Chapter 9: The Racial Divide
At last, the JimBus landed noisily in the alley, loose newspapers and trash dancing in its wake. The back lifted up like a minivan and Jimmy jumped out.
“It’s about time!” Cindy immediately yelled at him. “What took you…?” Her words died on her lips when she saw the look of wide-eyed fear on Jimmy’s face.
“Hurry,” he said, ignoring Cindy’s comment. “We have to get them to the hospital.”
“Them?” Cindy repeated, leaning her head to one side to see inside the rocket. She gasped. “Sheen?” she thought, scrambling inside. Libby was kneeling next to unconscious Sheen, silent tears pouring down her white face.
“What happened, Libs?” Cindy asked, astounded. Wiping her eyes, Libby told her the whole story from the neighborhood. “Jimmy said he got shot in the arm.” She nodded towards the bandages on Sheen’s right arm.
“So, what happened to you?” Libby asked. “We could hear your message in the rocket.”
“I’ll tell you later,” Cindy replied. “Right now, let’s get these two to the hospital.”
With Goddard’s help, Jimmy and Sammy patched up Jamal as best as they could and laid him beside Sheen in the JimBus.
“C…Cindy,” he whispered weakly. “What’s going on?”
“Sh…” she answered. “Just rest, Jamal. You’ll be fine soon.”
Jimmy, who was watching this exchange, gave Cindy a last look of confusion, and then jumped into the driver’s seat.
“Are you coming…?” he yelled to Sammy, searching for his name.
“It’s Sammy, and no. I’m going to tell his mom what happened. I’ll come later.” Jimmy gave him a solemn thumbs-up and then lifted the JimBus of the ground.

The waiting room was eerily quiet compared to the chaos from before. As soon as Sheen and Jamal had been taken away by the hospital staff, Carl began frantically asking questions.
“What happened…what’s going on…why are you calling her Libby and her Cindy…was that red stuff b—blood…. WHY ARE YOU STARING AT ME?!”
Calmly, Jimmy, Libby, and Cindy retold their adventure, from the Metamorphosis Pod to the fight in the alley. When they were finished, Carl fell dramatically into a chair, dizzy.
“I think we told him enough,” Libby said sympathetically. “I’m going to see Sheen.” She walked through a pair of double doors. There was an awkward silence as Jimmy and Cindy looked at their hands nervously. Cindy could faintly see her dark reflection in the shiny, clean floor. She sighed heavily.
“What’s wrong, Cindy?” he asked.
“Oh, nothing,” she replied. Another silence. “It’s just that…well, what if your Metamorphosis machine messed up and I have to stay like this forever? What would you say…would you…” She paused, biting her lip. “Would you still like me?”
Jimmy’s eyes went wide. “How could you even consider that? Of course I would still…you know, like you.” He blushed, clearly uncomfortable with the current conversation.
“Then…then what’s stopping you now?”
“Well, um…” He was silent for a moment. “Well, I have lots of enemies. You’ve seen what happened with the League of Villains. Part of why I can’t, you know, like-like you is because when they found out, you would be put in danger.”
Cindy sighed, a small smile on her lips. “Haven’t all of us been put through enough danger already? Why should that even matter?”
Jimmy opened his mouth to speak, but a doctor suddenly came into the waiting room. He licked his lips nervously.
“I’m afraid I have some bad news.”
“Is…is Sheen ok?” Carl asked quietly from the chair.
“Yes,” the doctor assured him. “Mr. Estevez is pulling through quite nicely. Your friend, Jamal, however needs an emergency blood transfusion, and our hospital doesn’t carry his blood type.”
“Not carry his blood type? What kind of hospital is this?” Jimmy accused him.
“I’m sorry,” the doctor said. “But our funds wouldn’t allow us to carry A-positive blood.”
“A-positive?” Cindy said, her eyes lighting up instantly. “I’m A-positive! Let me give blood.”
“But miss, you’re not old en…”
“I don’t care! We’re gonna save his life!”

Jamal must get better. Although, if he didn't, there would be some major angst material for Cindy...
lol this makes me realize that if I was writing this, I'd probably kill off Jamal just so I could include a healthy dose of angst. I'm a bad person...
