Well, to be fair, “horror” is probably an overstatement. Or at least it was just like a splash of it, not an entire wave.

And that's fine! But to be clear, this topic isn't really meant to be considered recommendations or anything. It's just me, talking about books.

Of course, I would recommend most of the books I've enjoyed...because I enjoyed them, but this specific topic isn't tailored to anyone's tastes other than my own.

I feel like my tastes have changed a little bit. I feel like I am starting to enjoy books that are a little darker in tone. And that makes me wonder.. how that would reflect on books that I read in the past. A few of my stand out reads for this year have been that way. And because of Mara reading Jade City, I am curious if I would enjoy it even MORE than when I read it first.... Because I did like it quite a bit the first time around....

Now, I still PREFER lighter books and still gravitate towards those. I mean this is ME we are talking about, it's not like I've become a horror aficionado or anything, but I have also enjoyed books that are a bit bloodier and weightier.

It was A LOT.

I think I still prefer Babel, it just pinged my brain the right way.

But this trilogy was very thought provoking.

I also just finished The Broken Earth trilogy by N.K. Jemisin and I have NO idea how I feel about it. I really really liked some things, the ideas were certainly interesting and I was immersed in the world, but the prose could be a little unwieldy at times (at least for ME).

I'll have to think about it more.

Okay, folks! I got to 100 books this morning, so I'm gonna do another little current favorites thing like I did last year. It was kind of fun to see how it differed by the time December came around.

Favorite reads so far in no particular order: *I am not including my re-read of The Hunger Games

The Fifth Season by N. K. Jemisin (I did like the entire triology, but I think the first book was still my favorite in the end)

Blood Over Bright Haven, by M.L. Wang

The Tainted Cup and A Drop of Corruption, by Robert Jackson Bennett

Sorcery and Small Magics, by Maiga Doocy

Bloodmarked and Oathbound, by Tracy Deonn

Impossible Creatures, by Katherine Rundell

Emily Wilde's Compendium of Lost Tales, by Heather Fawcett

James, by Percival Everett

Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents, by Isabel Wilkerson

Amari and the Great Game, and Amari and the Despicable Wonders, by B.B. Alston

The Spirit Bares Its Teeth, by Andrew Joseph White

Sunrise On The Reaping, by Suzanne Collins

The Woman They Could Not Silence, by Kate Moore

Sister, Sinner: The Miraculous Life of Aimee Semple McPherson, by Claire Hoffman

Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng, by Kylie Lee Baker

A Letter From the Lonesome Shore, by Sylvie Cathrall (I admit I did enjoy the first one just a little more, the second dragged in places for me, but overall it was still a lovely read).

The Green Bone Saga, by Fonda Lee (I am only including this re-read because it moved up in my estimation because of it)

The Gate, the Girl, and the Dragon by Grace Lin

*Honorable mentions

The Poppy War trilogy by R. F. Kuang (this may move to my favorites by the end of the year, we will see)

The Ashfire King, by Chelsea Abdullah (again this may move to favorites by the end of the year)

The Spear Cuts Through Water, by Simon Jimenez

No Love in War: A Story of Christian Nationalism, by Valerie H. Hobbs

The Teller of Small Fortunes, by Julie Leong

So there you are! First 100 books of the year completed!!!

100 books is incredible! Congrats.

I've heard Sunrise on the Reaping is amazing but I would need to reread Hunger Games (I last read those in middle/high school). But I'm especially intrigued since Kieran Culkin from Succession has been cast in the Reaping film as Caesar Flickerman!

I'm still stuck at 19 books for the year.

- 250 pages into A People's Tragedy by Orlando Figes but that book is freaking gigantic, coming in at 800+ pages. It'll take me the rest of the summer if not the whole year to finish it, lol.

-I tried to read Slowness by Milan Kundera but found it dull and too abstract and gave up by p. 70

-The Patriot's Revolution by Mark Frankland was interesting initially but now I'm dragging out finishing the last 100 pages or so because it's gotten boring as hell reading about post Soviet Eastern Europe

Started rereading And Then There Were None Yesterday night in a bid to try and get back into the reading mode by returning to an old classic fave of mine.

You wouldn't HAVE to re-read The Hunger Games trilogy to read Sunrise on the Reaping, but you would get more out of it if you did.

800 pages? OOO BOY. That's intense.

And Then There Were None is a good read!

Aidan Turner playing Philip Lombard in the BBC adaptation is simply...everything. What a fine specimen of a man.
