it's really interesting because there was a book I read in like.. May? That I liked, but it didn't really stick out to me at the time, but as I think back on it MORE, I'm finding myself thinking about it every once in a while and wondering if I should read it again.

I also had my yearly re-read of Pride and Prejudice this past week. Ugh this book always does WONDERS for my soul. And you can take "I was in the middle before I knew I had begun." OUT OF MY COLD DEAD HANDS.

Should I give P&P a try? I'm not a huge Austen person but I feel like it's low-key required reading.

You can!! It is a slow burn. There is a lot of wit and fun, but it is less.. idk direct?

It is a love story but it is also sly social commentary, so like not a straight up romance. And it is very focused on the bennets and their lives. Just letting you know what to expect. :)

you can get it for free on Libby though! And before you commit you can always preview a chapter or two!

Read a book clearly inspired by the blood countess today. Filled with debauchery, commentary on the powerful preying on the poor, violence, toxic romance. Opulence and vices concealing a foundation of rot and death.

It was very tasty.

House of Hunger by Alexis Henderson.

So, I was reading 'Immortal Dark' and enjoying it, but I was reading 'Dranaics' as 'DRAINAICS'That is totally not the book's fault, but I literally giggled every time. I might have to go back now that I see i was reading it wrong the entire time.

I must be feeling ambitious because I started The Priory of the Orange Tree yesterday. If I can conquer Brandon Sanderson and George R.R. Martin, I can conquer this!

The confusion continues. I read "DRAINAICS" as "DRAINIACS". Like it rhymed with these guys:

Lol that is so amusing because ya know: they are vampires and vampires are supposed to be intimidating or whatever and now I am imagining them all running around to funny cartoon music.

So proud of myself, put down a book I was struggling with. The concept was interesting, but the characters just didn't seem to grip me.. and then there were weird things like..

"A prostrate as dry as the Sahara desert." Like, it was effective, but I was like.. ok....

And some other things just made me be like.. ehhhhhh.

So yeah. I haven't decided whether I will come back to this one. We'll see, I guess.

the context was:

"More than once, he'd wandered into a brothel and left only when they threw him out with an emptied account, a sore groin, and a prostrate as dry as the Sahara desert."

So, it's sexual frustration essentially, but you could have just conveyed that with the sore groin? Again, it painted a very vivid picture, but it was a weird way to do it.

Also, Em, I do not catch your drift. *shrugs* sorry! If you are too embarrassed to say it, that's okay, but it makes me curious why you said it in the first place.

Oh, well, the spelling is almost like part of a guy; just take away the second R in the word and you'll see what I mean... :P Oh, jeez, there I go, my mind in the gutter again... :lol: ^^;

My brain just auto corrected it every time I read it. I didn't even register that it was a typo.

well, that does make me feel a *little* better, but goodness gracious. Just. Wow.

So, there's this challenge I've been eyeing for next year, but I'm not sure if I want to do it. It's called the "anti-brain rot" challenge. Basically, it challenges you to interact more with what you read.

Basically, you have to "annotate" what you read. It places emphasis on the fact that annotating can be just highlighting a passage in an e-book, or writing your thoughts down about it. The session lasts 15 minutes (for the beginner option anyway), which is doable, I just feel like I never really have "thoughts" to share about a book. It also encourages you to read one essay every month, and create a critical media journal in which you write down reviews on each book you read, movie you watch, and essay you read.

My worry is that I will feel pressured to make my annotations or reviews in a certain way. Even if the only person who sees them is me. I fear I will constantly feel like I'm not doing "enough" to engage.

It could be good for me, but it could also be stressful too. l guess I fear it will take the enjoyment out of reading and make it feel more like an assignment than something I'm doing because I LIKE doing it.

OOO! I just had an idea! I will start doing this for the following few books I read and see how it goes. (I am reading something right now, but I'm halfway, and it makes more sense in my head to start fresh with the next book I start.)
