I wrote this short story for church youth group.
Sandi’s hair whipped on her face as she ran. She didn’t know exactly what she was running from. Was it the pressure of school, her pushy mom, her annoying brother, her crush that wouldn’t notice her or her ex-friends? Or was it that she just couldn’t find her place in the world? Whatever it was, it had driven her to the edge. She couldn’t stand it any longer. Her legs took her to the 200 foot cliff outside town. As she stood on the edge, her mind raced. Should she do it? Should she jump? It started raining. Water ran down her face as well as tears. She breathed deeply. She thought about why she started running. Her mother kept ranting about God. Her mother wanted her to become a Christian. Sandi knew there was no way God could forgive her. Not after all she had done. Her mother said God can forgive anyone if they let him. Sandi turned that over in her mind. Before her mom became a Christian, her mom wasn’t the best person. Sandi thought and thought. She made up her mind. She knelt in the pouring rain. “God, I know I’m a sinner, I know Jesus died so I wouldn’t. I would like you to live in my heart. I’d like to be forgiven.” Sandi stood. She felt new and refreshed. When she turned to head back towards town, she slipped in the mud. She fell backwards off the cliff. She tried to grab the edge, but it was too late.
