I also don't like the stories that takes a lot of years past but still didn't updated a new chapter. Like the one I was really obsessed last year. She took 4 years until a new chapter updated. But, I also understand that sometimes that they might be have a family problem or something, but come on, They were free to say that 'Sorry, this story is on hatius' something like that just don't make us wait for a long time.  <_<

Honestly, the only thing I really dislike in fanfiction is tons of graphic descriptions of violence. I can handle one or two, but if a story is filled with them, it's a bit of a turn off.

Thank goodness for tags and ratings. I feel like most people are good about marking their stuff pretty clearly.

Yeah, they usually are, and my opinions on fanfiction haven't really changed much, if at all. For one thing, I still can't stand main character death... Not vore/gore, incest, putting a character insanely OOC, explicit promiscuous situations, or torture/rape, for that matter... :onfire: Other than those, anything else is fair game!

the things I don't like about JN  fanfiction is when they're  all older and stuff like that. like in high school or college. but maybe that's just because i'm young and not used to that kind of stuff yet, lol. I also don't like slash  fan fiction. (i'm not homophobic, i just can't really see Jimmy/Nick or Libby/Cindy, you know?) also when they're ooc. it bugs me a lot.  I also dislike gender swaps, but i'm not sure why. I don't think that one is JUST limited to JN, though...   I also don't like AU ships. ( again, not just limited to JN fics lol.)  and as  much as i am a J/C shipper, seeing too much of it isn't all that. same with S/L.  mix it up a bit, you know?  add more to the story.

I think the last think i don't like about fanfiction (AGAINN, not just limited to JN) is self shipping.  you know, when it's like, "y/n and {insert whatever character here}" it make me, personally, quite uncomfortable.

i guess that's it XD

I've said it before and I'll say it again! OOC! OOC!!!! i can't stand it! like, if you're going to make a Fic, AT LEAST do it right. there's no reason to Villianize ( is that a word XD?) a non villian-y  character just to fit the plot of your fic.  And it's soo boring and unoriginal.  :protest:

But it is important to remember that fic is based on something, and does not claim to be canon. :) also, there are instances when you don't see much of the character and the author has a lot of blank space to fill in. For instance, Sasha has like three lines in the show, so we know almost nothing about her except for what Cindy tells us and inference. Nick is another example of this. Even the main characters aren't fully fleshed out. Sure, it can be annoying when people write them OOC, but I can understand why it happens.

These are scenarios people write for fun and are often stepping stones in growing as a writer. Not saying you can't dislike those things you mentioned, but it is a medium that has quite a bit of room for interpretation, that's why people are drawn to it, myself included.

that is 100 percent true! I'm not the biggest fan of ooc  even when it comes to blank spaces in the writers' ,but if it's something they need to do, then so be it.  It just irritates me sometimes when a character who is nice (or maybe not SO nice sometimes) in a series is portrayed as a villain for no discernible reason.  no sort of reason to it. But again, you are right, a  fic isn't canon. maybe I should calm down a bit, LOL.

Back in my nick.com/pre-IDOJ days, I remember reading a fic there that ended on a really depressing note... I even remember what the user called himself back then, xredguy2... It was centered on Jimmy, beaten and bloody, crawling slowly up a hill, then he looks over to see a mother bear and her cub reunited. He then continued his weary trek upwards, and it ended right there. No word on if Jimmy made it to civilization so he could heal, or if the opposite happened... I was totally left hanging, and I even remember asking him if anything else would happen, and he said no, that was the end of it... I remember being really saddened by that, cuz Jimmy was my fave character then, just like he is now, and I didn't want anything bad happening to him, but that user sure proved me wrong... I was in a kinda public location at the time, so I didn't burst into tears, but if I'd been at home and by myself, I most certainly would've... : This just proves my point; I absolutely cannot STAND when someone ends a fic on a depressing note like that and refuses to continue it... That's one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to fanfiction, hands down...! :protest: No, no, no, NO, NO!!!

Oh, that is sad.

Yeah, unfinished stories are a bummer, but life happens sometimes. An author can discontinue a story without meaning to be mean or vindictive. :) And so, it's a bit unfair to hold that against them.

Technically speaking, authors of fanfic don't owe the reader anything since they do it for free. They don't need to give an explanation or reason when they walk away from a story. It's nice when they can, but they don't need to. It can be hard to remember, but it's important. :)

That's very true, but I remember him saying that that was the ending of that fic. It wasn't just temporarily discontinued... -_- When they choose to give it a bittersweet ending like that and not resolve any issues the characters may have at the end, that's what really saddens me or irritates me, depending on how a fic ends... :( :grr: I'm just turned off by those kinda things, just being left hanging on purpose like that in a fanfic... -_-

Sheesh, yeah, it is! I don't wanna be left hanging on purpose...! I realize there aren't many authors out there who'd do that intentionally, but I still can't stand it... I mean, I want a fanfic to end on a positive note, not a negative one... <_< And there's no way I'm reading one that's depressing throughout the whole thing; seriously, SO not cool, people, whoever you may be... :protest:

I think everything else has already been covered, unless y'all can think of something that hasn't been discussed here yet... ^^; In case of the latter, have at it! ;)

Gosh, It is entirely frustrating when good stories are abandoned. There is a friendship story between Sheen and Cindy that was so good and just left off at a huge cliffhanger. But you are right, Katie. Things happen and we don't know the circumstances why they didn't finish it.

Gawd, this aged like milk as I don't think this way about same sex couples anymore, Urgh   I actually cringed when I read this response coming from me haha. Anyways, what I hate about Fanfics nowadays is when characters are written very OOC   Now, that's the thing that wont age milk for sure haha. I just don't like it when characters in fanfics are acting in way I don't see their canon personality and behavior would do, it totally ruins the story for me

I only had one reason to dislike a JN fic, when the story had a same sex love team (Sorry, if this offends anyone who liked this) It's just so annoying to read for me personally

But, it's still a fanfcition. Everyone has a right to write a story based on their own plot. I still have no right to judge them LOL

Been a victim of this too for so many times and you're right, those authors don't need to give an explanation for their absence. I just try to avoid reading unfinished stories that hasn't been updated for at least 2 years to prevent disappointments haha

Yes, agree 100%. I know people have the right to make the characters how they want but kinda defeats the purpose of fan fiction for me personally.

I haven't read much fanfiction. The only story I've read was TOSOT and Mara wrote that really well, but from what I remember from some of the ones I read on Nick.com way back, the main thing that bothered me was spelling and grammar mistakes. That's my biggest pet peeve. Whenever I write, I always go back and reread what I write so that I can fix spelling mistakes.

Yes, totally. It's pretty distracting if there are a lot of spelling/grammar errors, and I give up reading it pretty quick.

You never have to read something you don’t like. But it is important to remember that fanfic is an important way for someone to grow in their writing. That’s not always true, but many times it is. There is a person creating that content and they might not be perfect but they could get better! After all, who hasn’t written something with errors? I’ve been writing for a long time and I still make completely ridiculous mistakes. Lol :)
