Wowee wow wow wow. That was unexpectedly HILARIOUS. OMG. I loved it. It was so much fun. It was like they all decided, "you know what? Yeah. We made everyone cry like babies last episode. Let's bring out some smiles."

 

And they DID and it was GLORIOUS. I'm totally fine with this episode being more light-hearted as it deals with this rather serious shiznet. Because looool it was great.

 

Mary is AWESOME. I'm so happy. I love what they did with her, and how she interacts with both John and Sherlock.

 

The gags with the fake-outs for "how Sherlock did it" were fantastic. I'm basically asexual, but I think I'd temporarily shelve that if Sherlock ever crashed through my window and came at me like he did to Molly in the first fake-out. AND THEN THE MORIARITY KISS FAKE-OUT. OMG. God, I can't imagine how much fun it must've been for all these actors to film these scenes.

 

Also, John's reaction to Sherlock being alive was priceless. And Sherlock trying to get his attention was absurd (and adorable). And gosh I'm just so excited about everything. And the fandom reaction has of course been top notch already.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

EVERYTHING IS BEAUTIFUL. THIS WAS AMAZING AND I DO NOT CARE IN THE SLIGHTEST THAT IT HAD SO MUCH FANSERVICE (though maybe I will if the whole season is like that).

Also, without giving too much away, I loved it. They must've had a blast writing/acting this one. Some people don't like it because it's not as "case serious", but I didn't find myself caring that much about that, haha. From what I hear, things are going to spiral into darker things in the coming episodes, so I'll take light-heartedness where I can.

In a bad way?

Oh no, I liked the fanservice. There were a lot of funny, light-hearted moments that were quite enjoyable. I was pleased to see that after two years of being "dead", Sherlock seems more...self-assured? of his own humanity and a bit less grave. His little tête-à-tête with Mycroft was interesting. I loved seeing Molly again (LOLed when she introduced her beau), and I'm quite fond of Mary. I'm pleased that they went with Martin Freeman's real-life gal for the role Makes their relationship seem charmingly natural. The cameo with Benedict Cumberbatch's real life parents seemed out of left field, though I wonder if it would've been better to save that for a later episode.

 

I liked it! Of course, I still hope they tell us how he did it.

I don't mind not knowing 100% how he did it, as long as some plausible explanations are thrown out there. Besides, I've heard so many great theories on tumblr, I almost don't want a canon explanation to overturn them!

The lack of "seriousness" wasn't really the issue for me. I feel like the plot was SO secondary to everything that was going on that it could've been pushed into the background entirely. The episode could've focused SOLELY on character relationships and been more cohesive, IMO. But then again, when you only have THREE FREAKING EPISODES in a season, I guess you have to stuff plot in where you can

I actually had a lot of trouble getting through this episode. It felt so disjointed to me, and I didn't find the drunk scene as funny as I think I was meant to find it. In spite of that, I still very much enjoyed what this episode offered. Especially seeing it in the bigger context.

 

Sherlock's Best Man speech was amazing. Hands down. He's gotten OODLES of character development, and his relationship with John has developed as well, and I love how honest they can be with each other now about their feelings.

 

Mary continues to be AWESOME. I was rather terrified the entire episode that she was being poisoned, since I heard the end of this episode leaves viewers in horrible tears. So it was a giant relief that it was just Sherlock backing down and withdrawing from the party that was meant to be the tearjerker scene. (Though I'm still terrified for next week, which definitely is going to be a cry-fest.)

 

I need to watch it again now that I know what happens. I liked that no one really died this time around. Watching it a second time without the stress of OH GOD WHEN IS MARY GOING TO DIE will be way better.

 

It was a very disjointed episode though, and oddly comedic. Initially watching it, this didn't sit well with me, but upon reflection I'm much more okay with it. Viewing the season as a whole, this is essentially a "Tales of Ba Sing Se" episode, which is meant to fill in the time between the first episode and the last, inform us of what's been going on, and give everyone character development.

 

I still think the drunken scene was overplayed. As bust-out HILARIOUS "sitty thing" was, I wasn't convinced Sherlock would suck that much at deductions while inebriated. Didn't seem right to me. Losing his inhibitions and saying stupid crap to everyone I could definitely see. But failing at what he does best? By THAT MUCH? Hrm.

 

And also didn't like that their client in that scene didn't realize and/or care that they were both drunk of their asses.

 

Anyway. I'm starting to sound like a party pooper.

 

Onto things I did like!
 

Again, the best man speech. Wonderful.

 

Mary. She is my homegirl.

 

John's old commander guy. LOVED HIM. He was excellent.

 

THE ENTIRE BIT WHERE JOHN WAS ASKING SHERLOCK TO BE BEST MAN AND SHERLOCK WAS FROZEN. AHHHHH. I could replay that all day!

 

John and Sherlock's honesty with each other. I want to squish them both with massive hugs.

 

SHERLOCK LOVES TO DANCE. And poor baby didn't get to dance at the end.

 

John is going to be a daddy!!! Well, unless they gruesomely kill Mary/baby next episode...

 

That adorable kid. Archie? I think. Yeah. He was great.

 

The random cases they listed/half explained. Loved that.

 

"A Waltz for Mary and John". MY HEART. AGAIN.

 

Seriously, there was so much to love. The things that irked me I think will irk me less once we have the full season story arc (well, other than the drunk scene). Though...also not sure how I felt about that mind-room Sherlock was in with the ladies and Mycroft, etc. Cool concept, but I kind of wish that had been done differently.

 

Anyway. Overall: emotional excellence. Some good laughs. But...as a stand-alone episode...this ranks near the bottom of the list for Sherlock. For me, at least. Just felt too incoherent.

 

But being near the bottom of the list for Sherlock is still being miles above most shows, so don't take this to mean I didn't enjoy the episode!

Huh, I had kind of the opposite reaction, Katie! But I can see where you are coming from. I was having too much of a good time to sit back and truly analyze it. :-) I do agree that it was basically filler. Lighthearted and fun.. Preparing us for next week when we are certainly going to be crying our eyes out for another year.
