I've read two very similar horror novels this year, both were supernatural horror that involved a blood soaked hunger in some shape or form.
Hungerstone was VERY good. I loved the sapphic longing and chemistry between the main women. It was a bit disappointing because you really didn't LEARN much about Carmilla other than that she was hot and spooky and convinced our protagonist to give into her hunger. It was VERY good, and I like it more as I look back on it. In the original Carmilla, we understand her goals and motivations In Hungerstone and what she IS. That doesn't really happen in Hungerstone. In fact, there were times felt like she was just a prop piece to get the main character to act out. Don't get me wrong, I love books where quiet women are convinced to take action. Quiet women are overlooked far too much and underestimated. I still found myself wanting MORE. Plus, one reveal was like YEAH DUH.
This last book, Blood on Her Tongue, left me in a similar place. It was also VERY good. I loved the spooky vibes and the mystery- even if the reveal felt a little silly. But the shift specifically from the main character to being like "this isn't my sister" to "this is my sister" happened VERY quickly and I would've liked a bit more build up to it because some of the violence that follows is CRUCIALLY hinged on her believing that.
I think that what I'm trying to say is BOTH were very good and I enjoyed myself, not life changing reads by any means, but a good time overall.
