Caught a clever reference in this evening's showing of "The N-men". The Van Patten Radiation Belt Jimmy refers to is a combination of the actual, real Van Allen Radiation Belt and actor Dick Van Patten from the old sitcom, "Eight Is Enough".

Just noticed another totally obscure reference in "The N Men". Cindy mockingly calls Jimmy "William of Orange" in this episode. I had no idea what she was talking about, but I figured it must have been a reference to something. A little Google research revealed that King William III of England, was also called William of Orange. Ok, so I don't know my British history very well. Apparently some JN writer does.

Officer Tubbs and the guy who looks like Corky who's always eating, might be a reference to Miami Vice. In Miami Vice, the main characters are named Tubbs and Crockett.

In The Junkman Cometh, when they land on the moon, it pans across the surface and you can see the black monolith from 2001: A Space Odyssey. Which, by the way people, is an AMAZING film. See it!

And the title is a reference to the play The Iceman Cometh.

Good catch on the 2001 reference, Lily. I missed that one. I agree with you on 2001: A Space Odyssey. I find that movie endlessly fascinating. Some other people I know just find it endlessly endless.

You missed that? I thought it was pretty obvious... Then again, the background is black too.

People don't like it, really? I love that film, it's so facinating! And slightly trippy... Hahaha. I love the use of sound, especially when Hal's going all crazy up in there. Very effective.

Anyway, I just watched Crouching Jimmy, Hidden Sheen and there was a reference to Shakespeare. *has handy-dandy Hamlet right beside me* Sheen says to Libby, "fickletude, thy name is Libby!" which is just like the quote from Hamlet, "Frailty, thy name is woman-" Again, I recommend this play, if you haven't read it! Hope no one's mentioned this though... Also, whenever Sheen shows off his kung-foo skillz, the siren-type noise that's played is just like Kill Bill. Don't know if that's originally from Kill Bill, but there yeah go. There's way more references to kung-foos films, but I'm sure they've been mentioned. Oh, and there's also the spoof of movie bloopers at the end. Awesome stuff.

Don’t forget the other space odyssey reference in “Men at Work!” The McSpanky’s computer looked like the HAL 9000, complete with fish-eye lens view like in the movie.

In Vanishing act, Jimmy enetrs another dimension quite similar to the opening Titles from the twighlight zone. Also, in attack of the twonkies, the twonkies act like the tribbles, from the famous star trek episode, The Trouble with Tribbles. Finally, in Sorry, wrong era, the boys slide down the back of a dinosaur, and Sheen screams Yabba Dabba Doo!. This is a reference to the flintstones.

In Return of the Nanobots (or the first Nanobot episode, I forget), Cindy recites a poem:

"And, somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout,

but there is no joy in Retroville --
because Jimmy is an IDIOT."

The writers took this from the poem "Casey at Bat."

Here's the actual last stanza:

"And, somewhere men are laughing, and little children shout,

but there is no joy in Mudville--
mighty Casey has struck out."

LOL. We read that poem in English class a couple months ago, and when I heard Cindy say that part of the poem, I was like "OMG LOL." The writers are brilliant. :P

Good to see someone keeping this thread alive. :) I have another contribution:

The big musical number that the Yolkians do in "The Eggpire Strikes Back" uses the melody from the George M. Cohan standard "Give My Regards To Broadway", which was written for the 1904 musical "Little Johnny Jones".

The episode title "Broadcast Blues" is a spoof of the movie title "Broadcast News", a very good comedy from 1987 starring William Hurt, Holly Hunter and Albert Brooks.

In "Incredible Shrinking Town" when Sheen temporarily tricks Travoltron into not looking in the lunch box in which they're hiding, that's a reference to the scene in "Star Wars" (original one, episode IV) where Obi-wan Kenobi uses the old Jedi mind trick to convince the stormtrooper that "these weren't the droids he was looking for."

I think I mentioned this in another topic.  In "Win, Lose and Kaboom", the cute little creature guarding the cave with the mushrooms is an obvious reference to the "killer rabbit" scene from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail".  Too bad Sheen didn't have the "Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch".  He would have made out much better.

Oh my gosh! You have no idea how hard I laughed just now! I LOVE the movie Monty Python and that is my favorite part!
"Oh lord, bless this thy hand grenade, that with it thou might blow thy enimies to tiny bits, in thy mercy. And the lord did grin and the people did feast apon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and oraguntans and breakfast cereals!"
Those last two are my favorites :P ! You just made my day with that! Thanks! :D

How about all those crazy references in 'Lights, Camera, Danger!'?
-The Matrix
-Lord of the Rings/Princess Bride/dinosaurs,aliens,pirates, and gladiators(?)
-no clue about the "musical number"
-Harry Potter (SS+CoS)/Wizard of Oz/Jurassic Park

The musical number you're referring to is a reference to the musical number "All That Jazz" from the movie "Chicago".

I just watched the one where the boys get jobs (I've never seen it before, so I don't know what it's called), and when Jimmy turns the resterant all high tech and stuff, the computer is JUST like Hal from 2001: A Space Odessey. It has a red eye, and it's obsessed with fixing error, no matter what the cost. But the JN isn't quite as scary.

the musical number is a spoof of the musical chicago, all that jazz....

Chicago The Musical All That Jazz Lyrics
[VELMA]
Come on babe
Why don't we paint the town?
And all that Jazz

I'm gonna rouge my knees
And roll my stockings down
And all that jazz

Start the car
I know a whoopee spot
Where the gin is cold
But the piano's hot

It's just a noisy hall
Where there's a nightly brawl
And all
That
Jazz

[VELMA]
Slick your hair
And wear your buckle shoes
And all that Jazz

I hear that Father Dip
Is gonna blow the blues
And all that Jazz

Hold on, hun
We're gonna bunny hug
I bought some aspirin
Down at United Drug
In case you shake apart
And want a brand new start
To do that-

[ROXIE]
Jazz

[COMPANY]
skit two!

[VELMA]
And all that Jazz

[COMPANY]
hotshot!
Whoopee!

[VELMA]
And all that Jazz

[COMPANY]
Ha! Ha! Ha!

[VELMA]
Find a flask
We're playing fast and loose

[ALL]
And all that jazz

[VELMA]
Right up here
Is where I store the juice

[ Lyrics found on http://www.metrolyrics.com ]

[ALL]
And all that jazz

[VELMA]
Come on, babe
We're gonna brush the sky
I bet you lucky Lindy
Never flew so high
'Cause in the stratosphere
How could he lend an ear
to all that Jazz?

[VELMA]
Oh, you're gonna see your sheba shimmy shake

[COMPANY]
And all that jazz

[VELMA]
Oh, she's gonna shimmy 'till her garters break

[COMPANY]
And all that jazz

[VELMA]
Show her where to park her girdle
Oh, her mother's blood'd curdle

[COMPANY]
And If she hears her baby squeal
It's For all that jazz

[VELMA]
And all that jazz

And all that jazz

Come on babe
Why don't we paint
The town?
And all that jazz

I'm gonna
Rouge my knees
And roll my
Stockings down
And all that jazz

Start the car
I know a whoopee spot
Where the gin is cold
But the piano's hot
It's just a noisy hall
Where there's a nightly brawl
And all that-

[COMPANY]
jazz

[VELMA]
No, I'm no one's wife
But, oh, I love my life
And all that Jazz!

[COMPANY]
That Jazz!
