I like Betty a lot. She's way different from Paulina from Danny Phantom, she only liked Danny Phantom not Danny Fenton and thought he was a looser. Well I mean we saw she liked Danny when he revealed himself in the TV movie Control Freaks so that showed she'd had liked him either way. But Betty never treated Jimmy mean from the begining, she was one of those nice/popular girls we rarley ever get to see on TV these days.

Wow...I can't believe I've never posted in this topic before, because what people may not know about me is the fact that I am a Jimmy/Betty shipper, not Jimmy/Cindy...

 

 

Now, both pairings have their ups and downs. Cindy and Jimmy are both into science, but their arrogance and self-righteousness (which may sound like an insult, but is why they are so fun to watch) gets in the way. They always need to find a way to one-up eachother even in later seasons, but you can see that they have chemistry and care for another.

 

Betty and Jimmy are a little different. Betty doesn't seem to have similar interests, but respects Jimmy and even is fine with encouraging him with whatever he is doing. (inventing props in "Out, Darn Spotlight" (even asking him if he was trying out for the play, if I remember correctly) and even being wiling to try out his invention in "Vanishing Act") Jimmy also likes her, obviously, partly due to looks, but with pretty much every other female classmate in the series treating him with little respect, it would make sense that he would fall for her.

 

I think that the main problem was a lack of screen time. Betty appears in 4 episodes (not counting the fantasy in Operation: Rescue Jet Fusion) and never truly gets a chance to have her character explored.

 

Now...about the whole "Vanishing Act" thing. I would probably put that in my bottom five episodes of the series, because I kind of think that it was a way to move past the whole relationship between Jimmy and Betty so that they could focus more on the main relationship, which since the movie was pretty much Jimmy/Cindy. But to be honest, Cindy was getting in here face and with her getting annoyed by Sheen...Sheen is my main man in the show and even I get annoyed by his antics here and there. And really, it was one scene with Cindy, so you can't really base the whole character off of that one scene.

 

For the most part, Betty seems like a nice, sweet young lady who actually respects Jimmy without having to hide the respect with pride. (Cindy is still totally cool, though) I think that the hate for the character is a little extreme. I know that Jimmy/Cindy is the more popular pairing, but her character is very good.

 

Actually, the funniest thing the character brought to the show was Jimmy's extreme awkward reactions around her. One of my favorite moments of the series is how he rationalized spending time with her in "One Of Us" by doing "further investigation" at her house. Comic gold.

Nice analysis, Seth. I don't ship Jimmy/Betty, but I always liked her character, and never got why some people seem to hate her so much (aside from the fact that she's in the way of their favourite pairing). I definitely agree that Jimmy's reactions to her are always hilarious. That part you mentioned from "One of Us" always cracked me up too. I like how matter-of-fact he says that, like even he is utterly convinced that's why he's spending time with her.
