do you ever get the end reveal of a book and you're like, "What? how does that make sense?"
It's very frustrating, especially when I've been invested in a book.

Read one of my favorite T. Kingfisher books so far this morning. A Sorceress Comes to Call. It was utterly delightful. Predictable, but delightful all the same.
I have noticed that books I listen to on audio almost always make a stronger impression than when I read them. Although, I did enjoy To Ride a Rising Storm quite a bit and that was a physical read, as was The Eyes Are the Best Part.
But! It's just an interesting thing I noticed: quite a few of the books I chose to listen to on audio end up being included in my "favorites" list at the end of the year.

“A child cannot, thank Heaven, know how vast and how merciless is the nature of power, with what unbelievable cruelty people treat each other.” -The Fire Next Time, James Baldwin
I have this on my shelf. Loved Go Tell it on the Mountain and Giovanni's Room. Worth a read?

read two interesting non-fiction books this month!
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was about Henrietta Lacks, from whom HeLa is taken (HeLa is an immortalized cell line used in scientific research.) HeLa cells, like other cell lines, are termed "immortal" because they can divide an unlimited number of times in a laboratory cell culture plate, as long as fundamental cell survival conditions are met. HeLa cells have "continually been used for research into cancer, AIDS, the effects of radiation and toxic substances, gene mapping, and countless other scientific pursuits.*
Unfortunately, these cells were taken from Lacks, who was African- American, without her knowledge (which was operating procedure at the time). The book tells about her life, her family, the wild life that her cells have had beyond her despite the fact that she herself is dead, the ethics of taking cells and what not to use for science. It was a very fascinating book.
*Information taken from Wikipedia.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks was fascinating and horrible all at once, very much recommended.
And then this morning, I finished The Blood Countess: Murder, Betrayal, and the Making of a Monster, which was about Countess Elizabeth Báthory, (the woman who is accused of murdering hundreds of girls, said to bathe in their blood to keep herself young). The book was pretty biased in favor of the Countess, but it still did raise some very interesting questions about what actually happened. A very interesting look at the politics and religious tensions of Hungary and Transylvania at the time.
