I realize this is HARDLY the place to post a book review, but I couldn't help myself. I was all anxious about going back to school, so I sat down and read the entire "Artemis Fowl: The Time Paradox" today...and now I wanna rant about it.
HOWEVER, BE WARNED: THERE ARE EPIC SPOILERS AHEAD.
You have been warned. Here I go.
The book itself was good, although I am a little bit sick of Opal Koboi at this point. I liked the extinctionists...they were an interesting concept. Artemis was his usual badass self, Mulch was awesomely repulsive, and Holly had some unusually vulnerable moments. The book had some great funny moments, and some truly heartbreaking moments as well...not to mention a fair amount of fanservice.
I must say - The shipper in me endured an awesome yet horribly painful rollercoaster ride. The Holly Artemis kiss was hilarious. I could just see Holly's thoughts... "Oops, my bad", whereas Artemis was all like aahduurrrr... . Nonetheless, the whole AH stint in this book was more depressing than gratifying. It was so sad to see Artemis's one lie tear apart their fragile budding relationship. I couldn't help but shed a tear when Artemis was thinking "If Only..."
I can't explain it...the whole book just left me with a vague sad, depressed feeling. I was especially choked up by this part:
"Artemis turned over on his back and watched the stars. On this evening they just made him feel tiny and insignificant. Nature was vast and mighty and would eventually swallow him, even the memory of him. He lay there cold and alone on the plateau, waiting for a feeling of triumph that he realized would never arrive, and listening to the distant shouts of the villagers as they made their way across the long meadow".
Oh, Eoin, you brought tears to my eyes with that passage. I think we all share this feeling at some point in our lives...the sudden realization of the tinyness of our existence, and the sheer vast loneliness of time and the universe.
Honestly, I hope there IS a 7th book. I know a lot of fans thought the ending of the Time Paradox was hopeful, but I found it to be rather the opposite. I don't know why Eoin Colfer introduced AH into the story simply to make it depressing...either he's building up to something or he just wanted to say "See! Doesn't work!" to all the Artemis/Holly shippers out there.
In other news, Myles and Beckett are freaking adorable. I didn't think they would be, but they are!
If you've read the book, tell me your take on what happened! If you haven't read it yet...what the heck are you reading this for?
