I noticed that there's a topic for disliking things in fanfiction. There's one for favorite best one shots etc. But not one for more general positive things.  

 

This is for positive things only! So, please don't say negative things if someone mentions they like something that turns you off. Unless it's a trigger warning of some kind, all of which should be properly labeled. 

 

For instance, I love when authors flesh out relationships between characters in the fandom they are working with. I love romance and comedy. I also like action and occasional angst as well. Although, when I'm wanting to read something short and quick, the more romantic pieces are what I gravitate towards. 

 

What about you? What are some things you love about fanfiction? The ability to lose yourself in a world you love? Seeing some of your favorite characters tackle new things? Seeing the Neutron group (in the case of JN) grow closer? What are your favorite genres?

Well written with good grammar is one of my biggest things.
I also love fleshing out relationships, especially when it's done well, it makes me happy. I like ship fics but I love friendship a lot and it's hard to find a well written friendship fic, but when I do it's amazing. 💕

Yes! Friendship fics are fantastic too!

I’m actually not even as big on grammar or spelling errors. (Unless I can’t read it at all) I notice them a lot in published works, but not so much in fanfic. Of course being well written is a plus! But what I love the most is seeing characters interpreted by others!

I realized I'm a sucker for College!AU in a lot of fandoms, lol. I also of course love when Harry Potter is brought into a fanfic, either by doing a Hogwarts!AU or a Modern!AU that mentions HP just as a normal cultural phenomenon. Like, one of my favorite fanfics of all time is a Voltron: Legendary Defender College/Present-Day/Sports-Team AU where all the important characters play in a college Quidditch league together. It's also a Shiro/Pidge romance fic, which is not a pairing I generally like, but they made it actually work (and also changed the ages so it was appropriate, lol)

 

I also love non-linear timelines. Another of my favorite fanfics does this, arranging chapters thematically rather than chronologically. It's so well-done.

 

Another thing that I love, not like as a general rule of fanfiction, but when I'm looking for something simple to pass the time, is group chat fics. Trollhunters has a lot of pretty good ones. Trashy romance fics are fun, too (there's a WIP Zutara trilogy that is basically just The Selection but set in Avatar...I don't have any interest in The Selection original series, but the very concept of Zuko having to play The Bachelor while also dealing with his issues with Ozai and Aang having to learn the other four elements while pretending to be Zuko's cousin is just...inexplicably hilarious). I don't read these types of fics super often, but they're good for mindless entertainment.

Yes to all of this. College AU or college aged in general.

I don't read much ATLA fanfic but omg that sounds freaking amazing.

Oh! Yes! Group chat fics for the win! They can be super fun to read. Especially if the cast of characters has a good dynamic.

I also enjoy social media inspired fics.

I also love l fics that make me look at a character differently. I can't think of one off the top of my head, but I know that I like it when a new facet of a character I love is explored.

I also love when a fic makes me smile. There have been several times I have laughed out loud!

 

Or when they give me warm fuzzies (often more romantic fics). 

 

I also love when I can tell that the author is invested in what they are doing. I really like goofy tropes. I pretend I don't, but I do.

OH, I thought of something else! I love fics that feel like canon! I love a good AU, I even love future fics (As is obvious by the things I've written.) But I also love fics where an author enhances (not necessarily changes) already existing material.

Slice of life. I really like it. If it's a oneshot/drabble even better. It lets me enjoy the character(s) even more, like if they were really alive, you know. That's fantastic.

For me, there's rivals to lovers (OBVIOUSLY LOL)  enemies to lovers, friends to lovers, bed sharing, MUTUAL PINING, unrequited pining, FLUFFFF, Slow Burn, Hurt/ Comfort (only if it's not too extreme- think soft and cuddly), forced close proximity, cinderella moments, virtual platforms (facebook/ email/ youtube) rescue missions, teamwork, and so many more! 

 

AU's including: coffeeshop, neighbors/ roomates, college, fairytale,

So many of ours overlap! That's fantastic.   FIX IT FICS AND MISSING SCENES YES. How could I forget that one? Time travel is hit or miss for me, it's weird. Sometimes it works for me and sometimes it doesn't. I wasn't a big fan of Dr. Who, but I like some versions of Time Travel, like I liked The Last Magician although the second book is ridiculously long and I'm starting to loose a bit of interest. 

 

What else is there to like? OH! I love when I see people do artwork from fic! I ADORE seeing things that I've imagined realized.

 

Also, I like the openness of fanfic. How it can be written and interpreted so many different ways. I like that it's not tied down to anything 'canon' per say. A lot of people might not feel that way (I didn't use to) but it's so fun to to see people bend the rules a bit.

Yes! I agree. Now that you mention this, sometimes when I read a FF that's really well-written I would easily imagine the whole thing (and even hear the character voices, like if it were a real episode) that's when I know it's a fantastic story, I love that too. And sometimes I will actually draw some scene I really liked.
