVAs, but still no word on a season two... For those of you interested in reading the manga (which I can't recommend highly enough), it's getting posted monthly here. I link to the mobile version for a reason... the site says you're not allowed to read it when in normal mode, but allows you to read it just fine in mobile mode... so if you're reading it on an actual computer, you may not be able to click to expand the volume headers to view the chapters from that menu. You can get real technical and open developer tools to view all the hidden elements and access the links to the chapters, or you can just start at chapter one at this link, then bookmark whenever you make progress so you can get to where you left off directly.

Puella Magi Madoka Magica.

When my friend recommended this to me, I almost didn't listen to her... After all, the title just SCREAMS 'magical girl anime', and I haven't really watched any since I was a teeny bopper. Though don't get me wrong, I thoroughly enjoyed  such shows back in the day like Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Wedding Peach, Mermaid Pichi Pichi Pitch, etc, to name a few... Prolly the most recent one I enjoyed was Shugo Chara. Since then, the genre just wasn't doing much for me anymore.

But respecting the fact that my friend knows me well, I decided to give it a chance. The show showed early promise with an opening scene that was intense and trippy... then I regretted my decision to watch this show when the opening song debuted.

Doesn't get more stereotypical magical girl than that, right? But if there's one thing that's true about this show, it's that the opening is NOTHING BUT LIES. I can not express just how traumatizingly NOT like the opening it is. I ended up wishing the show was even a smidge like the opening is. 'cause then I might be able to get some sleep at night.

So why did they make such an opening and advertise the show as such? Seems like false advertising... but when you get to the end of the show, you realize that it's actually advertising one of the core concepts of the show: DECEIT. The show is made up of several layers of deceit, and with every layer than gets pulled back, you realize just how dark and twisted the plot really is and how you'd give anything to got back a layer 'cause even with how twisted and dark it was, it sure was a heck of a lot quainter than this layer.

The first layer starts out like a typical magical girl anime, so you do kinda need to suffer through the first few episodes, but the plot twists are amazing and each one makes the show better an better. I don't want to explain any further in case I give anything away, so go watch it yourself! It's only 12 episodes long and it's on Netflix. I watched the Japanese version, so I can't vouch for the English version - hopefully they didn't change much. I binge watched this show in two days and it was totally worth it. The ending leaves you enough to think about while still tying up loose ends, and I think overall it conveys its themes solidly. Themes of friendship (it was still rather shojo in this aspect, but so much deeper than the usual), equivalent exchange (maybe I like it because it echos Fullmetal Alchemist in that manner), deceit, and even some deep philosophical stuff like the value of life and the debate between 'the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few' or perhaps the value of a single life and its potential to impact all life.

Disclaimer: like most magical girl animes, there is a bit of fanservice, so brace yourself for some good old sailor-moon-style nude outlines and some panty shots. All in all, it's not nearly as bad as many others out there though, but still, just a warning if you're sensitive to that.

Cannot recommend the Shadows House manga highly enough. It's a strange, twisted, slow-burn mystery with a great cast of core characters and beautiful artwork. Whatever you're expecting from the opening chapters, this story will subvert your expectations. The scanlations are rough at first, but a better translator takes over later. Check it out!

I've been wanting to watch that new anime Dandadan but wanted to wait until it starts its hiatus so I can watch a good amount of eps.

Just kidding, I already watched the first two episodes when I went to my cousin few weeks ago and I'm so excited to officially start it <3 Okarun seems like another character I'll relate too so much.

I’ve been watching Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End. I’m currently 10 episodes in.

So far, I would say it’s good. I think it has a really great premise, and the emotional scenes are very effective.

That said, I don’t feel like I really get what the massive hype around it is all about. I started it, because everyone kept talking about it as the new great anime, and it seemed to be near the top of a lot of lists, and I’m not really seeing why…

I do like it though. There’s something oddly… calming about it, and as I said, the idea behind it is really good.
