Ok, after what seems like forever, I have finally finished the next and the last chapter of this fanfic....and it only took me a few months to get my butt in gear. :lol: So enjoy! Or else! :angry: (jk ^_^ )
Chapter 10: A Lesson in Humanity
Once again, Cindy paced down the sleek white tiles of the waiting room, nervously fingering the tight bandage on her arm. Each time she passed the double doors she stared intently at them, begging the doctor to push them forward. Jimmy and Carl sat in chairs, watching her progress around the room.
“Maybe you should sit down,” Jimmy suggested, indicating the seat next to him.
“I can’t!” Cindy exclaimed, stopping for a moment to look at him. “I can’t relax until I know he’s ok.”
* * * *
The donation, overseen by the very nervous doctor, was a success, despite Cindy’s young age. She stared at Jamal’s quiet face as he lay on the table beside hers. Taking deep breaths, she closed her eyes, feeling her blood flow into his body, healing him.
“This boy is so brave, yet so kind,” she thought. “It’s too bad it took all this for us to get to know each other. After what I’ve seen, this blood is the least he deserves.”
Meanwhile, Libby cautiously pushed open the door to Sheen’s room, where he laid peacefully in-between the pure white sheets.
“Oh, Sheen,” she murmured, coming up to the bed. “You look so calm when you’re sleeping.” She gingerly put her hand on his as tiny tears started to collect at the corners of her eyes. “Why did you do something that stupid? Why did you feel the need to risk your life to prove your love?” A soft laugh came to her lips. “You’ve pretty much established that.” She gently bit her lip as a single tear ran down her cheek. “Don’t do anything like that again, ok?”

Cindy continued pacing the floor.
“Cindy, I think you should sit down. You just gave blood, remember?”
“Yeah, I know, but I…” She was interrupted as the doctor appeared in the door, grinning from ear to ear.
“It worked!” he explained. “You can see him now. He just came to.”
She breathed a sigh of relief when she saw Jamal’s smile as she walked into his room.
“Cindy!” he called, waving her over from his bed. “The doctor told me what you did. I couldn’t thank you enough. You’re a true friend.”
“Aw, Jamal,” Cindy said, blushing. “I…”
Suddenly, Cindy began to feel a peculiar sensation on her body, as if she was shedding her skin. In another room in the hospital, Libby gasped with surprise as her skin began to grow darker and darker until it reached her natural pigment. She felt her hair; it was back in corn rolls.
“It finally wore off,” she murmured. At the sound over voice, Sheen’s eyes fluttered open.
“Oh, hey Libby,” he greeted as he focused on her. “I bet you’re wondering what happened.”
“No,” she answered with a small smile. “I already know all about it.”
“Oh, well, just so ya know, that Linda chick meant nothing to me.”
“Ok, Sheen. I believe you,” Libby replied, rolling her eyes.

Cindy stared down at the pale skin on her arm.
“Ah, right on time,” Jimmy observed, looking at his watch.
“Ok, what the heck is going on?” Jamal asked, staring at Cindy. “Aren’t you that whitey girl from this morning?”
Jimmy stood in front of Cindy. “Yes,” he said. “She is a Caucasian female, if that’s what you mean. But may I remind you that she just saved your life? Let’s drop our racial prejudices, shall we, and focus on this fact: Her blood is now flowing through your veins. You have no choice but to accept that there is no difference between you two.”
“It’s ok, Jimmy,” Cindy assured him as she stepped back in front. “It’s not his fault. That’s the way he was raised.”
Jamal rung his hands. “Cindy?” he asked. “Your name is still Cindy, right? I don’t know what just happened and I don’t think I wanna know, but I’ll tell ya this: I’ve learned my lesson. You’re still a true friend, no matter what color you are.”
He held out his hand and smiling, Cindy shook it warmly.
Epilogue
“Well, girls,” Mr. Lawrence said, laying Cindy and Libby’s papers back on his desk. “Those were the two greatest articles I have ever had the pleasure of reading. It’s like you were part of the neighborhood. How on Earth were you able to compile all these little details?”
Cindy and Libby exchanged amused glances. “It wasn’t much, Mr. Lawrence,” Cindy began.
“We were just curious,” Libby concluded. As their teacher’s face melted in confusion, they started laughing, and they were still laughing when the burst through the front door of the school, arm in arm.
(I've wanted to say this for a very long time...)
