Dude, people have been doing that since the dawn of recorded history. Study ancient Egypt or Rome...their binges make us look tame by comparison.

The middle ages were a time when humanity bombed itself into a more primitive state in terms of knowledge and technological advancement. I wouldn't want to live in that time period.
