Any characters you're looking to have the fics center around?

Hmm. I really like all the characters, but my favorite is Iroh. I also just love the interaction of the whole gang together. I tend to choose fanfics by length, lol. I love super-long fics so I can get lost in them for a few hours and feel I'm back in that world again for a little while. One-shots are good, too, if they're about certain characters or situations I really like. But in my book, usually longer is better. And no main character death, lol. I'm reading fics to spend more time with the characters, not to grieve over them.

REVIVAL.

I'm rewatching this show once again (I do this every few months, lol). This time I'm trying to watch it and analyze why it is SO AMAZING so I can apply that knowledge to my own story telling.

Anyhow. Anyone remember "Mark Reads Harry Potter"? The guy who wrote reviews as he read each chapter of Harry Potter for the first time? He's doing it for Avatar now, and it's awesome. He just got to "The Storm". Check it out here.

Favorite episode?
"The Headband". It's so...strangely relateable, and it shows a side of the fire nation (namely, the treatment of school kids) that you probably wouldn't think about otherwise.

Least favorite episode?
"The Great Divide". Meh, just wasn't that impressive or important plot-wise. I do like that Aang lied at the end though, LOL

Favorite character, and why?
Probably Iroh. He's just so damn badass and wise. I want an uncle like him!

What element would you want to bend, or would you rather have a different skill, like Suki's Kyoshi warrior badassery?
Waterbending, definitely. Since I was a kid I've had dreams about being able to move water...I guess it's just ingrained in my psyche somehow.

Anything in the show you wanted to happen differently?
I think they should have handled the Mai/Zuko relationship a bit differently - while I love that pairing, I think the way they just launched into them making out all the time alienated a lot of viewers and contributed to all the Mai haters in the fandom. I think they should have played up the "childhood crush" thing a bit more and showed Zuko's side of the story in that regard.

What made the show "work" in your opinion?
The level of detail in the world-building, the unbelievable animation of bending/fighting sequences, and the lighthearted humor mixed in with the more intense stuff.

Pairings you like/dislike?
LIKE:
Katara X Aang (though they kind of got weird with that pairing in the 3rd season, with Katara saying she was confused and not sure if she had romantic feelings for Aang, but then magically at the end she did, without going through some kind of personal revelation or "aha!" moment...well, at least not on camera).
Toph X Sokka (I like Suki, but Toph's crush on Sokka was so....right, somehow

Yay for response! "The Headband" is fun, if purely for the "Sapphire Fire" joke. I LOL every time at that.

I suppose I'll answer next, and see if anyone else jumps in after that.


Favorite episode?

It's difficult to choose, but I think "Siege of the North, Part 2". So much happens in it, and the fighting is super badass, and Coizilla is just amaaaazing. Plus, I'm a sucker for the Spirit World. Definitely not the most humorous episode, but emotionally strong. All of Book 1 was great, but this episode really got to me and really made me fall in love with the show. I don't think Book 1 is my favorite of the three seasons, but my favorite episode was in it, if that makes any sense.

Least favorite episode?

Probably "The Chase", just because it gets me so frustrated along with everyone and I can't stand watching it. I hate arguing.


Favorite character, and why?

It's an eternal struggle between Sokka and Iroh. I like humor, lol. I love Sokka's cleverness, and Iroh's wisdom, and I never can decide which wins out.


What element would you want to bend, or would you rather have a different skill, like Suki's Kyoshi warrior badassery?

I'm not sure I'd want to be a bender. I think I'd like to be a Kyoshi warrior (hence why I included the option).


Anything in the show you wanted to happen differently?

I think I'd want the first couple episodes redone. I dunno, they don't impress me that much, and I find I have to force people through them to convince them that the show is worthwhile. I'd like the finding of Aang and the whole Avatar "reveal" to be at the level of the rest of the show. I'm not sure how exactly, but something different there...


What made the show "work" in your opinion?

The characters, by far, and how real they felt. Real issues, multifaceted personalities...no Mary Sues nor their ilk allowed! Fantastic. I also really enjoyed the balance between emotional storylines and humor.


Pairings you like/dislike?

Like - Sokka/Suki (favorite forever)

-Zuko/Mai (they amuse me so)

-Aang/Katara is something I am more "meh" about, but I am fine with it happening I suppose...ish...I STILL don't see it as realistic, but I like Aang too much to shoot it down. That poor boy would be devastated if it didn't happen. I just never saw Katara's side of it.

Dislike - Zuko/Katara (if the show had been written differently, maybe, but not the way it is now).

-Toph and...anyone. In the show, that is. I just don't see her caring about romance, especially at age 12. I think I must be oblivious, because I never saw her crush on Sokka. Even on repeated viewings, with that idea in mind, I don't see it. The only possible time when she kissed Suki on accident for saving her when she thought it was Sokka? But even that I don't interpret as having a crush on Sokka really. Maybe I just have a hard time seeing crushes, lol. And DEFINITELY don't see any romance with her and Aang.


Favorite random animal?

Turtleducks have to be one of the cutest things to have ever been thought up.


Best fight sequence?

So hard to decide. I think the whole crazy-ass fight at the end of Season 2 might win out, but I'm also partial to the Suki/Azula fight. I might edit this as I rewatch the show yet again.

Least favorite episode? "The Library" because Appa goes missing. That always made me mad....


Favorite character, and why? it's a tie between Katara and Aang.

Katara, because she has flaws, but yet she's obviously a bad *ss. Master Waterbender I think her character was annoying, but it made her feel real to me I don't know.

Aang, I don't know why, but his growth through the series was believable and felt right. Plus, controlling all the elements ... how cool is that?


What element would you want to bend, or would you rather have a different skill, like Suki's Kyoshi warrior badassery? Water or air.


Anything in the show you wanted to happen differently? Uhm, I'm sure there's something but I just can't think of it.


What made the show "work" in your opinion? All of the bending seemed so natural (unlike the movie) and all of the characters were so unique and fun to watch.

Like: Katara and Aang.

Toph and Sokka. (I just think it's cute)

Dislikes: Azula/ Sokka
Azula/ Aang.

These just don't.... make sense to me.


Favorite random animal? The funny bird at the beginning of "The Headband" that beats on Sokka's forehead. what kind of a bird is that??


Best fight sequence? Uhm I have a lot but the first ones that come to mind are..... the Agni Kai between Azula and Zuko, and the last battle between Aang and Fire Lord Ozai.

Iroh! He's the parent figure everyone should have. He always supports Zuko, he's the Dragon of the West, he drinks tea, and he has a big heart. He was also one of the few Firebenders that understood the importance of the Avatar, and what the Fire Nation was truly doing to the world.


What element would you want to bend, or would you rather have a different skill, like Suki's Kyoshi warrior badassery?

To answer both, I would like to bend Fire, and to be a master of swords.


Anything in the show you wanted to happen differently?

Nothing really.


What made the show "work" in your opinion?

The characters, the story, and the action. Mostly the characters though. There was something to like in every character, and they felt human.


Pairings you like/dislike?

Like: Aang/Katara, Sokka/Suki, and Zuko/Mai.
Dislike: None of them, at least the official pairings.


Favorite random animal?

Does have to be random, or could I say flying bison?

Favorite episode?
"Zuko Alone." I love that Zuko helps out an Earth Kingdom kid, even though the end is sad for him. It shows the growth he's had over the course of the series. He never would have done something like that in Season 1. I also love how badass he looks when he firebends for the first time with his dual swords. He rises up out of the flames in a very Ozai-like manner, yet for a completely different purpose.

Least favorite episode?

Favorite character, and why?
Zuko, of course. He's a little angsty emo prince. And he can shoot fire out of his freaking hands (ATAS reference ), plus unlike most of the other benders in the show, he can fight without his bending. I think he's one of the funniest characters also, because of his deadpan voice and overly serious attitude toward life.


What element would you want to bend, or would you rather have a different skill, like Suki's Kyoshi warrior badassery?
Either fire or water. I want to bend fire because I think firebending is beautiful. Plus wielding such a deadly force would make me feel powerful. But I'm kind of scared of being that close to fire, and water can heal so...yeah.


Anything in the show you wanted to happen differently?
ZUTARA! And I would have liked Zuko to have found his mom.


What made the show "work" in your opinion?
The combination of badass fighting and humor. There was just enough comic relief to keep the series afloat, but not so much that the show was pointless.


Pairings you like/dislike?
I'm not too fond of Kataang, but over the past two years I've slowly come to accept it. I would never read a Kataang-focused fanfic, but I wouldn't mind if Kataang was a secondary pairing to Tokka or Toko.

And I absolutely love Zutara, Toko, and Tokka.

Favorite random animal?
Turtle-duck. They're so cute!


Best fight sequence?
Zuko and Azula's agni kai in the finale. It was so intense, but the slow music and big flame flashes just made it a really beautiful thing to watch.

And later on in season 2, I don't remember if it's the end of The Guru or the beginning of The Crossroads of Destiny, but when Toph, Aang, and Sokka are riding Appa back to Ba Sing Se, Toph is clinging to Sokka's arm.

And in season 3, during Sokka's Master, Toph mentions that she misses Sokka and Katara, attempting to joke around, says "If you miss him so much, why don't you marry him?" And Toph completely turns her back on her. And when Sokka comes back and Aang and Katara rush to give him hugs and Sokka asks what's up with them, Toph turns her back to him and blushes, saying "I guess they missed you. I didn't care."

Those are all the instances I can think of off the top of my head. But I'm sure if I rewatch those seasons more closely, I'll find something else.

I always thought of that scene as her rubbing in Sokka's face (or what she supposed was Sokka) his whole LACK of gratitude when she'd saved him earlier, making a mockery of what saying thank you should be. I can see how it'd be interpreted as a crush-reveal, though. I just never thought of it that way, lol.

These ones always bother me - she's blind, lol. People are like OMG TOPH HELD SOKKA'S HAND or TOPH LINKED ARMS WITH SOKKA and it's always when they're up in the air on something, or she's hurt or something, not when she's on the ground where she can "see". I had a blind friend, and she often clung to me in situations where she was distracted or felt nervous or felt uncomfortable with her footing, etc, and I know for a fact she wasn't crushing on me, lol. So I just don't see those moves as being crush-reveals.

Again, I just saw this as typical Toph. She's just...like that. To anyone. Sokka was the specific example in this ep, but if roles had been changed around I could see her doing the same thing to Katara, for instance. She doesn't like to show she cares.

So yeah, I guess I just don't see it. I can see how you could look for this stuff and do exactly what you did - interpret it as a crush. But from how I see things, all those events were just Toph being Toph. I kind of figure if she really liked Sokka, wouldn't she be B*tch!Toph to Suki more? Cuz we all know she has the ability to be a rude jerk when she wants to be. But she seems totally cool with Suki, and with Suki and Sokka.

So yeah. I don't ship Toph and Sokka - especially because even IF Toph likes him and I just am misinterpreting things, it'd be a huuuuuuuuuuge stretch to say Sokka has romantic interest in return, lol. I never saw ANYTHING from him hinting there was something other than protective friendship like stuff towards Toph.

Obviously I don't care if other people ship them, but I can't wrap my mind around it, personally. Plus, there's the added fact that I adore Sokka/Suki to no end, lol, so I'm probably biased here.

As much as I love Tokka, I wouldn't have wanted it to actually happen in the series itself. I mean, Sokka is at least three years older than her, maybe four. As adorable as her crush on him is, a three year age difference makes a big difference when you're that young. I can really only see the ship happening when Toph is older, in her mid to late teens.

And even though Katara and Aang also have an age difference of about two years, it isn't as big a deal because Aang is older than Toph and he has more life experience than she does. Even though both Aang and Sokka are goofy and joke around a lot, they've seen enough of life to be more mature than Toph. In general they are both more capable of handling romance at the time of the series than Toph is.

I'm reading Q&As from the Avatar Wiki and there are about a million questions asking about similarities between Zuko and Kovu from The Lion King 2.

EDIT: There are also tons asking about Katara and Zuko's relationship. I consider this a success to Zutarians everywhere. I don't care if Katara and Aang get married in Mike and Bryan's canon. My canon says she marries Zuko.
