Chapter 8: A Nice Neighborhood?
“So…what brings a beautiful lady like you to Retroville?” Sheen flirted as he, Linda and Carl sat in the back of the cab. The air stank with the scent of the Ultralord Hero Musk that he had sprayed on himself. He indiscreetly put his arm around her shoulders.
Linda sighed, rolling her eyes at the cab window with a small smile on her face.
“My dad got a new job at a…toy company,” she answered.
“Really? Jimmy’s dad used to work there too! But then his cool girly tank destroyed half the town. You probably read that in the paper. It was awesome!”
“Well, I just hope that doesn’t happen to my dad.”
Benny, the driver, stopped the cab. “Here ya are, kids,” he said. “Green Springs.”
“Thanks, Uncle Benny,” Linda said.
“I’m not your uncle,” he replied, unable to retain his slight distaste.
“Oh, right,” she quickly remembered. “Sorry, but you look an awful like my uncle Benny.”
He laughed. “I doubt that, sweetie, but I’ll take your word for it.”
When they got to the streets, unsurprisingly, no one was there, not even any kids.
“So, where do we go first?” Carl asked, his voice unnaturally loud in the empty street.
“I know just the place,” Linda answered, her eyes narrowed slightly.
She marched confidently up to Mr. and Mrs. Cole’s door, followed by Carl and Sheen, and knocked. This time, it was Mr. Cole who opened it, little Whitney close on his heels.
“Oh, hello!” he greeted, a friendly smile on his face. “How may I help you kids?”
“Hello, Mr. Cole,” Linda said, courteously. My name is Linda and I’m writing a newspaper article about your lovely neighborhood. Can my friends and I come in?”
“Of course,” he agreed, stealing a quick glance at Sheen in the process.
They crossed the threshold into the well lit foyer and followed Mr. Cole into the parlor.
“Whitney, sweetie,” he cooed to the little girl hanging on his pants leg. “Will you go get mommy for me?” The girl nodded eagerly and sprinted out of the room.
“Sweet little girl,” Mr. Cole murmured to himself. “So,” he started, addressing Linda. “you’re doing a newspaper article on Green Springs?”
“Yep!” Sheen blurted out. Mr. Cole ignored him.
“Well, when my wife joins us, we can start your interview then.”
Whitney came skipping into the parlor singing, “I found mommy, I found mommy!”
“Good job, Whitney!” Mr. Cole praised, patting the girl’s golden hair. “Now, mommy and I need to do some business-y things, so why don’t you play with Pookie in the backyard?”
“Ok, daddy!” she agreed excitedly, immediately heading for the sliding back door, followed by a little poodle dog.
“Well, hello!” Mrs. Cole greeted as she sat down on a couch with her husband. She had the same golden curls as her daughter.
“Come, sit,” she invited, pointed to the couch facing them.
“It’s nice to meet you, Mrs. Cole,” Linda said. “I’m doing an article about this neighborhood. Would you and your husband mind if I ask you some questions?”
“Ask away,” she replied with a smile.
The interview was pretty informative. Green Springs, to keep it looking beautiful, had many regulations that all residents had to abide by. There was a fee against letting your grass grow above certain height, and every household had to complete a yearly house-beatifying checklist, which included painting, siding, and roofing, as well as plumbing and A/C keep-up. There was a regulation that prohibited children to play in the streets or even in the front lawn, which explained the empty streets, and there was an 11:00 curfew for every resident. There was a few positive attributes, such as a pool for every house, and free gardening, but other than that, Linda realized how oppressive the neighborhood really was.
“Any more questions?” Mr. Cole asked.
“Just one more,” she answered, holding her breath slightly. “What’s the percentage of minorities among the neighborhood residents?”
“M…minorities?” Mr. Cole repeated, stealing the quickest of glances at Sheen.
“Yes…” Linda confirmed, raising an eyebrow suspiciously.
“We…don’t have any minorities in this neighborhood,” his wife said, her voice suddenly hard. She stood, followed by her husband. “Now, if that’s all the questions you have, my husband and I are very busy, so let me just show you the way out.”
As Linda and the boys walked back to the sidewalk, Linda accidentally let out a growl of frustration.
“What’s wrong?” Carl asked nervously. “Did I do something bad back there?”
“No,” Linda sighed. “It’s just that those people…” She gritted her teeth.
“What they’d do wrong?” Sheen asked. “That little girl even gave me a lollipop on the way out.” He got it out and popped it into his mouth, sucking on it eagerly.
“Didn’t you see the looks they gave you?” Linda argued. “Especially when I mentioned minorities…” Sheen just shrugged as he twirled the lollipop around in his mouth.
“They seemed nice to me.”
Suddenly, they heard the sound of glass shattering, followed by a loud alarm coming from the house across the street.
“What’s going on? It sounds like someone broke in!” Linda exclaimed.
“Shouldn’t we tell someone?” Carl asked, his eyes fearful.
“I say we go in after him and hold him down!” Sheen suggested, pretending to wrestle an imaginary burglar. Suddenly, a dark figure climbed out of a window and started to run away.
“Look, he’s getting away!” Linda exclaimed.
“Don’t worry! I’ll get him, my sweet!” Sheen shouted, running towards the figure.
“No, Sheen! Don’t!” Linda yelled.
“Hey, burglar dude!” Sheen shouted to the figure. “You forgot something!” He yanked the lollipop out of his mouth and threw it at him, landing it in the man’s short, curly hair.
“What the…” the figure said, stopping in his tracks and feeling around his hair for the lollipop. When he found it, he yanked it out with a growl and threw it to the ground angrily.
“Stupid kid,” he mumbled, pointing something in his hand at Sheen.
Linda screamed as she heard the gun blast, its horrific sound echoing in her head. The dark man slipped away in the blink of an eye, snickering wickedly as Sheen crumpled to the ground.
