Chapter 1 ~ Pain and Guilt
Cindy stood in stunned silence, as he lay there lifeless.
Libby stood solemnly by her side, tears running down her cheeks when she saw the heart-breaking expression on Cindy's face. She looked shocked and guilty. Like her soul had been ripped out of her. For good reason, as in a way, it had.
I...I never got to say goodbye...I never got to say anything... Cindy thought bitterly as she knelt down beside him. Tears stinging her eyes as she held his cold hand to her damp cheek. Her eyes squeezed shut, tears leaking out.
Libby sat down next to her and hugged her. There was nothing more they could do.
Cindy squeezed his hand, hoping a miracle could happen. But, knowing, in the back of her mind that it was a vain attempt.
When Libby stole a look at Cindy’s tearful, sorrowful, emerald eyes, she knew Cindy would never get over this. Libby knew she probably wouldn't either. More tears came to Libby’s sad brown eyes.
If this was how bad I’m hurtin' then how bad must Cindy be feelin'? I think she really loved him, Libby thought. This can't be the end. It just can't.
Even though I know he’s gone, I can't believe it, Cindy thought. Him of all people. Why him and not me? I deserve it after the way I treated him. Now I half-expect him to wake up and yell, "What's with the waterworks, Vortex? Naptime already?" Then, we'd break out into another word war. I didn't want it to be this way that's just the way it worked out. I will never make the same mistakes I did. Never. I don't care about the competition. I don't want to be the best. Not anymore.

It’s all my fault, it’s all my fault, Cindy blamed herself over and over again. I just wanted revenge, because he got a trophy for getting his "100th Highest Grade in the Country". I went to Eustace Strych. BIG mistake. I regret that now. He told me, "I'll take care of it, don't you worry!" Little did I know that I was asking him to go and...And...
Cindy cried harder and harder as she glanced at his pale face. Pained, like Eustace was still torturing him. Like he was nothing.
Cindy thought back to that fateful day, "Eustace! We didn't agree on this!" I yelled to Eustace in his rocket above me. "Weelll, weellll, if it isn't little Miss Cynthia Vortex. The little BRAT who was FOOL enough to fall for the old tricks again!" he yelled down to me. "You won't win! He beat you before, he'll do it again!" "Aww, you're boyfriend won't win this time!" "He's not my boyfriend and he WILL win!" "We shall see about that!" Then he blasted away... and then, he did it.
Eustace found him...and that's where he left Cindy, Libby and his lifeless body. Hit by Eustace's 'Revenge Ray'. Newly created by his top scientists to destroy his enemies.
Suddenly, Cindy was struck with a brilliant thought.
I have to get that ray! She thought.
Cindy suddenly lifted her head abruptly and said happily, "I know what to do!"
"What?" Libby asked, unstably since she had been crying for so long.
“You ready to go kick some fancy boy butt?" Cindy asked her with a grin.
Cindy had a plan. Strych was going down!

The Revenge Ray is a horrible weapon, given to Eustace by his scientists at the Strych labs. The scientists spent a very long time designing it and they still weren’t absolutely sure what it did. But since it robbed things of life, they told Eustace that this ray would instantaneously kill anything that it shocks. Cindy knew this because Eustace bragged to her about it before he …well, you know. Cindy now thought that if they could get it and reverse the effects of the gun then, it should bring him back to life. Too bad they didn't have a genius to help them this time...
The determined girls headed for Strych's mansion to face that rich boy scum of a kid.
"Ahhh...I had a feeling I'd be seeing you girls again." Strych said, his grin sickening.
"You're going down fancy pants!" Libby yelled.
Eustace raised the ray and shot it at Libby’s head. She narrowly dodged it, hoping Cindy was okay.
"You aren't going to get away with this!" Cindy yelled.
"Who's gonna stop me? He's dead! Get over it!" he said.
"I'll fight you as long as it takes. I want that ray, Strych," she said in a tone that shown with her motivation.
"You're not getting this ray it cost my father $500,000,000! That's two whole weeks allowance!"
"That's wack!" Libby yelled, disgustedly.
Cindy was now pulling the ray away from Strych.
"Fine, you want the ray? Here you go!" He shot the ray at Cindy, who dodged it easily. "What? Don't want to join you're silly, nerd boyfriend?"
"He's not silly, or a nerd...or my boyfriend." said Cindy her cheeks turning very red.
"Aww...the little BRAT is embarrassed about her little crush!" said Strych.
"I...I" she stammered.
Oh no! His stupid comments were getting to her! Libby thought. "Cindy, watch out!" she screamed and pulled her out of the way of another revenge ray blast.
"Thanks, Libby. I owe you one!" she said.
"We can take this bucktoothed dork!" Libby said, making Cindy grin.
"It's kinda hard to ignore him when he says stuff like that." Cindy sighed.
"Just stay focused and don't listen to him. Ignore him like you ignore Sheen! You ignore him all the time!" Cindy giggled.
"Sorry to break up you're party...wait actually I'm not sorry!" Strych pushed us to ground and said, "Say hello to Neutron for me!" Then, he aimed and fired.

This whole thing is very fuzzy to me. Cindy thought. I remember everything went white. Libby and I screamed. We were so petrified by fear we couldn't move. Then time seemed to stand still and I heard a faint voice from somewhere very far off. The voice was familiar, but I couldn't tell whose voice it was but then I was zapped back to reality and I was safe in my bedroom. Did I imagine that whole thing? Was I going to wake up in Ms. Fowl's class and get in trouble for falling asleep in class? Cindy pinched herself. She was awake. Whose voice was that? I could only remember one thing the voice had said "Don't give up! Hope and love, are the most precious things in the world. Don't lose them...don't lose them...whatever you do, don't lose them..."
"Don't lose them..." Cindy whispered. "Don't lose them..."
"Cindy?" Libby called to her empty bedroom. "Cindy?"
Was that a dream? Where was Cindy? She was with me, right?
"Honey?" my mom said peering through the half opened door. "What's going on? I didn't see you come in. Whatever, dinner's ready."
"Okay." Libby agreed, blankly as she walked down the stairs.
The voice, what was it saying? Something about being strong? No, it was something like, ''Don't give up hope'' or something like that. Whose voice was that? I don't know. Too many questions, not enough answers.
Libby trudged down the stairs, her legs like cinder blocks.
Today was so confusing. Emotions flowing out of you left and right.
She ate her salad without a word, her mind racing.
I’m getting no sleep tonight!

I don't want to wake up, but I don't want to stay asleep, all I can see is the crystal white of the Revenge Ray and a sweet tickle of a whisper on my ear. Whispering just quiet enough, so that no one but me could hear. Strong arms carrying me back to my bedside...I don't want to wake up from this sweet dream, but if I don't, then we will all be doomed...
Cindy lay in her bed. Not quite awake yet, but not still dreaming; a state which now ripped her apart.
But another being was in a state worse. One of confusion; they boy thought out loud, Cindy? Why are you crying? I'm right here. I haven't gone anywhere. Hello? Why can't you hear me? What is going on? I feel fine, but it's like I don't exist. No one can hear me. I'm invisible and silent...
Am I...dead?
The boy’s realization showed on his face. He looked sadly at the girl, not yet awake, but no longer in the realm of dreams.
He stepped over to her and whispered in her ear.
Please, help me.

I still hear the voice inside my head it's like an echo that I can't quite make out...I think he.... it.... the person that saved us, is trying to communicate with me...I wonder who, what, saved us? We were dead. But then, our guardian angel came. Brought us back home save and sound. It's amazing how much you can learn from a dream! Cindy thought amazed at last night’s dream.
Over at the Folfax residence, Libby too, was waking up, only from a more restless night in bed. Thinking, almost all night about yesterday’s events.
I have the worst headache, Libby thought bitterly. I wonder if it had anything to do with the fact that we almost, you know, DIED, yesterday!
Libby exhaustedly made her way down the stairs to have her breakfast.
"Hey, sweetie! How did you sleep?" asked Mrs. Folfax sweetly, who was making waffles.
"Fine." Libby mumbled, exhaustedly.
"You want any breakfast? I bought some more syrup," Mrs. Folfax suggested.
"Sure," Libby said, perking up a bit. At least my stomach won't hurt anymore, Libby thought positively.
She ate her breakfast in silence, and then told her mother she was going to Cindy's.
If Cindy was still around that is...

“Libby! I'm so glad you're here!" Cindy exclaimed.
"I'm so glad you aren't dead!" said Libby, with equal happiness.
Cindy and Libby hugged each other, glad that we could feel the others pulses beating.
"I don't know what happened last night, do you?" Cindy asked.
"I don't know! I was thinking about it all night and now I have a massive headache!" Libby complained.
"I had a dream about it last night." Cindy said, breaking the giddy mood.
"What about?" asked Libby, seriously.
"Well," I started. "I was being carried back to my house by...um...well I don't know who or what it was exactly but, I think it may have been an angel..."
Libby stood with me on the sidewalk in front of my house, her eyebrows furrowed in thought. "It could have been, I guess." she said.
"I wonder who or what it was."
"Yeah...then we could thank him...it...whatever saved us last night."
"You think it was your guardian?"
"Huh?"
"Your guardian. Like your guardian angel." Libby explained.
"Wait a minute!" Cindy said. "I know who it was!"
I just sat on the front step of the house watching them, knowing that they couldn't see, hear, or sense my presence, and smiled. I knew who it was, too.

"Are you sure?" Libby asked.
"I'm positive!" said Cindy, who sounded very positive despite the fact that we were just put in the most hard to understand experience of their lives.
"If you say so, I guess." Libby said not sounding nearly as positive as she did.
"Don't you see Libby? It all makes sense!"
"Somehow, us being shot by a death ray and ending up in our bedrooms doesn't make all that much sense."
"Well, think about it! He was shot by the same ray as us and if I'm right, that ray doesn't actually kill you it..." Cindy started.
"What kind of death ray doesn't kill you? This is ridiculous now. If it didn't kill you, why was it called a ‘death’ ray!”
"That's my point! It's not a death ray at all! It's a...sort of.... transporter ray! It transported him to the dimension we were sent to when we were shot by the gun!"
"Then how come we are back in our universe and not there?"
"I haven't quite gotten that far yet...I think he saved us...like in my dream. He's watching over us Libby. I know he is."
The boy smiled. They did it. Maybe he wasn't doomed after all.

"Okay, Cin. It's great you figured all this out, but what do we do now?" Libby asked.
"I don't know. I was sorta hoping you'd have some idea." Cindy said.
"Well, if you're right, then he's still in that alternate dimension," said Libby.
"Yeah," Cindy agreed.
"And he's probably trying to get out, right?" Libby continued.
"So we have to find out a way to help him! He saved us, now we have to save him!" Cindy said, passionately.
"Sorry to ruin your little moment, but one question, how?" Libby asked.
Cindy’s brow furrowed in deep thought. She honestly didn't know. She stared into space blankly for a moment. She had run out of ideas. This was bad because, Cindy never runs out of ideas.
Maybe this was a sign, Libby thought, gravely. Maybe we weren't meant to go this alone...maybe we're doomed.

"Libby, we have to find a way," Cindy said, her will power stronger than steel. "Did you hear a voice last night?"
"Yeah but I couldn't tell what it was sayin'. A little too quiet so I couldn't really hear." said Libby.
"I heard it. I heard it perfectly. It sounded like it was said in a whisper, but, like it was whispering to me." Cindy said.
"It was probably him whispering to you. It makes sense, if he was the one who saved us."
"Now that you mention it, the voice did sound really familiar, I was just too drowsy to think of who it was."
"I was kinda sleepy the whole time too." Libby said. "Do you think that could mean anything?"
"I don't know." Cindy answered.
"Do you remember what the voice said?" Libby asked, curious.
"Um..." Cindy started. She was kind of reluctant to tell Libby, but she knew she had to. "Don't give up. Hope and love are the most precious things in the world. Don't lose them." She recited like she had heard it a second ago. She didn't even hesitate.
Just then the girls heard something.
"Don't give up." a voice said.
This time they knew who it was. They didn't know how he did it, or how he knew they needed to hear that, but they were glad he did. It proved that they weren't just dreaming, and this was worth trying.
And another reminder not to give up.

Despite our confusion on all of this, at the end of the long day the pair of young heroes had the situation pretty much figured out.
I know Cindy understands it better than me, Libby thought, the whole dreams and voices from nowhere and crossover dimensions junk, and I know how hard she's tryin. I jus hope I can help her do it. ‘Cause, I'm not sure two normal preteen girls can reverse death. But then again, us Retroville kids aren't famous for being normal.
Libby seems to think that I have all the answers. I don't, Cindy thought sadly. I don't really understand any of this. I don't know why, but my mind keeps going over the same thing, the voice. I can't get it out of my head. Now that I think about it I can tell who it is, it's just; I have never heard him like that before. He wouldn't ever say that. Especially not to me. And he also seems really sad and like he can't really talk. Maybe that's why he was whispering. That would mean that we probably don't have much time left. We have to hurry! Enough with analyzing the mystical junk, we have to do something!
Cindy jumped to her feet at this thought. Then, her smile fading as she sat back down she thought,
.... But, what?

“We have to stop this." Cindy said.
"What?" asked Libby.
"This, sitting around doing nothing but thinking. I think the voice was a sign! We have to go do something!" Cindy’s determination spun heavy into her desperate tone.
"But what? We have already tried to get the ray from Strych. You remember how well that worked out," Libby said.
Libby was right. The girls couldn't try to get the ray from Eustace again. He was too powerful to take on. They would have to try a different approach. They could try to make their own ray, but they didn't know how. They'd have to get the plans for it. Which means we'd have to talk to Strych's scientists. And Cindy knew just who to talk to!
"Libby? I've got a plan!"

Cindy and Libby had decided after 6 hours of debating and thinking that they should try Cindy's idea of going straight for the source instead of trying to get the ray directly from Strych.
"Bye, Cin!" called Libby as she walked down the street to her house.
Cindy felt pretty good about her plan even though somewhere in the back of her mind, her logic was telling her that taking this chance wasn't going to be a good thing. She ignored it, because that was the best that they could do and at this point And, Cindy was so desperate that she was willing to try just about anything, even if it could mean she was going to die for it. It was worth it. He was worth it.
Cindy felt a pressure in her throat and she felt her eyes tearing at her thoughts, memories came to her as the tear rolled off her cheek and splashed onto her doorstep. She suddenly remembered the island, the pearl, Valentine's Day, and the first day he came into our class. She remembered the bitter-sweetness of his arrival. She had felt a deep conflict when he came along. She could either protect her position or forget her position. She made a bad decision. The wrong one. And standing on the front porch of her house she knew that, as she knew it the second she saw his smile and the second she drowned in his sapphire blue eyes.
He wouldn't die. She would make sure of it.

"What do you want?" he asked the girl that he wished he would never see again, much to his dismay; there she was on his doorstep again.
"Please! Let me IN!" Cindy yelled to the closed door. "I know you are in there! Please, just let me in! I need your help! This is a life and death matter this is no time for hiding away and pre-pretending your not there,” she sniffed a little to emphasize her point and make him feel guilty as she knew he would.
NO! She did NOT just sniffle! She is tough as nails! She must be in huge trouble. I guess she's not lying. Well maybe, it could be a trick, or she could be telling the truth and she...I guess I have nothing to lose, the man thought, a bit bitterly.
His hand trembled and jerked violently as he grasped the cold metal doorknob. He turned it bracing myself for impact of her fury.
"Yes?" he asked hiding his uncertainties.
Cindy looked a bit different than the last time he saw her. Her electric eyes lost their spark. She seemed tamer and the wildness of her personality disappeared. She was less intimidating. She was fading. He didn't know if she knew or not.
She calmly walked into the bare living room. She sat on the couch without a word and the man sat in his armchair. Watching her every mild movement. Waiting for her voice to ring in my ear as it usually did but prepared to listen for a whisper. But she said nothing. She was prepared to wait and so was he.
The silence in the room paused time. She gazed at him with a blank look. He watched her, waiting for the slightest expression.
But then she did something he had never seen her do.
Her blink caught a drop that rolled down her face and she didn't wipe it away or try to hide it from him.
She just smiled at his astonishment. He looked away sheepishly and when I turned my head around flashed her a similar grin. She smiled broader and giggled a bit. Then time started again.

"I'm very sorry, but I can't help you, Cindy." he said.
"Well, why not?" she asked, upset.
"I designed the ray, yes. I can help you, no."
"Why not?"
"Because, if Eustace Strych found out then I'd be out of a job. And that’s what pays for my house, my food, and everything else I have."
"This is a life and death situation, Louis." Cindy sounded as if she was going to cry. "He's going to die if you don't help me now, Louis. Please. I promised him I wouldn't let him die."
The man, whose name was Louis, sighed.
"...Ok, fine. I'll help you. You are a very persuasive little girl you know that?" Louis asked.
She smiled. "Na, you're just a push over."
Louis just rolled his eyes as she led him away from the warmth of his home into the cold. But even though cold winds blew, he still felt a warmth inside. And I thought I heard the wind whisper, "Thank you."

“Okay Cindy, last night I couldn’t get to sleep, because I felt so bad for you and the boy in the parallel dimension, that I used the time to formulate a plan for getting the plans to the Revenge Ray. Since I am a trusted scientist there, I might be able to get them unnoticed, but why do it the easy, but risky way when you have a safer way…”
Louis rolled out a large piece of white paper covered with doodles and scribbles that looked way too crazy too work.
“Can you explain what we’re gonna do? I don’t mean to insult you, but this looks like a bunch of 1st graders did it.” Libby said.
“Well, I was tired and it was late,” Louis defended.
“Well, anyway, the plan will work like this, I will offer to lock up afterwards at the laboratory today and that way I get the main key. Then after everyone has gone home I go into the security room and turn off the surveillance cameras so that I can sneak you in without Strych knowing.”
“Good thinking,” said Cindy, “We don’t wanna get caught in Strych’s lab, then we’d be MORE THAN toast!”
“Exactly!” Louis raved. “I don’t want to take any unnecessary risks. We’ll get in and out as cleanly and painlessly as possible.”
“Heh heh, not if I can help it you won’t.”

After hours of pain, sweat and tears perfecting Louis' nowhere-near-perfect plan, the determined three-some was ready to put their almost-brilliant plan to action.
Louis went to the Strych Lab to make this day seem no more special than any other.
Unfortunately, not many things get past Eustace Strych unnoticed.
"Hello, Mr. Louis." Eustace sidestepped directly into Louis' path as he walked through the heavy metal door entering Strych Labs.
"G'mornin', sir." Louis said, casually. Trying his best to keep cool, though his pulse raced and his knew it showed on his face.
"Normal day at work, Mr. Louis?" Eustace's unibrow rose at Louis unnerving him. Louis gave a small shiver.
“Ah, yes. Perfectly normal.” Louis said a bit to quickly to be normal.
“Yes, yes. Perfectly, brilliantly, normal.”
What happened next, Louis was nowhere near ready for.
Eustace snapped his fingers, and two muscular looking men walked out from the blind spot on the wall past the second set of doors. Louis’ eyes grew wide as they grabbed his arms and Eustace said, “Take him away.”
