OK, so if it's a recessive trait (meaning you need two copies of the allele to be a bender), then how could Aang and Katara have produced a non-bender? Likewise, unless the "bending" gene isn't discipline specific, how could say, two parents produce a firebender and an earthbender? If it's actually autosomal dominant, then it should run in families, but it obviously doesn't (since neither of Katara's parents were waterbenders). Unless there are multiple influencing genes that interact somehow...I am confused.
~*Mara*~ = ^.^ =
It's most likely a case of Bryke not fully understanding genetics, but the theory of multiple genes determining bending would also make a lot of sense. I think hair and skin color are determined by several genes, since people in the same family can all have different shades of the same color of hair. Take my family for example. There are seven of us: my mom has really light brown hair, my sisters Sharon and Natalie have medium light brown, I have dark brown, and my dad, Carol, and David have super dark brown/almost black. And then with our skin colors, we're all pale but my mom and Sharon are the only ones completely incapable of tanning (not that the rest of us tan all that much, with the exception of my dad's face and arms, which are way darker than the rest of him lol).
AAAAAGHHHHHHHHHHHH THAT EPISODE AGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
Spoiler
So let's recap: -Meelo fartbends (we all knew it was possible) -Ikki is a snot -Korra struts around in the snow wearing only a tank top like a frickin' southern water tribe BOSS -Metalbender cops are apparently incapable of questioning their orders -The entire plot is basically a metaphor for the war on terror now -Tarrlok is the Umbridge to Amon's Voldemort -TARRLOK IS A MOTHERFUCKING BLOODBENDER HOLY SHIT I DIDN'T SEE THAT COMING -AWESOME DARK FIGHT SCENES INCLUDING AN URBAN CAR CHASE AIDED BY BENDING afgjkafjkjdalfjiksfnkauirfkjcds <- that's a word now
Quality, quality shit. One thing, though... I know this isn't exactly a popular opinion, but I'm convinced that this series would be SO much better without the romantic subplots. They really, really bother me (which is unusual - I normally love all that crazy shipping crap). But in Korra it's just so forced and awkward and unnecessary...
I'm also kind of disappointed with how little "Team Avatar" is capable of achieving. In the original series, Toph and Katara and Sokka (and later Zuko and Suki) had SUCH a profound impact on the plot, such deep relationships with each other, and such incredible bending prowess, that Korra's friends seem lacking in comparison. Honestly, Asami is the one who gets the most done. Bolin at least provides lulz, but other than that he and Mako just get...captured. And occasionally provide bending backup. They get very little separate character development or influence over the storyline other than in how they affect Korra emotionally. I don't mean that they should WIN all the time, just that they should get some of their own plotlines, agendas, and fights, cause right now they really don't stand on their own.
And Mako. Mako is SOOOOOOOO BOOOORRRRRIIIIIINNNNG. I was hoping they'd develop his character to be "the smart guy" in the group, but no. Nothing. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I've actually come to hate him. I hate how fans constantly bitch out Asami for the crime of "getting in the way of Makorra". Mako is the least interesting character in the series, in my opinion, and I hate how the writers keep forcing the languishing glances between him and Korra. Ugh. What do they have in common? Nothing. And they never seem to actually ENJOY being around each other. And don't you love how Mako flirts with Korra RIGHT IN FRONT OF ASAMI? Classy, bro. God, I really wanted Asami and Korra to be bff's...if that's ruined because they're both after Mako, I'll just...ugh. He's not worth it, girls.
My friend Tim and I were talking about how you could basically substitute a Mako-shaped rock in the role of Mako and it'd be about as interesting. In fact, you know what would be awesome? If Mako had been killed by the same firebender who killed his parents, and Bolin went everywhere with a rock-statue of his dead brother, talking to it as if Mako were still alive, and even making it "fight" sometimes. Tragic, but cooler than what they've got now. Yes, that's right ladies and gentlemen, Mako would be more interesting AS A ROCK.
Man, I've really got to stop letting this bother me so much. Breathe, girl, breathe. So what if pretty much ANY other pairing is more interesting than Makorra? Just ignore it, and move on...
BESIDES, WE ALL KNOW WHAT THE TRULY IMPORTANT EVENT IN THIS EPISODE WAS. WE SAW TAHNO'S FEMALE TWIN!! Or perhaps Tahno just has a hobby

NO FULL MOON!!!! DA FUQ???
AND MORE FLASHBACKS MMMNNNNGGGG HE'S RELATED TO YAKONE, ISN'T HE?????
One more random thing...I'm kinda bummed Korra doesn't use waterbending more often. It IS her native element, and is my favorite type of bending to watch. Like, why was she punching those ice shards when she could've just turned them all back to liquid water again? I don't get it...
P.S. Korra needs to learn airbending just so she can do this to Bolin's hair:

I kinda wondered about that, too. Maybe it's another thing about personality? Even though water is he native element, her personality is more geared toward earth and fire bending, so she'd probably find those more useful or reliable. And I agree about Bolin's hair.
Wow, Mako is such a jerk. Way to give two shits about your girlfriend, douche. And way to be INCREDIBLY POSSESSIVE - he tells all of Korra's other friends to "give her space" ('cause you know, they might not be worried/relieved or anything), but it's totally OK for him to go all grabby? WTF? What an unhealthy relationship.
Lin Beifong is so cool I can't even quantify it. She friggin ZIPS MEN'S FLIES with her metalbending.
Sokka is still Sokka. Toph is still Toph.
Aang got...more serious? Come on Aang, smile and wiggle your eyebrows!
WHERE THE HECK IS KATARA in the flashbacks? Why doesn't she have a statue? Was she even in Republic City?
"I am the solution". Is it bad that I kind of think Amon is sexy?

How was Mako acting like a jerk? He was worried sick about his best friend (possible love-interest) who has been kidnapped and is in danger. Bolin was the one who was blabbing about how Mako is in love with Korra and how they kissed earlier. As for him telling everyone to give her space. She had just escaped from the clutches of Amon and Tarrlock. He didn't want everyone surrounding her with questions about what she had just been through. She was tired and worn out, so of course Mako didn't expect her to walk. He was just being a caring friend.

I actually agree with this, despite my main LOK pairing being Makorra. I mean, he pretty much made out with Asami, and then immediately was all hell-bent on saving Korra. Not that saving Korra is a bad thing, but I mean really? I get you're confused dude, but show some more consideration to your girlfriend, like you did two episodes ago. The hell?

I KNOW. Total win! And I LOLed like crazy when Bolin was like "I don't want you to hear me!"
Sokka is still Sokka. Toph is still Toph.

Maybe she was back home? Because I think that Toph said something about "Why are you hear?" which I interpreted to mean "Why are you in this city?" ie--Aang and Katara do not live in Republic City. So she was probably home with the kids. Zuko and Suki weren't there either.
"I am the solution". Is it bad that I kind of think Amon is sexy?

LOL NOT BAD.
I saw Amon resisting the bloodbending almost effortlessly and had to resist the urge to scream "LIKE A BOSS!" because my roommate was still in the room with me

If Mako was really a 'caring friend', he wouldn't have threatened to end his friendship with Korra simply because she was doing her Avatar duties and investigating Hiroshi Sato. He wouldn't have called her "crazy" on multiple occasions either. Remember that he kissed Korra and CONFESSED HIS FEELINGS FOR HER while dating Asami, and then DIDN'T TELL ASAMI ABOUT IT. She had to find out from Bolin. This makes Mako a cheater, cheater, pumpkin-eater. I know Korra wasn't in the right for kissing him either, but she wasn't the one in a pre-existing relationship. Mako needs to man up and choose a woman, not make out with one and obsess over the other.
Mako has demonstrated on more than one occasion that he likes making decisions for women. When Asami wanted to find out the truth about her father, he told her to stay behind like a good useless girl and "let him find out for her". This isn't chivalry, this is assholery. It's HER goddamn father. She has a right to see for herself - and it's a good thing she decided to, because she ended up saving all their sorry asses. Then, after the Amon-Tarrlok debacle, he just assumed that he knew what Korra wanted and decided to carry it out for her. Even if he was correct in assuming that she wanted space, it was presumptuous of him to cast himself in the "I am the one who takes care of Korra" role. It wasn't a caring act, it was a possessive one. If anything, Tenzin should have been the one to step in, since he honestly has a closer relationship with Korra than Mako does.
This whole "love triangle" thing is a stupid writing device used to build up artificial tension in a relationship that otherwise has very little substance. The setup isn't interesting - it makes Mako look like a jerk, and it shortchanges Asami's character as well. If the writers wanted to craft a compelling relationship between Mako and Korra, they should have given him more character development and made the "we can't date each other yet" obstacle something to do with their respective personalities, belief systems, or positions in life, rather than just some poor girl who could easily be dumped and thus resolve the whole situation. It's so frustrating, and pointless. The shipping nonsense does nothing but detract from the plot because it's not handled in a way that reveals anything positive or interesting about the characters to the audience.
Getting a little carried away with the whole thing, aren't you? Honestly, I'm not big on the whole shipping thing either. I never was with the previous show either. Though, I did enjoy the couple moments, the whole thing that killed it for me was the fans. That's why I left the Avatar boards because I got tired of reading arguments and debates about people over-analyzing the situations they're all in and trying to convince others why this character should be with that character or why this couple isn't good for each other. Reading all this just kills the whole show for me and I can never enjoy the other things about the show that are even more enjoyable than who ends up with who. Sorry Mara, I can counteract all that stuff you just said, but I won't cuz to me, all that is just over-analyzing.
I'm not "getting carried away", I was offering a counterpoint to the point you made. And as far as over-analyzing goes...well, I'm an author. If I didn't analyze the heck out of this stuff, I wouldn't be a good writer. I pull apart stories because I like looking closely at the component parts and seeing what works and what doesn't work. And I wasn't making an argument about who was good for whom, I was saying that ALL the romance crap was poorly handled and detracted from the plot. As in, I'd rather not have any romance at all.
Anyway, if you don't like digging deeper, just don't come on this topic. Easy peasy lemon squeezy.
WHAAAAAT? MAKO WHY ARE YOU ON THE GROUND? DID AMON TAKE YOUR BENDING AWAY? WHAT HAPPENED? WHAAAAAT HAPPEEEEENNNNED?
Pfft, who cares? I want to find out what Amon's doing to Korra! I am so ready for their epic showdown Also the mask on the Aang statue looks hilarious.
