I could love this movie just for his handful of dialogue lines.

Kristoff and his freaking reindeer, OMG. I loved them. And Elsa. And Anna. All the characters were just so damn likeable, and the jokes were hilarious.

This killed me

"Let it Go" was, of course, glorious. I also loved the "fixer upper" number that the trolls sang - even in a fantasy setting, your family will still find a way to embarrass you in front of potential love interests   I was also thrilled to see Rapunzel and Flynn *cough I mean Eugene Fitzherbert cough* make a cameo in the background of one of the scenes. It makes sense that both stories would take place in the same world (European style society, storybook magic, modern lingo, sentient pack animals, and song numbers with a pop feel ;) ).

Am I the only one who thought the thing with Anna's fiancé kinda came out of left field, though? They didn't really hint at it prior to the scene where he reveals his true colors. I wish he had been a tragic villain, forced into his actions by some external force, rather than just suddenly power-hungry and evil. Like maybe his father the king ordered him to usurp power in Arendelle, and he was convinced that he had to kill Elsa even though he felt bad about it...I dunno. It just made him seem kind of one-dimensional. I loved the "Weaseltown" villain though  . Overall, the writers did a good job of 'remixing' a lot of the classic Disney tropes so that the story felt simultaneously familiar and fresh (true sisterly love saving the day = yesplz).

Also, I kind of want this t-shirt.

Me too. Kristoff's "duet" with Sven was my favorite part of the movie.

Your thoughts, Mary? We talked for like 3 hours at that Thai place, but it seems like we discussed everything EXCEPT the movie ^^; Who was your fave character? What song did you like best?

Me, too!! Olaf still annoyed me at times, but he was most certainly more enjoyable than the trailers led you to believe. I didn't think he needed his own song number, though  The only part of that I liked of his song was the puddle joke.

Yeah. That also seemed really random to me. I guess he's a really good actor? *shrug* It was definitely not what I was expecting. I thought that they would kiss and then nothing would happen and they'd realize it wasn't true love and he'd think that killing Elsa was the only way to save her and be a bad guy that way. That, or the adventure would last more than a day and he'd gradually get power-hungry from being in charge of Arendelle for x amount of time and that's why he'd be bad. I wasn't convinced.

Your thoughts, Mary? We talked for like 3 hours at that Thai place, but it seems like we discussed everything EXCEPT the movie  ^^; Who was your fave character? What song did you like best?

But hey, that was a great conversation.

My favorite character was Kristoff. Hands down. Anna and Elsa were great and I LOVED that it was their true sisterly love that saved the day, rather than true romantic love. I also really like how Kristoff and Anna didn't get married at the end. They didn't even exchange "I love you's." They got a kiss and nothing more was said about what happened to that. I thought it was really fresh and new for Disney to not tie up romantic loose ends, because they almost always do. But yeah, Kristoff was still my favorite character. He was really funny. Especially at the end of the unnecessary Olaf song when Olaf's like "I'm finally gonna figure out what happens to snow in summer" and Kristoff's like "I'm gonna tell him" and Anna says "Don't you dare." It reminded me of the Princess and the Frog when the firefly was singing about his love for Evangeline and Naveen was about to tell him that Evangeline was a star and Tiana was like "Don't you dare."

Also, LOVED LOVED LOVED that one shot of the book near the beginning and the writing was in Futhark. I didn't get a close look at it, but I think it was the same Futhark runes that Dreamworks used when they made How to Train Your Dragon (which I believe was Younger Futhark). Either way, I thought it was cool, since I think the fairy tale this is based off of takes place in Sweden. Also loved how the actual words of the coronation that made Elsa Queen weren't in English. It was cool.

My favorite song was definitely the opening one, "Frozen Heart." It just sounds soooooo cool. I loved the beat and the rhythm.

I mean just listen to this thing!!

The vocalizations over the Disney logo and at the end during the big thaw were also really cool.

I think part of the problem was how silly, cartoonish, and modern it seemed compared to the rest of the movie. The whole tone shifted like 180 degrees for that song number. I loved the joke that came out of it ("someone's gotta tell him"), but the scenery and atmosphere still seemed at odds with the rest of the film. I think that's one of the reasons why Olaf came off as annoying, honestly - it wasn't so much his personality as it was his character design. He was too much of a caricature, and thus felt out of place in the landscape of the movie. I mean, the stop-motion Burl Ives Snowman from freaking Rudolph looked more realistic, even though the animation in that film is choppy and stilted and hokey

But hey, that was a great conversation.

Damn straight

My favorite character was Kristoff. Hands down. Anna and Elsa were great and I LOVED that it was their true sisterly love that saved the day, rather than true romantic love.

He was my favorite too. Sharing carrots with his freaking reindeer >.<

And yes, the message that true love can be platonic as well as romantic was fabulous. I also liked the idea that being desperate for romance can lead you to choose someone who's probably not all the great for you.

It reminded me of the Princess and the Frog when the firefly was singing about his love for Evangeline and Naveen was about to tell him that Evangeline was a star and Tiana was like "Don't you dare."

Yeah, I see the parallel. Olaf kind of reminded me of Ray in that they were both comic relief characters with weird teeth. Except Olaf was written more like a goofy sidekick, whereas Ray ended up being more tragic and endearing.

Also, LOVED LOVED LOVED that one shot of the book near the beginning and the writing was in Futhark. I didn't get a close look at it, but I think it was the same Futhark runes that Dreamworks used when they made How to Train Your Dragon (which I believe was Younger Futhark).

I noticed that too! I was like, "huh, they took a page out of HTTYD for that one..."

My favorite song was definitely the opening one, "Frozen Heart." It just sounds soooooo cool. I loved the beat and the rhythm.

The beat and rhythm were awesome. Overall I think some of the lyrics could've been better, however - but that's true for most of the songs in the film. While visually stunning (those camera angles!) and conceptually well crafted, the song numbers lacked the clever lyrics and wordplays that characterized many of the "Disney Renaissance" movies of the 90s. "Frozen Heart" certainly included some nice foreshadowing, though...

I have to agree with Katie and say that "Let it Go" is my favorite (not counting Kristoff's humorous little reindeer duet). I love Idina Menzel's voice, and the song just has great re-listenability (is that a word?). The part where she declares "here I stand" and stamps her foot down? Still giving me chills even now.

Very interesting conversation. Still thinking about parts of it. Like the cultures where blue doesn't exist. How'd they describe the IDOJ forum skin, I wonder....

That's definitely it. His actual dialogue wasn't annoying and was usually pretty funny, especially the impaled part. He was just so completely unconcerned and blasé about it, which is why I died. The rest of his lines were mostly so-so, though. I like that he showed up as an inanimate snowman in the beginning though and then only came alive when he was recreated during "Let It Go" after Elsa's powers became strong enough.

I agree about the music. It was very memorable, but still doesn't have the witty and intelligent word uses in some of the older ones. Like some of those 90s ones had really sophisticated vocabulary (The Lion King and The Hunchback of Notre Dame come to mind in that department). But definitely the best of the movies Disney's made in a long time.

The animation in that song is the best in the entire movie, I think. I love the way they animated Elsa's ice powers freezing everything.

Also, that Rapunzel and Flynn cameo you spotted? Apparently the animators put it in without telling the director.

It's interesting that neither of you felt like Prince Hans had much of a lead up to being a bad guy, because I was calling that exact twist straight from the beginning with him and saw it all the way. What shocked me was how long they took to actually reveal that side of him in the story! They really held out right until the end. Almost fooled me into thinking that maybe I'd been wrong about him! As a villain, yeah, he ended up pretty generic, but I definitely saw the puzzle pieces in place for it to happen.

Elsa is obviously my favorite character, if you can't tell by everything around my signature. But Kristoff was great. Second best!

I just adored the sister dynamic, too. It tugged at my heartstrings sooooooooo much. Gosh. I think it's probably partly due to the fact that I am from a two sister family. And being the oldest, I know what it's like to have that responsibility. I was constantly told my entire life to be mindful of my sister and her asthma and to not do anything to aggravate it. I still remember the day I gave her a terrible asthma attack, and the crushing guilt and panic that followed. So Elsa really struck a chord with me.

I loved the fact that they really went all-out musical with this. "Do You Want to Build a Snowman" and "For the First Time in Forever" (and its reprise) were fantastic ways of communicating the story, and beautiful to listen to as well. And of course, "Let it Go" is just spectacular. And the little reindeer song was adorable.

I have a few nitpicks about the story, but overall I just loved so much of it that I'm happy to overlook the small flaws. Seriously ranking this among my favorite Disney films of all time. Definitely top 10. Maybe even top 5. I'm just so happy that Disney made something I can love this much as an adult. I know a lot of my devotion to the classics is made up of nostalgia, so this is kind of a big deal to have a NEW Disney film break into my top tier of favorites.

It's not like I wasn't getting weird vibes from Hans, because I definitely was. I figured out pretty early on that there had to be something "wrong" with him, just based on the way the narrative framed his introduction and relationship with Anna. I just didn't expect it to be straight up, classical "bad guy" greed for power. Because the movie subverted a number of character tropes, I was expecting the deal with Hans to be a bit more...complicated? Which is why it caught me totally off guard when he just turned out to be generically evil.

Overall, I liked the movie a lot. It was super fun, charming, and communicated a number of positive messages. Disney is really working hard to maintain its image while also challenging some of the more problematic themes it's espoused over the years (though it seems the films are improving on a feminist level more quickly than they are on a character design and racial/cultural diversity level). I definitely have to give the company props for trying, and hope it continues to strive for better representation in the future.

P.S. I've listened to "Let it Go" like 30 times since I got home. I even forced my Mom to watch the video on youtube

Ahh, I see. I definitely didn't think of it in any nuanced way. I just kept sitting there the entire time noting each clue that lead be to believe he was a jerkface in diguise who just wanted the crown. Haha. You gave the movie more credit than I did, it seems. ;)

Yay improvement! :) And I agree. I hope to see more diversity in the future. But I'm happy with the steps they've taken so far. We've got a ways to go, but we are moving along the right path.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the movie. :) Like I said in my first post, I LOVED this movie, but I know not everyone will feel the same. I do feel though that almost everyone could enjoy the movie at least in some fashion, because it really is well done.

My thoughts exactly. Except I didn't see the bad guy part coming at all.

And YES. This was a huge improvement to Disney's feminist levels.

And the songs I've been playing over and over are Frozen Heart and Vuelie ^_^

The main reason I didn't suspect that he was just a power-hungry jerkface who wanted the crown was that his little run-in with Anna at the beginning seemed like a genuine accident. If he had made a more "planned" entrance and was introduced as a suitor for the queen, but then quickly tried to woo Anna, I would have pegged him as a stereotypical bad guy. Instead, he met the princess and then fell into the harbor - and you usually don't get card-carrying villain types with cute horses who cause wacky hijinks in boats. >.<

One of the other things that led me to believe that he would be more nuanced was his song number with Anna. Obviously it was corny and showed exactly why you shouldn't give too much credence to infatuation, but the song gave him so much screentime that I figured his motivations would fall into a gray area rather than outright villainy.

Guess I was wrong

:-) This is a really interesting discussion. And I keep popping in and out. I knew something would happen with Hans. Mostly because I fell in love with Kristoff. :-)  Also, I really did love the sister aspect of this movie. I know I would do anything for my younger sister. Anything to keep her safe and so I also felt like I identified with Elsa. Plus, I've always been kind of an outcast and so her song, Let It Go just spoke to me on sooooooo many levels.

The reprise of For the First Time in Forever just about made me cry. Just the raw emotion building up inside of Elsa, while her sister is trying to calm her down, trying to let her know that she believes in her. That she loves her.

I think more than anything to this movie carried across the message to me that love breaks the ice around our hearts when we let it. We are so guarded. We have to be. So many people out there who could abuse us. Could betray us. But love, TRUE LOVE, not just romantic love, but the love between sisters, between friends, between people is very powerful. I know I'm way over thinking, but that's what I came out of the theater thinking.

You're not over-thinking it at all, dearie! That was totally the core theme of the movie ^_^ (Disney sure loves its love ;) )
