Betty/Jimmy?

Don't like it, don't hate it, don't care for it. The show hasn't given away anything about Betty's character that made me interested in her nor gave me any particular reasons to believe that she and Jimmy are a 'match made in heaven'. She's just...there. She's nice, I'd say she's quite smart too, that's it. Of course Jimmy would like her, who wouldn't if they were in his place? But I don't see anything special about his crush that'd spark anything beyond that.
And in theory I think Betty's better off without him. It's hard to stand out next to someone who's as resourceful (and proud) as Jimmy. She doesn't seem the type who'd care much for doing so nonetheless. If she was to get involved with Jimmy and they'd stay the way they interacted in the show, she'd be nothing but the supporting partner in the background, smiling up at the great genius. Once he's won her over, I mean. Which would make me sad, cause I don't think such a role is all too healthy for a young woman.
She can shine on her own.

Also, please refer to my J/C criticism essay about my thoughts on demonizing Betty.

If JN was renewed, we could see more of Betty. But know, that damn sponge killed our chances.
I know I left this out of my essay, but the Jimmy/Cindy paring is a cliche, the "mean-girl-falls-with-smart-guy" thing is kinda weird.

What I look for in pairings is chemistry. Betty is too...plain in the show. You need two fun personalities to have chemistry. Betty doesn't have any personality going for her. The writer's didn't give her much of one, because her role was to be a point of jealousy for Cindy. *shrug* Sounds harsh, but it's true. This isn't the "fangirl" in me speaking. I'm looking at this as a writer.
I'm fine with people taking the character Betty and moving her forward in fanfics or in their imagination. And even if they pair her up with Jimmy, as long as they do it well, I'm totally cool with it.
But in the JN cartoon series itself, no. Jimmy/Betty was not the intention of the writers. She's a plot point more than a character.
(Obviously, I'm not saying people shouldn't ship it.)

This would happen to Cindy if the pressures of her mother twist her mind and cause her to snap:
A likely possibility for her to go mad, only without becoming Catwoman.
Even if they grow up as teens and get married, it would not be a happy marriage, as seen in The Tomorrow Boys. I remembered reading a JN Fanfic about Cindy abusing Jimmy and beating him on DA. I would find it, but it's hard to find on DA.
I believe the writers wanted Jimmy to be with Cindy because they have a thing for the "mean-bully-girl-falls-for-smart-boy" cliche.

Honestly, this argument is pretty futile. They're 11. I only know of one person personally who married their childhood sweetheart. Everyone else either met them in high school or some time afterwards. Who knows, maybe Jimmy would move away and meet the girl of his dreams somewhere else.
The likelihood of Jimmy ending up with either Cindy or Betty, or even Sheen, Carl, Libby, or even Ms. Fowl is most likely slim to none.

I just don't get the "mean-bully-girl-falls-for-smart-boy" cliche. It may have worked on Hey Arnold, but JN takes this cliche higher.

On that note, I don't know you very well Mister Urvy, but you seem to spend an awful lot of time disliking one 'rivaling' ship and being disgruntled about it, when shipping is supposed to be a fun thing to do. I understand that you're disappointed that the writers' decision didn't suit your taste, but why not focus on how wonderful Jimmy/Betty is to ship? (Yeah, I read the essay.)
If I listed in my head all possibilities of my favorite -fictional- characters ending up in an abusive relationship, the cruel way some complete strangers treat a favorite heroine of mine in fanfiction - or contemplating the slim chances of my ship to succeed in reality for that matter- I'd be a very unhappy camper and make nobody feel sad but myself. And that I don't think shipping is about at all.
I'm terribly sorry if I come off rude, but I've been eating nothing but salad for the past three months and thus a horrible, meatless bitterness is circulating through my veins.
And now I demand to be pelted for off-topicness and freakingly presumptous behavior which's idiocy will make me shake my wise, wise head when I've turned older.

And so a thread about whether Jimmy and Betty could work as a couple came dangerously close to turning into yet another 'does JC make sense or not' discussion. =) It seems one ship can't be discussed without comparing it to others. It's a whole network of love out there.

1-I wasn't bashing J/C with childish insults and such.
2-The reason why I preferred J/B, is because unlike Cindy, Betty never insulted or threatened Jimmy at all.

That you know of. We don't see enough of her character to really get to know if that would be the way that she would act.
