Chapter Seven
In Which the Obligatory Action Chapter Dangerously Twists
I appeared a nanosecond later in their nifty little base they’d set up on this barren little planet. There they were, sitting calmly and coolly, as if they had been waiting for me to arrive. It was all very clichéd.
In fact, it caught me off guard. I’d been planning to catch them unawares, but here they were. I shifted uncomfortably, but then smiled a dazzling smile. At least, I hoped it was dazzling. At the very least it was annoying.
“Hey there, Cat. Can I call you Cat? Anyway, I was wondering if there was any way this could be resolved without you getting your butt kicked.” I looked hopefully at her. “I’m kind of against beating up little kids that aren’t related to me.”
She smirked, the expression strange on her young face. She couldn’t have been older than eight. “’Resolved?’ An odd choice of words with a universe-altering battle looming so near.”
My face fell. “So now I have to kick your butt.” I sighed. “All right, you know the rules…”
“I’ll be the one beating you,” she said decisively. “And there are no rules.”
“Of course not,” I replied, rolling my eyes. “I was joking. You know what a joke is, right? Because you obviously know that there is no chance you will beat me.”
That was apparently the wrong thing to say. Or the right thing. Depends on how you look at it.
Either way, she got really angry.
Meanwhile, Evil Jimmy just kind of sat back and enjoyed the show. He was just using her. And that made me angry. Evil or not, being used is not cool.
Then I felt really calm all of a sudden. The clone was definitely just waiting for one of us to destroy the other so he could implement his nefarious plan. And Catalina was getting more and more furious as I ignored her rising threats.
Now, there are two signs that tell you that you’re fighting an angry poofer. One, they tend to put a lot more energy into their attacks. Meaning they throw things really hard. Two, attacks generally lack creativity. This can be a good thing, or a bad thing, depending on how you look at it. Anyway.
An example: the incredibly large piano descending from the sky.
I, being extraordinarily awesome, shifted the planet a few degrees so that the piano fell on Evil Jimmy. That put him out of commission for a while. “You’ve been watching too many cartoons,” I tutted, laughing to myself.
She was beyond words. Obviously, Catalina was not used to being bested, or challenged, for that matter. Not to mention she had anger issues. A volley of flaming arrows now sped towards me.
I poofed behind her and tapped her shoulder. She whirled around and bared her little teeth at me, but I had already poofed about fifty feet away.
*poof*
“Over here!”
*poof*
“Can’t catch me!”
*poof*
Crack. “Ow…” I moaned. “That’s not fair.” I peeled myself off the brick wall she’d placed in front of me. “I have to hand it to you, that was good.”
She hissed, “There are no rules. There can be no fairness.”
I shrugged. “Seriously, too many cartoons, darlin’.”
“There’s no such thing as too much cartoons!” a rough voice came from over a ridge. We both spun towards the sound, and I paled. There they were, all of them, coming closer. No! They had to stay away, they weren’t safe here, and they had to go, now!
Luckily, I noticed the boulder hurtling towards my head in time to duck. But not in time to prevent it from continuing towards them. I gasped, my heart anticipating the pain. Somewhere I heard Catalina’s shriek of triumph.
Abruptly it turned into surprise and pain. I whirled around again in time to see Sheen tackle his sister to the ground. My heart restarted as I saw the rest running up.
“Holograms,” Jimmy said, smiling at me.
I stepped to the side as an angry tiger flailed and missed me by inches, falling into a large hole in the ground. “I don’t really need your help. You’re just in danger here.” I scowled at all of them.
Then we were plunged into pitch blackness. I swore under my breath and poofed everyone into a safe bunker a few hundred feet away. “Changing physics? Nice.”
I heard her coming and poofed some cool glasses so I could see. She didn’t look to happy to see me, but she wasn’t angry anymore. The look on her face was cold, calculating.
That was not good.
Some medieval armor would come in handy. I smiled as I lowered my visor and raised my shield.
But my cavalier attitude wasn’t real. My metal-clad knees would’ve been clanking. I didn’t know if I was really strong enough to defeat this kid. I was about to find out.
Crash. I stumbled as something hit me at, oh, I’d say, about sixty miles per hour. It dented my armor, that’s for sure. Poofing out and leaving the suit on its knees, I watched from a distance.
The brat was clever. She was poofing different objects of varying size and pointiness about a foot from my suit, all going at insane velocities. My armor didn’t last long, and she screamed when she realized it was empty.
I thought as hard as I could. She attacked with brute strength, but chose weapons directed towards weaknesses. How did you beat something like that?
Then I was falling, a deep crevice opening up in the ground beneath me. I poofed back to the surface and turned the lights back on. Funny I hadn’t thought to do that earlier. She threw another large object at me.
She might not have been very creative, but I couldn’t keep up with her. Defense wasn’t fun. Her hits were rapid and just kept gaining strength. I didn’t know where the next one would come from, and it took all my concentration to escape and dodge. Her hits began to find their mark more and more frequently. I wasn’t tired- poofing didn’t drain my energy- but my mind was. My attempts grew desperate.
I was going to be defeated by an evil eight-year old.
My mind couldn’t think anymore. I automatically ducked as some missile flew over my head and exploded in the distance. I lost my balance and fell to my knees.
She appeared in front of me, gleeful as a child on Christmas. “I’m going to annihilate you,” she hissed.
I barely registered her. My brain had been stuck in a blender and she was pressing puree repeatedly. She was going to get me eventually. Poof, poof, poof, who knew how? Either way, one thing was certain. In the end, I wouldn’t exist anymore.
Catalina, of course, was a typical villain, taking her time to gloat. We both knew she had me beat. There was no way to stop her. I was too tired to think. Too tired to- no way, too tired… no… too…
Take away her powers.
Could I? Was it possible? Was it that simple?
I dredged up the last of my willpower and raised my eyes to hers.
*poof*
We both felt it go. And I saw it- everything about her was now inexplicably smaller. She was now nothing more than a little kid.
Catalina blanched and screamed. “NO! How could you? Impossible!” Her face was livid, but there was no power behind it.
I staggered to my feet and said tiredly, “It’s over, darlin’.” I poofed her tied up.
She struggled violently and snarled at me, her tiny teeth bared. Then
I poofed us back to the bunker, which Jimmy had undoubtedly unlocked by now.
There they all were, the clone tied up, all safe and sound. I sighed in relief. “Hey, Sheen!” I called. “Don’t worry about your sis. She’s just as normal as you now.”
Cindy snorted and rolled her eyes. “Yeah. Normal.”
“You took away her power?” Jimmy guessed.
“Yeah,” I growled, “and I will never do it again. The Poofer won’t stand for it.”
“Who is ‘The Poofer’?” Libby asked, complete with air quotes.
Nolan and I looked at each other. “Shannon.”
“No one else could do it,” Nolan sighed, shaking his head in both admiration and exasperation.
I looked around at them all, my heart singing. “Come on,” I said, smiling happily. “Let’s dance.”

Chapter Eight
In Which the Story Ends
“Laser lights are totally cool!” Sheen jumped up and waved his hand in front of a spotlight, turning his hand different colors. “Look! My hand’s a rainbow!”
I edged away from him and found myself twirling as Nolan grabbed my hand and spun me around. “Great party,” he said, smiling at me. I grinned back and went to go get some more sugar.
Carl was busy stuffing his face with mini hotdogs while I drank about half a bottle of soda in one go. “I’m glad we’re not in danger anymore,” he sighed, and I poofed him a couple new platters to keep him occupied. I didn’t want him in danger on the dance floor.
Libby couldn’t be bothered, busy with all the CDs I’d given her for tonight. So I just waved to her and went on my way.
“So,” I started, leaning against the wall next to Jimmy. “Some adventure, huh?”
He glanced over at me. “Yeah, actually. We kind of almost got killed.”
I giggled. “Yeah, that happens a lot to me, believe it or not.”
Jimmy grimaced. “I can believe it.”
I poked him playfully. “It happens to you a lot, too.”
“Yeah, but I don’t cause it on purpose just to amuse myself.”
I frowned as I considered this. “But- it’s so fun! Believe me, you’ll thank me later.”
He laughed and looked at me with a quizzical expression. “Why did you come here in the first place, anyway? I’ve been wondering all day.” He cocked his head.
It was my turn to laugh. “No one will ever know. Because I don’t even know. I just…” I trailed off.
“Felt like it?” Jimmy suggested, and we both laughed.
I looked out at the dance floor, then back at him with a smug smile. “Here comes the thanking me part. See you later.” I strolled away.
“Hey, Neu- Jimmy. You want to dance?”
He looked away from my retreating figure, a little shocked. “Um… sure.” He took Cindy’s outstretched hand and they walked away together.
I giggled to myself and tapped Nolan’s shoulder. “It’s time,” I said, using a spooky voice.
He jumped a little and turned towards me hopefully. “Time to go home?” I nodded, and he pumped his fist. “Finally!”
I raised an eyebrow. “What, you didn’t have fun today?”
He gave me a look. “Between you-“ He thought a moment, then started ticking off on his fingers- “annoying me, being evil and almost killing me, and almost getting killed yourself? No.”
I smiled. “Okay then, let’s go home.”
*poof*
Across the floor, Cindy breathed a sigh of relief. “She’s finally gone,” she said, smiling at her dance partner.
He shook his head. “She’ll be back.” Jimmy leaned forward and kissed her cheek. “There is no doubt in my mind about that.”
