First of all, Junie B. Jones was my HERO. I love reading her books, and I aspired to be just like her. I was off reading Junie B. Jones just before I started kindergarten (I was a little ahead of the game in reading already) while everyone off was doing the whole "Cat in the Hat" thing. Junie B. PWNS Dr. Seus. Seriously.
Madeline and it's sequels by Ludwig Bemelmans was great too. I love the rhyming and the rythm to the stories... it always had me coming back for more.
Irish Chain by Barbara Haworth-Attard is STILL my favourite book, and I first read it when I was about seven. It's a brilliant book... it's still sitting beside my bed for those nights I can't sleep. I'll flip to a random chapter and just read-- calms me right down. If any of you haven't read it, I suggest you do. It's an inspiring story about a dyslexic girl whose home is destroyed durring WW2, and has to find her faith again.
To Kill A Mockingbird; a CLASSIC and a must-read if you haven't already. From the moment I picked it up I was in love with Scout and her brother and their friends, and I was too young to understand some of the messages when I first read it when I was nine or ten. Re-reading it more recently I couldn't believe I'd missed all the important stuff to the story, especially the struggle for african americans in the time period, but I was too young and naive to get those themes the first time around.
Harry Potter: No explaination nessessary.
Goosebumps brings me back to when my aunt, sister and I used to make a tent in the backyard and sleep there, reading a Goosebumps book until someone fell asleep (usually me) I've read at least the first halp of every single one of them... but the ending allude me. Probably because I fell asleep.
Artemis Fowl was epic. I finally got to read the newest, and I couldn't put it down. If you haven't read the series, I highly recomend it. It's not really a "young kid's" book, but it's a great teen/young adult read, for sure.
Charlie Bone is a LOT like Harry Potter, but more modern-day and relevant to us. And it's not about whitches and wizards, but kids with other magical talents that go to a school to refine them. They're by Jenny Nimmo, and soo good. You won't be able to put them down.
I'm starting to sound like a librarian, but there's just one more, I swear, and that is, of course, Bridge to Terribithia. That book really hit home. Laughing, tears, it had it all. I was maybe twelve first time I got my hands on it; the movie didn't do it justice. I mean, the movie was good and all, but the book... *insert low whistle here* It was AMAZING.

That's the book that I'm getting for one of my friends when he and his wife decide to have kids. I dunno why, but he talks about it all the time.

There was another series like that where you could read "diaries" from children of different time periods, those were cool too.
Oh yeah, the Dear America books! I loved those! Thanks for reminding me...I hadn't thought of that series in years.

-Chicken Soup for the ... Soul
-Nancy Drew
-And many other random books
Oh, and people used to buy me animal encyclopedias all the time when I was younger, so I'd read those too.
