I personaly hate it when "their heart skips a beat".

Like, is that possible for your heart to do that?

I thought that only happens when you have a Heart attack...

I only hate songfics if they have more song than story.

In the JN fandom, they usually do. Like, a disturbingly large amount of the time.

It's basically like they copy+pasted the lyrics of a song into the ff.net submission box, and added some lines of dialogue in between.

I rarely go on ff.net anymore, and I don't read any JN fic outside of IDOJ, so I wouldn't know how bad they can get there.

But I do agree that it can be a lazy and annoying style to fall back on.

Although I recently read what was prompted as a "songfic", but instead of the writer just putting lyrics inbetween the story, he/she actually had the characters saying the lyrics in context with what was going on, how they felt, and what else they were saying. It all felt pretty natural and served a purpose.

Now THAT was clever!

This might sound horribly too simplistic, but do you think the reason that a lot of JN fanfiction sucks is because a majority of its active fans are so much younger than us? We're here because we love the nostalgia, clever humor, creativity, and heart the show brings, but I can't help but think we might be a in a minority. I think most active JN fans today are around the age group the show was intended for on Nickelodeon, which is about 10-14 years old, I think. And preteens usually write pretty lazy, overly-cliched, and flat-out shitty fanfiction.

Don't get me wrong, I've seen horrible fanfiction for mainstream shows intended for adults, too. You'll find shitty fanfiction anywhere you go, but there seems to be, according to Mara, a very limited supply of good JN fic, and that's just my two cents on why that might be.

The people writing stuff on ff.net are in general younger than us, but if the authors' profiles are to be believed, most of the active ones seem to be in high school, not middle school. There are definitely some college kids, and some younger kids, but sophomores and juniors in high school seem to be the mainstream (as far as I can tell).

My problem with the JN fics on ff.net isn't always the horrible writing (though there's plenty of that, too), it's the lack of variety. It's the same thing over and over and over again: fluffy J/C drabble. Now, don't get me wrong. I love J/C. But only if it's done right. I only enjoy it when their relationship is portrayed as a rivalry with romantic overtones, not when it's portrayed as love-soaked goo-goo nom-nom kissy face. Make it sexy, not gag-me sucrose sweet. I need tension. Oh, and a plot of some sort.

Yes, that'd be nice. Something vaguely in-canon. That's all I ask.

No, I get it. I completely agree! I may have my favorite themes/characters/pairings/styles/genres, but mix it up at least a little! At least some variety would be nice, which is extremely rare in the JN scene, I hear ya.

Also, this probably will never occur in JN fanfiction, so maybe this is the wrong topic to bitch in, but I just want to say: I don't like middle-aged or older adults paired up with teenagers. Its just kinda skeevy to me. I don't mind slash, I don't mind age differences, I don't mind unlikely or strange-sounding couples, but...that's just eewy!

Sorry, just wanted to throw that out there.

And I have really tried to be okay with this, or at least be understanding of this. I do sort of know why someone might put these two together, or where the author is coming from. But you just can't take it that far. If it was done subtle or purely in the character's thoughts and not actions, that might work. Or if it was one-sided, and just the young teenage character having a crush on the older one, that might be cute. I get that (sort of).

But once you make it into a mutual, two-sided romantic relationship, or even worse, a sexual relationship, that's not cute. That's pedophilia. And that's f*cked up. The end.

I know most of these are tongue-in-cheek with the fact that its a little ridiculous, but...I still have a hard time reading 'em. *shudders*

I think a lot of it comes out of the anime fandoms. In Japan, it's considered more socially-OK for older men to get romantically involved with underage girls. It offends our sensibilities, surely, but hey...that's culture for you. And when silly fangirls on the internet get ahold of a potentially disturbing cultural norm and run with it...well, we all have good reason to fear.

The closest I ever got to that kind of thing is in one anime where I was rooting for the (11? 12?) year-old girl to hook up with the 16 year-old guy. But not really HOOK UP. Nothing sexual, or even physical. Just innocent romance. I did not approve of anything further than that until the girl was into her late teens or something, when the age gap was less creepy.

Yeah, that's absolutely nothing compared to the pairing I've seen that I'm referring to, Katie. In this case one character is implied to be in their 50's (maybe 60's?), and the other is 16 or 17. I don't like it.

Mara, you have a really good point. I've never read anime fic, but its very possible that a lot of these are somewhat influenced by anime fandoms and culture, and that's why it seems more okay to others.

Preteens and young teens don't always write shitty fanfiction. I remember reading some pretty fantastic stuff from 12 and 13 year olds back in my nick.com days.

Yeah, I said they usually tend to write crappy, but definitely not everyone. I know there's almost always exceptions, and you certainly shouldn't stop just because of your age. Knock yourself out!

Coming from a sophomore intermediate writer going on my junior year...

I'd say after writing about young adult fiction and reading child fiction... I dislike when they

overlap the time and create an age contrast to the show. I mean I'm OK with the twenties just NOT in their late twenties.

I'd also like it if they might use the dedication in their fic and at least update it--I mean really after three years still no update?

Yes I understand there are personal issues and many reasonable explanations... pero, por favor! At the very least delete

the thread if it had not been updated in over a few four years... BUT, that's just my little disatisfaction with fics.

Other than that, no there is nothing else.

Yes, similar to what Erik said, though its more of a personal frustration and pet peeve of mine than something I view as "bad writing."

Its just that when I read fanfiction about a show whose main characters are kids, I want to read about those kids. That's just how I am with fanfiction. I guess you could call me picky, since I know writing about "future selves" is very popular, but when I read a fanfic I like to think it could be another episode or movie, not a spin-off or reunion 10 or more years later. I guess I don't mind a few years later, but if the main characters in the show are about 9 - 12 (like in JN, for example) I don't want to read about them in their teens or adulthood. Maybe that's just me denying reality, because I know they will grow up someday, but it becomes less interesting. I can't picture it in my head. If they're the same age they were on the show I can see them in my mind just as if I was watching it, but if they're teens or adults now, I have to think of how they'll probably look and sound once they've hit puberty, and that's less fun, because using your imagination suuuuuuuuuucks.

Oddly enough, I don't mind too much when its reversed, when adult characters in canon are portrayed as little kids in fanfiction. That can be really cute most of the times (preschool au's, yippee!)

Ya know, maybe this annoyance of mine has no logic, maybe I just love kid characters too much. lol

Really? I love seeing kid characters scaled up into adults, as long as the fic doesn't suck horribly. Of course, this is coming from the girl who runs the "Aged-UP" club on deviantart, so...
