Chapter 31 ~ Because of Me

Libby and Louis were quite surprised when the boy flew through the portal and both of them ran to his side and helped him steady himself from the weight of the real world.

“I’m so glad you’re alright!” Libby exclaimed gleefully to see her friend safe and sound again. Her brown eyes looked down on him tearing with happiness and relief as she pulled him into a hug. Jimmy missed being able to hold someone…Libby’s comforting embrace made Jimmy smile. He tried to forget all the problems they had and just stay frozen in Libby’s arms forever, but he knew that couldn’t happen. He would have to tell them.

“I’m so delighted to finally meet you!” Louis exclaimed, just about as joyfully as Libby. Jimmy slowly pulled out of Libby’s loosening embrace and looked up at Louis.

“I’m delighted to meet you, too, Louis. Officially, of course.” Jimmy said, his voice returning.

“How do you know my name?” Louis asked.

“Well…I’ll explain later. Right now we’ve got a bigger problem,” Jimmy said, courageously. “Cindy hasn’t come back, as you may have noticed. That’s because the realm of dreams, where I was for that time, needs one soul at all times. Once it has one, of course…Cindy…she can’t come back unless someone else is there to take her place…”

Libby shook her head, her eyes wide and teary. “No…no, it can’t be! It can’t be like that! Cindy’s gotta come back! We…we…no…” Libby tried so hard to deny Jimmy’s words, tears once again rolling down her cheeks.

Jimmy looked at Libby, his eyes sad and his hand on her shoulder comfortingly. “It’s okay,” he murmured, knowing full well that it was the farthest thing from ‘okay’.

Libby pointed this out, “What are you talking about? It’s not okay! My best friend is trapped in there! We’ve got to save her! There has to be a way!”

“I’m sorry. So sorry,” Jimmy whispered.

Louis looked at the portal, an unreadable expression on his face. He looked sad, but he also looked torn, and deep in thought…a little guilt flickering behind his eyes.

“This is my fault.” Louis didn’t look away from the array of dazzling colors from the portal. “I built the ray, I should be the one in there…” he whispered.

“No, Louis, no. This isn’t your fault.” Jimmy tried. “You don’t deserve to be in there.”

“Yes, I do.” Louis persisted. “I deserve that and more for building that thing…it’s caused three children to feel so much sadness. More than anyone should have to feel…and it’s all because of me.”

Chapter 32 ~ Take My Hand

Cindy listened to her friend’s conversation, feeling all the ghost that she had become. She didn’t cry, but she could feel her heart aching and her throat tightening.

“Don’t do it, Louis. Don’t do it.” she thought.

“Cindy chose to go in my place. That was her decision.” Jimmy said, bravely, convincingly, but Louis’ expression didn’t change.

“Yeah, Louis. Please, don’t do this. Nobody deserves it…and since…since Cindy chose to stay there…you should honor her wishes…” Libby seemed to have cried herself out, but still her voice sounded as if her throat was tighter than ever.

Louis stood silently, reverently, as if he was pondering all this. He didn’t speak, he hadn’t since he stated that he deserved to be in the dark, dreamy void forever in Cindy’s place. He turned to Libby and Jimmy. “Someone has to go. Who will it be?” Louis musical voice turned these simple words into a heartbreaking song.

A shiver ran up Cindy’s spine. She knew that Louis was going to try to get himself into the dream realm, and she wouldn’t let him do that. “Me.” Cindy whispered into Louis’ ear. ”Don’t do it, Louis. I made the choice to save Jimmy or die trying the night I found him dead. You have no reason to feel like you deserve to die. You deserve to be loved. To be revered. To tell this story. Louis, I will always remember you as the person who has a heart bigger than anyone I’ve ever known. Please forgive me from getting you into this situation. Thank you for trying to save me, but I’ve already made my decision and anyone can tell you that I am the most headstrong person you’ll ever meet. Please. For me, just remember me the way I was tonight. Strong, kind, brave, powerful. And, always remember that I love you.”

Louis heard Cindy’s heart tugging words and he was sure that Jimmy and Libby did as well. Louis sat down on a metal desk chair and sighed. He looked up at Libby and Jimmy. “You hear that?” he asked. Jimmy and Libby nodded yes. Then Cindy’s voice echoed through the room again. This time, the speech was directed at Libby.

”Libby…” Cindy started, whispering. “You are and always will be, my best friend. You stuck with me through the good and the bad. I need you to be here for me now. I need you to live. If you don’t I think that my heart may explode from too much despair. Can you do that for me?” Cindy asked.

Libby nodded, smiling her sad smile.

Cindy’s words turned to be directed at the boy she had given her life for. ”Jimmy? …I’m sorry. For everything. I know that words couldn’t possibly cover all the things that I did to you. But, know that I am genuinely sorry for everything that I had done to you in the past. I hope my actions today can show you that. …and also…I need you to know that I’ve always loved you. Always. And that’s not changing anytime soon.”

Jimmy bit his lip. He had no idea how to react to that. “I forgive you. And I love you, too.”

Cindy stepped towards Jimmy, wanting nothing more than to feel the warmth of his hand in hers, but then she realized something…if she was to touch him, he would fog and fade. And she wasn’t sure what that could do. But, still, her hand still moved slowly towards him…

She reached for his hand and…
