I finished a book this afternoon.
You Weren't Meant to be Human was horrible, disgusting, terrifying, heartbreaking, and a little bit strange. It is by far one of the most visceral books I've read this year. It was also DEFINETLY horror. In every sense of the word.
Like, if you decide to read this book PLEASE CHECK THE TRIGGER WARNINGS.
It is an unflinching look at being broken, at feeling WRONG, at identity.... at a lot of things. I don't know if I'd mark it a favorite of this year, simply because I do have a few unanswered questions, and I doubt I will ever read it again, but it was SOMETHING. There were also parts that did drag a little bit, but it always recovered quickly.
Andrew Joseph White really does write things.. in a way that feels so ... present? I don't feel like that's the right word, but whenever I read one of his books, I always feel like I'm right in the thick of it.

I just finished The House of My Mother by Shari Franke.
This book really sits heavy in the gut. There were some really HEAVY topics explored, and some very hefty content warnings apply. It was so heartbreaking seeing her recollect her younger years, and how that all eventually folded into the terrible things that happened just a few years ago.
I'm so sorry for Shari and her siblings and I hope they continue to heal from the trauma they have all suffered.

Finished Carmilla this morning. I have been meaning to get around to this novella for a long time. It was a pretty interesting read! Carmilla latched on.. (LOL) very quickly, like she went from like zero to 100 in what felt like the blink of an eye. There was a character or two that smacked of racism too.
The mystery unraveled in an interesting way though, and the writing was lovely.
Overall, it was a good read, and I'm glad I picked it up.
I need to go rewatch the web series loosely based on Carmilla. I think I watched.. like MOST of the first season? And I liked it! I think there was more, though, that I just never got around to.

Finished The Bewitching today. By far the best Silvia Moreno-Garcia I've read since Mexican Gothic.
I also really enjoyed The Possession of Alba Díaz, by Isabel Cañas which I finished earlier this week. I also read The Hacienda by her earlier this year, but this one was much stronger. I still think my favorite I've read by her is The Vampires of El Norte, that one just had so much ATMOSPHERE, but this was a very close second.

i actually re-read a book i read earlier this year and enjoyed it MORE the second time around. I don't usually do that but it was Ring Shout (a novella) and I was in the mood for something spooooky.

I did enjoy some of the horror I’ve read in the past. I just never really explored that any further and now I am finding that I should have!

Also, finally, I'm going to gently remind you again that this is not a rec channel. I'm not saying that you read these books. I'm just talking about the things that I've been reading and that I've liked.
I appreciate that you engage with this topic! I do enjoy hearing from you, but I promise that you don't have to remind me that you don't like horror
I am aware, and am not saying that you need to enjoy or interact with these types of books. ![]()

True crime is often more horrifying than fiction.

I agree! I was just commenting on the fact that some of the true crime I've read has been more horrible and unsettling than any horror I've ever read.
