Saw The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies last night. Like the first two, I found it highly enjoyable. I can see where people are coming from when they say these movies are too long and didn't need to be 3, but I don't mind the length. I actually like the additional action stuff (though I think the chase scene between the Dwarves and Smaug in the second film should have been cut down).
The fight scenes in the film were fantastic (but, what else would one expect from Peter Jackson), and even contained some fun slapstick comedy moments.
The scene in the beginning with Smaug attacking Lake Town, and Bard attempting to shoot him down was one of the best-looking scenes I've ever seen on film (I kinda wish it had been a bit longer), and really got me pumped right away.
The best scenes though, in my opinion, were the scenes between Bilbo and Thorin. They were very emotionally effective, and I just loved Thorin's whole arc in this movie.
The acting all across the board was great - Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen (duh), Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Evangeline Lilly, even Orlando Bloom. And the other dwarves, Balin and Dwalin in particular, did a good job expressing their confused emotions.
And of course, I loved the tie-ins to
The Lord of the Rings.
Now... The stuff I DIDN'T like:
The romance - This was something I didn't like in the second movie, and unfortunately it continues here. I really don't mind Tauriel as a character. She's a badass, and independent, and portrayed well by Evangeline Lilly. I would probably really like her if it wasn't for the romance thing. I guess they don't really focus on it that much in this... but it still feels dumb and unnecessary. It doesn't even really lead anywhere...
Alfrid - They should have just killed him off early on. I'll admit, he got a chuckle out of me the first time he appeared dressed as a woman, but for the most part I just found his antics rather tiresome, and they focused on him way too much, without any real payoff even. I feel like it might have been worth it if he actually DID grow a pair in the end... But no. He was just comic relief that wasn't funny or likeable.
I was also a bit disappointed they didn't include Bilbo's song from the book at the end ("The road goes ever on and on...")
Peter Jackson' Middle Earth, and Korra... both over now...
