Unforgettable Summer and More
Chapter 19: Just In Time!
(Jimmy's POV)
Right at that moment, an alarm went off on my watch. I pressed a button on it and gasped angrily, "Gas planet, that spoiled, rich, annoying snob is beginning to get on my LAST nerve!!!"
"What is it THIS time, Jimmy?" Cindy wanted to know as I started up my hovercar and proceeded to head back to Retroville.
"Honey, Strych is up to his usual mischief again, only this time, it's much more severe!!" I groaned, extremely ticked off, "He's getting on my nerves SO much he makes me want to liquefy him in a highly volatile chemical, then recrystallize him in a liquid nitrogen cooling chamber!!"
"But what I'D like to know is exactly WHAT he's doing that's so irritating, Neutron!" Libby persisted.
"He's having his personal pilots circle the globe and spray some sort of mist on everyone that makes them submit to his every whim and desire!" I explained.
"Then how come it hasn't affected us yet, Jim?" Carl asked, confused.
"That's probably because his pilots haven't reached the area we're currently in, yet, Carl," I informed him, "And we have to do whatever it takes to avoid these mists so we don't fall under his control until we can find a way to prevent our mind-control, even though we'd be exposed to them."
"Then what are those bluish-green clouds that are following us, Jimmy?!" Sheen wanted to know, pointing behind us.
I briefly glanced behind us and gasped, horrified. "Those are the mind-controlling mists, guys!!" I exclaimed.
"Then get us away from them, sweetie!" Cindy urged me.
"You GOT it, Cin!" I told her, and flew us back to my lab in a flash. I just barely got everyone inside and sealed the opening when I saw, using VOX's screen, the mists covering everything above us.
Then I instructed Goddard, who was conveniently right next to me, "Goddard, phone please!!" He tossed me one of his ears that also served as a phone. I then dialed my home's phone number in a flash. It only rang once before Mom picked up and asked, "What's going on, honey?! And, Jimmy, why are you phoning us from your lab??!"
I could tell that she put the receiving end on speaker because I heard Dad wonder in the background, "Jimbo, why is there bluish-green fog outside our windows?"
"That's none other than the work of Eustace Strych, one of my most dreadful enemies! It's a fog that, if inhaled, puts you under his power! His personal pilots deployed it from their planes about 2,000 feet up! Whatever you do, do NOT open any doors, windows, or openings that lead outside until I give the okay, got it??" I warned them.
"Okay, son, we understand," they both chimed in unison, then hung up.
"Don't you have anything that'll counteract the effects of everyone affected on the entire earth?!" Cindy anxiously asked.
"Yes, but it takes at least a day to prepare. Until then, you guys will have to stay here, a full day, I'm afraid," I informed them.
"Ya mean, as in, overnight?!!" Libby worriedly questioned.
"I'm afraid that's how it has to be, Libby," I told her sullenly, "In order to avoid the mind-controlling fog, that is."
"Well, that's fine with me!" she replied, her arm around Sheen's shoulder.
"I'll stay anywhere, as long as I'm with you, honey!" Cindy additionally told me with a contented sigh, walking up to me and leaning her head on my shoulder.
"That's very sweet of you, Cin," I informed her sweetly. Then I proceeded to return to my work on finding a solution to Strych's mind-controlling fog.
At about 10:30 that night, Mom called me through my lab, her image appearing on VOX's screen, and told me, "Jimmy, it's getting late, and you need to go to bed within the next half hour."
"Okay, Mom," I agreed, and turned to look at my friends. Libby and Sheen were cuddled together, fast asleep. I saw that Goddard had retrieved a blanket and covered them up with only their heads visible. Then I looked to the side of them and saw that their outer clothing was removed. Good, I thought to myself, At least they're not doing what Cindy and I caught them doing while in summer camp! At least they have SOME clothing on!
Then I glanced over at Carl. I saw that he'd fallen asleep, leaning against the base of my invention carousel, snoring loudly.
I then stole a glance at Cindy. I saw that she was still awake, though just barely, looking at me with her eyes half-closed and a small grin on her face. Then I thought, Yeah, Mom's probably right. I should get to bed pretty soon; it IS getting rather late. I had VOX do a background scan/investigation so I could get some sleep.
I got up out of my computer chair and laid down next to Cindy, having Goddard cover us with a blanket of his. We both fell asleep about 20 minutes later, almost at the same time.
The next morning, an alarm going off on VOX's screen woke me up in a flash. I saw that my outer clothing was laying off to the side, so I quickly dressed myself and investigated what was making that alarm go off.
Turns out, the investigation turned out to be a success. Then I noticed that, on the opposite side of the screen, a countdown was initiated, with slightly less than 24 hours left in it. Hmm... What does that mean?? I wondered, then it hit me! Cindy, Libby, Sheen, and I had less than 24 hours until the love potion's effects became permanent!!
Goddard whined and whimpered a little bit but I knew what he meant. "Yes, Goddard. It's true; the 4 of us have less than 24 hours 'till the potion becomes permanent," I admitted with a sigh.
Apparently, Goddard's whimpering woke Cindy up because I heard her stretch and ask me, "What results have your investigation yielded, sweetie? And why is that alarm going off?"
"This alarm is telling me that you, I, Sheen, and Libby have less than 24 hours until the love potion we accidentally consumed at summer camp takes a permanent effect on us!" I anxiously informed her.
"You're right, Jimmy!! The deadline is drawing dangerously close!!! We've gotta create the antidote and consume it fast!! We've GOTTA take action before it's too late!!!!" Cindy exclaimed.
Cindy's little outburst apparently woke Carl and Sheen up, because I heard them yawn and stretch. I quickly realized that Libby, like myself, was quite a heavy sleeper.
"Don't worry, UltraLord!! I've got your back!!! I- Oh, 'morning, guys," Sheen said, apparently waking up from an UltraLord dream. Figures.
I then happened to glance at my companions who'd awakened, then gently commanded, "Get yourselves dressed, for the love of Pete!! Gosh!!!"
"Who's Pete?? Someone I should know about??!" Sheen demanded, getting himself dressed.
I just sighed and informed him, "Sheen, it's just an expression..."
"Oh," he replied, then added, "I think I know how to wake Libby up!"
"Don't even try it, Sheen!!" I cautioned him.
But, he apparently wasn't listening, because he immediately began tickling Libby. After a few moments, she woke up and gently ordered, "Sheen, honey, could ya stop doin' that??"
"Okay," he agreed, and stopped so she could dress herself.
"Hey, Neutron?" she asked me, "What's that countdown sequence for?"
"Remember the love potion we accidentally ingested while at summer camp?" I reminded her.
"Yeah," Libby replied.
"Well, this is how much time is left for you, I, Sheen, and Cindy to create the antidote for it and consume it before the effects of the potion become permanent!" I informed them.
"Shouldn't you be getting right on it, honey?" Cindy sweetly asked.
"I would, sweetie, but I have another issue I have to deal with, which is the mind-controlling gas emitted by Strych's minions," I told her informatively.
"So, how goes the progress on your plan?" Sheen wanted to know.
"So far, it involves the usage of cyanide, which won't be harmful if we combine it with a high dose of pepper spray. And, no, Carl, the combination won't make you sneeze," I explained.
"Whew!" Carl breathed, wiping his brow.
"So, how are ya gonna get enough to surround the entire world?!" Libby anxiously questioned.
"Don't worry, guys! I have everything under control!" I reassured them, getting right to work on an invention that would help spread it around the entire Earth.
Twenty minutes later, I was finished. Then I announced, "Guys, may I present the Chemical Spreader 9000! It's guaranteed to multiply the quantity of the chemical inserted to the desired amount, in this case, enough to surround the Earth."
"Well, what are we waiting for, honey?? Let's GO!!" Cindy urged me, and ultimately, the rest of us.
"Goddard, hand out breathing masks to us, boy!" I instructed him.
He barked and did just that.
Then I added through my radio transmitter, leading them outside once I'd combined the cyanide and pepper spray and put it in my invention, "Don't worry about communication, guys, because we'll communicate via radio with these things!"
"Okay," Sheen agreed, and followed the rest of us outside.
Once there, I inserted the chemical into the machine and it dispersed it somehow over the entire world. Right at that moment, the bluish-green gas lifted and turned the atmosphere normal again.
Then I had everybody hand me their masks, which I stored in my hypercube.
"Whew!" Libby breathed, "Now that THAT'S over, we can finally focus on makin' that antidote!!"
But it turned out she spoke too soon, because a tractor beam suddenly landed on us and pulled us up into and evil-looking ship.
Once inside, henchmen soon surrounded us and grabbed us, carrying us to a wall with open clasps on it. While we were being strapped to the wall, I looked at the opposite end of the ship and squinted; I could just make out Strych laughing maniacally. "You fiend!!!!" I shouted, "Let us go this instant!!!!!"
He walked over to us and declared, "Never!! You have humiliated me for the LAST time, Neutron!!! Now, you and your little friends are gonna PAY!!!!" With that, he pressed a button on his control panel that caused a laser to start bearing down on the wall we were on, starting at the corner and gradually making its way towards us!
Carl looked over at it and shrieked, "I WANT MY MOMMY!!!!!!!!!"
"We're goners," Sheen muttered with a sigh of dismay.
Cindy looked over at me and urged, "Sweetie, you've GOTTA think of something, and quickly!!!!"
"Don't worry, guys! I'll figure something out!!" I reassured them, then muttered with my eyes tight shut, "Think, think, THINK...!!" A series of images flew through my mind: the fact that Strych had neglected to strap Goddard down, his ship's weak infrastructure. Then I exclaimed, my eyes flying open, "Brain BLAST!! Goddard, play dead as soon as you get near us!!"
He bounded over to us and exploded, reassembling himself in an instant. The explosion caused Strych's ship to burst, setting us free in the process. Luckily, we were only 10 feet off the ground, so none of us got hurt. I saw that Strych and his men weren't far off when we hit the ground. I had a plan for those no-good fiends!
I noticed that we'd landed in Retroville Park and that several squad cars were parked a short distance away, so I had Goddard use his foghorn to get their attention. When they ran over to us to see what was going on, I commanded, "Officers, arrest those fiends!!"
"Right away, Jimmy!" Officer Tubbs agreed, and escorted Strych and his men to their squad cars. I could hear Strych yelling as he was taken away, "You've NOT seen the last of me, Neutron!!!!!"
Sheen, being the goofy kid that he is, stuck out his tongue and taunted, "Nyah-nyah, nyah-nyah, NYAH-nyah!!!" He blew a strawberry at them for good measure.
I then had everyone follow me back to my lab so we could finally formulate that antidote and get us back to normal.
Once inside, I proceeded to use the wildiferous florididii to formulate the antidote that'd cure us. Fortunately, it was completed just before the countdown hit the one minute mark, and there was enough for me, Sheen, Libby, and Cindy. I handed them each a portion of it and saved a sufficient amount for myself, as well. All 4 of us doused it without delay.
Almost immediately, I felt my strong feelings for Cindy disappear. Just in time, too, because, right at that moment, the countdown had reached zero.
Cindy blushed and said in a small voice, "Um, thanks, Neutron, heh-heh!"
"No problem, Vortex!" I returned politely.
Then I looked at my watch's calender and gasped.
"What is it, Neutron?" Libby asked.
"Jumpin' Jupiter, the first day of school is tomorrow!" I exclaimed.
"If there's a back-to-school quiz or test tomorrow, you're goin' DOWN, Nerd-tron!!" Cindy challenged me.
"Not if I can help it, Vortex!!" I shot back, and the challenge was ON!!
