Its been about 3 months since he was hurt, but he seems to be mostly, if not fully, recovered!

 

This whole StrexCorp takeover plot has made me love Night Vale (the town) even more.

 

They may not be a perfectly innocent town, with perfectly innocent people, like in most evil takeover stories.

 

They’re extremely flawed, dark, and dangerous.

 

They have many questionable laws, traditions, jobs, rituals, beliefs, and even people.

 

But they also truly care about each other as a community, love their town for what it is, and have some of the kindest, bravest, best people you’ll ever meet.

 

And NO ONE is going to take them down, hurt them, threaten their way of life, own them against their will, without a fight!

 

It gives you a whole new respect for the place.

 

At least in my eyes.

 

Maybe that was the idea.

Some of my favorite fanfics are the ones that try to explore the series, from beginning to the present, from Carlos's perspective (only if kept in character and in the proper tone of the series, of course). The possibilities there are nearly endless.

• I personally LOVE the idea (which I think is actually accepted by a significant percentage of the fandom nowadays...funny how that works) that Cecil has crazy awesome tattoos that move, and that can even transfer themselves onto other people or achieve separate corporeal form. Don't know why, it's just cool. I'm a little LESS sold on the idea that he has an all-seeing 3rd eye on his forehead...I prefer the idea that the eye (if it exists) hovers above his head like this.
• As a corollary to the above headcanon: remember in the episode "Cassette", when Cecil is accosted by a mysterious something as a teen? In my mind, that's when he got his tats. Or rather, when they got him. Maybe his sentient tattoos are even part of the reason he's done so well compared to most other NVCR interns.
• I frequently imagine Cecil with those anime-style shark teeth and/or a slasher smile, mostly because of this fanart . God, I just love how Cecil is half ominous-presence-standing-behind-you-in-a-darkened-room, and half valley girl
• I imagine Intern Dana as looking almost exactly like her voice actress (except maybe a little younger). Which is weird, honestly, because I imagined her looking that way BEFORE I saw a photo of Jasika Nicole...I googled her and was like, "omg, the voice matches the face!"
• I like to think that Cecil has a very dapper sense of style while at work, but whenever he's on dates/in casual gear, puts together the most OUTLANDISH outfits imaginable and thinks they're attractive. Carlos, meanwhile, has like 7 pairs of plaid shirts and the same number of pants, and just wears them in rotation. Under his labcoat, of course.
• I love the creativity of the fanarts I've seen where Khoshekh is depicted as something other than a floating, purple eyed cat, but I gotta say...my image of Khoshekh was pretty much cemented by this pic of him (complete with venomous spines along the ridge of his back! )

I also share the pretty popular collective headcanon that he has the tattoos and third eye (they're on almost every piece of fanart; its pretty hard to avoid), but just in the very general sense that they exist. Almost every fan interprets them a little differently, and I have my own specific ideas of them.

I don't share the idea (and I don't think I've ever heard it before ) that his tattoos can be transferred to other people. I like them to be uniquely Cecil.

How I picture them: He has several, connecting, purple, tentacle-shaped tattoos all around his arms, neck, and torso (and possibly other places), that can move around, change color, and glow. This is usually caused by his mood and emotions (mood tattoos! awesome!), but can also be affected by other factors such as illnes, the temperature, or just the day of the week.

And I know the "powers fueled by emotions" trope is really cliché and done to death, but its Cecil, who just feels so intensely and has such beautiful ways of expressing it (usually through words), that I can't help but feel it suits him. And call me a sap, but...I can't help but adore the extremely fluffy idea of his tattoos glowing or changing to a bright color any time he and Carlos hold hands or kiss.

I don't know about the idea that his tattoos are outright sentient exactly, though I've seen that one in fanfics a lot more often. The idea of them having a mind of their own and becoming shy/happy/aggressive, when they're around certain people is kind of cute, but also freaks me out a bit (which is saying a lot for this show, lol). I once again like to think that they're a representation of how Cecil's feeling himself, not they're own living pet(s) of sorts on his body.

I'm also not sure if I've ever heard the idea that he first got the tattoos when he was 15 during the events of Cassette. That's pretty interesting, though I like to think that he's had them almost his whole life. They started small, looking more like birth marks, and eventually grew and spread, mostly through his preteens and teens, and sometime in his early adulthood they "finished" and remained the way they look now. I have also wondered how he survived and made it through is internship in one piece, but I like to think that maybe some kind of invisible "mysterious force" was protecting him because "it" knew he was prophesized to be the future Voice.

He must have purple eyes in my mind. Its a MUST. And I do like him having a third eye on his forehead which gives him psychic abilities, but those abililties are limited, and he only uses them during broadcasts or in other emergencies. An idea I made up is that he first discovered his abilities as a teen and went overboard with them, discovering things he shouldn't have and getting himself into all sorts of rebellious trouble, and since then has learned that he can't let it get out of control again and is more disciplined about the right and wrong times of snooping.

I picture those teeth and that smile more on Kevin than Cecil. I know he and Cecil are supposed to be doubles, and have some resemblance, but since Kevin is implied to look "creepier" I see the razor-sharp teeth as Kevin's thang.

 

And yes, I love the various personalities of Cecil and how well he can switch them on and off.

I don't imagine Dana looking like her voice actress (I don't really picture any of the characters looking like their voice actors), but I do like the idea of her being African American, or at least dark skinned. Much fanart portrays her that way and its lovely. I believe she's supposed to be 22 in canon, if my math is good, so seeing all of these pictures of a sweet, friendly, young girl make me happy!

I got the idea from THIS fanart. Apparently there are a few fanfics that employ it too. I just thought it was too adorable to pass up.

Oh yeah, I didn't mean sentient in the sense of how Bob the Boil from FOP is sentient I meant more along the lines of "mind of their own". I'd like to think they are a part of Cecil and respond to his moods, but are outside his conscious control - rather like how I cannot stop myself from blushing redder than a tomato in front of people I find attractive.

Oh yeah, Cecil and the color purple are inextricably linked in my mind now.  99% of the time I opt for the purple eyes interpretation too, but every once in awhile I come across a piece of multi-color eyed fanart that's juuuuust the right mix of cool and creepy (like this), and my conviction starts to waver.
When I think of the psychic 3rd eye, I interpret it as something all reporters/media personnel have access to while on the job in Night Vale. It's just a standard tool in their belt, as commonplace to them as a camera would be to us.

I can imagine both Kevin and Cecil having them, or neither. For some reason serrated teeth strike me as simultaneously cute AND sinister (don't ask me to explain, because I can't), which is why it works so well in my mind. When I think Kevin, I think wide creepy smile paired with dead, blank eyes. I picture Cecil with a creepy smile as well, but with lively, expressive eyes. (What can I say? I'm an eye person )

She's the only one I imagine as looking similar to her voice artist. And same here on the second point. I also imagine Tamika Flynn as being a POC.

Well yeah, I think that one's pretty obvious. lol

 

While not specifically stated in canon, I think her race is pretty much cemented as African American. Tamika being black is just as obvious as Carlos being Latino, in my eyes. Those are the only two where I think their race is meant to be obvious. All others are fairly up to interpretation or preference.

Its hard for me to pick favorite pieces of fanart since so many are amazing, but I've probably stared at and drooled over those two for far too long (especially the one from First Date).

 

When I was new to the show and first finished through the series, and read through a fanfic for the first time, I was so confused as to where the third eye came from. That's a thing? When was that mentioned? I just assumed that it was canon and I missed it, since its so easy to miss things in this series, and there were plenty of little details that went over my head during the first few listens. It wasn't until after much searching later I realized they weren't canon but just really friggin' popular headcanons to which almost everyone just said "Oh, cool! I like that! Let's go with that!" Works for me.

Okay, I guess its my turn!

Some of these I made up completely on my own, some are shared with the fandom, and some are a little bit of both. I'll try to specify.

- The end of One Year Later was the first time Carlos came out to anyone, including himself. This is 100% mine, I've held it since nearly the beginning, never went back on it, and probably never will unless its ever debunked in canon. Its probably my most cherished headcanon, and I kind of hope his backstory remains vague enough that we never know for sure if its true or not, even though I enjoy a lot of fanfiction that clearly goes against it (a great deal focus on Carlos facing prejudice in the past and being surprised by the lack of it in Night Vale).

- Speaking on the subject of prejudice, or a lackthreof in Night Vale, I hold to and LOVE the popular headcanon that Night Vale is in a way a "queertopia." I don't mean in the sense that every citizen is LGBT, I think we've heard of a few straight background couples, and it would be odd if there weren't any, in my mind. That's not the idea or focus of the show. I mean in the sense that homophobia (and by extension transphobia and any other kind of queerphobia) don't exist, and never have, in Night Vale. Because the show has set up the whole "a same sex relationship isn't built up as a big deal or stereotyped, or considered abnormal compared to all of the other strange things going on in the town" theme, this idea is really popular among fans, and I understand why. Its kind of the way we wish it was in the real world, where it can be acknowleged but not judged or treated any differently than other relationships. Some fans don't like it and have said that its not true representation if you don't show the struggles against prejudice that real life LGBT's have to face. But in my opinion, we'll always have media, fictional and non-fictional, that depicts these struggles, especially those that take place in the real world. This is a far more unique approach to it, in my opinion. Just a world where it doesn't matter. Just a little town that's never given a second thought to the idea of judging others for that. Its not like they have perfect lives. They have a great deal of other hardships just living in that ridiculously dangerous and controlling residency. And its not even like other forms of prejudice don't exist or are unheardof (i.e. The Apache Tracker). Homophobia just isn't one of them. I think as long as you still show them as normal, average people, in realistic, healthy, non-stereoptipical, normal relationships, its plenty fair representation (this coming from a straight, white girl, of course). And I personally love fanfiction in which Carlos is stunned by no one, not a single citizen, ever giving them a hard time compared to what he was so used to viewing before moving there. (That became a longer explanation than I intended, but I just love this topic, lol).

- Last one sexuality. Carlos is gay and demisexual, and Cecil is pansexual but with a strong preference for males.

- Cecil smokes cigarettes. I have seen this one before, but I don't know how popular it is. I love, love, love, love, love it, and have added to it a little bit. Cecil smokes cigarettes that are very similar to our own, but in Night Vale they're actually good for your health. They're just as addictive as we know them, and any kind of strong addiction is annoying and has its negative side effects, but longterm use normally presents pretty positive health results for the body, so Cecil is often mocked for being a healthnut when he goes out for a smoke during The Weather. Carlos was confused by this in the beginning and originally wanted Cecil to quit, but has since just accepted it and spends a great deal of time studying what exactly is in those things.

- Speaking of Dana earlier, headcanon that Dana becomes the next Voice of Night Vale. While it hurts me to imagine any Voice besides Cecil, I've said for a little while that if Cecil ever retired/died/went missing and someone else had to take over the radio show, I'd want it to be Dana. I think it would hurt too much to hear a stranger's voice, especially a man's, take Ceci's place, but I wouldn't mind as much if it were Dana, since she's already such a hero, so talented, sweet, one of their best and bravest interns, and is close friends with Cecil. I think she's the most logical successor. And since we recently got that glimpse into her future where she apparently has a highly-respected job and position in the town, I've gone from "I want that to be true" to thinking it will be true. (And I don't mean that I want this to happen during the show's run! I always want Cecil to be the main character and radio host. I mean far in the distant future when the series is over and its implied someone else will have to takeover someday. Not now.)

- Earl Harlan is ginger. He may have removed his freckles since childhood, but that dude has readhair (sucks for the dessert)! I need this for no other reason than for Cecil to have been best friends with an adorable little ginger kid, who to many in the outside world would seem dorky, but in Night Vale its just badass looking. I also share most of the fandom's headcanons that he has an unrequited crush/love thing going on for Cecil, but I don't know which details on that I like the best. Were they in a short relationship? Friends with benefits? Did Cecil reject him outright? How long were they friends? I like to think that Carlos is Cecil's first serious relationship (which is why he's made a few mistake's, like saying too many personal things in public, or previously putting him on an unrealistic pedestal), but maybe he and Earl had a shortlived romance. Either way, I'd like to think whatever went down between them was handled respectfully and maturely, and if/when Earl ever comes back and sees Cecil and Carlos together, he'll be happy for them, or at least happy that Cecil is happy. I also don't think he's dead or gone from the series forever. I think they'll be brought back eventually, and I'm really anxious to learn more about his past and his character in general (without destroying too much of the mystery).

- Cecil tries to choose The Weather based on how he's feeling or how the tone of the show is going, but sometimes things change so much throughout the duration of the show and by the time its "The Weather time" he doesn't always get the chance to change it into something more appropriate. (I love almost all Weather headcanons, though, so even though I made this up I'm open to many other interpretations; they almost all make me happy!)

- Carlos is a morning person, because he likes to get up and to the lab as early as possible, Cecil is more of a night owl, because his radio show is usually on at night. This causes some difficulty for the two of them to find alone time together, despite the fact that time, of course, does not exist. (I used to like the idea of neither of them being morning people, but this one makes a lot more sense, and I recently read a rather good, and sexy, fanfic about it. Instant headcanon!)

 

I know more will come to me later, but I better stop typing before I've gushed over these ideas more than Cecil does over Carlos.

Interesting. I always imagined Carlos as falling somewhere along the asexual/demisexual spectrum. I kinda pictured him as one of those nerdy science people who was never particularly interested in romance or sex...until he suddenly found himself developing feelings for Cecil. I like to think it snuck up on him

You know, this is actually something feminists talk about a LOT when discussing sexism in the media. Personally, I think it's so, SO important to have books/movies/games/whatever that just normalize being a woman or normalize being gay or normalize being a POC. Like, have those things be no big deal in the world of the story. I've heard people screech their heads off about "erasing people's struggles" or whatever, but you know what? People live those struggles every day IRL. Sometimes it's nice to take a vacation from all that shit, and not be constantly reminded "oh, you're a woman in a man's world" or "oh, society is going to judge you because of your love life". I've gotten to the point in my life where I'm actually tired of reading books about female characters overcoming sex-based discrimination. I just want to see them doing all the same shit men are doing, and have no one in the story question it. And while I can't speak on behalf of all gay people, I have discussed this issue with my lesbian friend Chelsea and gay friend Chris, and they feel the same way about the portrayal of homosexual/bisexual relationships in stories. Sometimes it's nice to just imagine a place where people face a different set of inequalities, lol.

It never occurred to me that Cecil has control over the weather. I always imagined it to be something...supplied by the station, or by some higher force. Like, Cecil just flicks the "weather" switch, and whatever plays, plays. Much like how real weather cannot be chosen, but rather just is.
