I did a search and there are topics for both Wicked and Phantom of the Opera already, but they were both small, and I was like, well I could make a separate topic for just Epic. But let's be honest, the likelihood is that I will eventually find another musical to love. So I created this one for just general freaking out about whatever musical is scratching my brain at the moment. 

 

However, before I get to the one we all know I'm obsessing about right now, I want to ask, does anyone else like musicals? or is it just me? Probably just me. So this will be yet another katie topic where I just yell about things. 

 

Some favorite musicals include:

 

Hadestown, Six, Wicked *working my way back to this one after YEARS*, My Fair Lady (look this musical drives me nuts in so many ways but the music is SO CATCHY), Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Into the Woods, Cinderella, Chicago, and there are a few more that I'm probably forgetting at the moment. 

 

But let's get to why we are here. 

 

Epic. 

 

Epic is a loose retelling of the Odyssey through the POV of Odysseus. I use the word loose because it has been a very long time since I read the original so I don't know how accurate it is, but I'm quite sure it deviates in several ways. 

 

BUT THE THEMES. 

 

The FORESHADOWING.

 

The threads of monster/ man, violence/ mercy. Friendship/ betrayal.  The way it asks, what would you do to get home? What would you do to see someone you love again?  What would you be willing to sacrifice if meant you could get the thing you wanted most?

 

Every installment works with the previous to add a little more. Each choice Odysseus makes is another step on the path that will ultimately end in blood. 

 

PLUS THE MUSIC. OH THE MUSIC IS SO INCREDIBLE. A MASTERY of voice and lyrics and just I WANT TO BITE IT.

 

I am half tempted to write a novel length explanation, but I shall refrain for now. I'm not even sure I will keep this topic, I mostly just am LOSING my mind over the latest drop and I needed to yell about it.

Hey, you're not the only one who loves musicals! Granted, I'm not as stir-crazy about them as you, but I do enjoy them. I've seen a few musical type plays, like Le Miserables, Cats, and a few others I'm probably forgetting... I do have my share of musical movies I love, too, and I can name several! Frozen/Frozen 2 are big ones, the High School Musical trilogy, The Lion King 1 and 2, and I think there are some non-Disney films I like that are musicals... I just can't think of any right now! So, nope, you're not the only one, girl!

I did know that or at least I figured! But I didn’t want to assume that you liked any others since i wasn’t sure

What are your other favorites?

I was big into Hamilton for a while. 2016-2018/19 maybe. Phantom of the Opera was basically my life in seventh grade lol. I also love Wicked. RENT was another big love of mine. I was a huge fan of The Lightning Thief (way better adaptation than the movie. Still need to see the Disney+ series and compare). I think that's all the ones I've really gotten into and listened to the soundtracks extensively, but I've enjoyed others like Fiddler on the Roof, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast, and The Lion King.

Those are excellent choices. I do like Hamilton too. Though I don't love it quite as much as I did, seeing it live was amazing and some of the tracks still SLAP. Oh, yeah, Rent is another excellent one! 

 

I think of the Disney musicals, Beauty and the Beast is probably one of my favorites. 

 

I like Fiddler too! (I was actually in a production of Fiddler and it was quite fun.) Sound of Music is pretty good too, but it's not a fave, (it's just SO LONG) but there are some WONDERFUL tracks in there.

Oh, yeah, Sound of Music!  I've seen that one, too, a school production of one.  It's pretty darn good...

I forgot to mention I love The Hunchback of Notre Dame. The off broadway version was SO good. 

 

But let's talk about why we are here. I'm sure you've all seen me posting about Epic in IDOJ Jukebox, but I just... AHHHH.

 

Jorge re-uploaded the songs last week and they ARE SO GOOD. This is the starting point of the story:

 

 

but this is the song that made me fall IN LOVE with this musical over a year ago. I've shared it like three times in IDOJ jukebox, but this is my topic (MWUAHAHHA) So if you've got a problem with that... well, I don't know how to help ya. lol
