I removed the potentially offensive part. I think. It'll probably be fine.

Yes, but offending the religion of my readers tends to end badly for me ![]()

It depends on how you go about it.
If it's in character, it's fine. But if you just are like...
TAKE THAT RELIGION... then it's more weird then offensive.
But I don't think you would do such a thing. ![]()

It's just awkward trying to be historically accurate with the characters, because 1870s America was a deeply religious and socially turbulent place. People took stuff like sin and damnation pretty seriously, and (like today) they often used religion as an excuse to do pretty appalling/racist/sexist things. A character like Tex would likely experience high anxiety in a church environment, and she would probably resent churchgoers as a result.
And then there's the question of religious affiliation - like, Sheen would obviously be Catholic because he's from Mexico, whereas Libby would be a Protestant based on her backstory...this would almost certainly be a sticking point in any relationship they might strike up. Add to that the fact that people of different races generally didn't go to service together (except out on the very fringes of the frontier, where people didn't have the luxury of being picky), and bam: instant tension. Because this is a JN fic and is supposed to be somewhat light-hearted, I don't want to delve too deeply into things like racism and religious intolerance, but I can't just ignore them either. Gotta keep it toned down, but present...it's a tough thing to pull off.

I just finished reading through this. I have to say, with a few exceptions, I'm not a fan of AU fanfictions...
This is one of those exceptions! I really like how you incorporated all the characters we know and love into a western time and setting. I imagine this is pretty muchhow they would all be. I thought Sheen as a gold-mining prospector was the funniest thing I had read... until I read about Bolbi as a doctor! ![]()
I like the character development with Tex - We first see her as just an assassin for Eustace (great work on him, btw), but gradually, she's showing a softer side, thanks to Sheriff Jimmy. I'm enjoying learning about both their backstories, and I like how their relationship is developing (I can't stand fanfics that are pure romance, and nothing else).
I love how you use all these western cliches (the bar scene, ordering milk, "this town ain't big enough for the two of us", etc.), and all the callbacks to the show (Nick walking with a limp and sucking his cigar like a lolipop, Jimmy's hair-brush device, The Encyclopedia of Infinite Knowledge, Jimmy's backstory, etc.).
(Butch's "beat you like a rented mule" line cracked me up, as my dad always says that when we play boardgames!
)
I'm looking forward to more!
