But I disliked it a lot to read that. 'Little Red Riding Hood' had been my dearest fairytale when I've been little.

Parents obviously need to watch what their children get.

Child's mind is a delicate thing and it's important what will be the result of raiseing a kid. One word - Teletubbies!
Well actually you can't compare the Brother Grimm's fairytales and the Teletubbies. Fairytales are a valuable cultural treasure and even though I admit, they seem rather violent at some times, I myself, can't put up with the idea to let them get lost. ^_^ It'd be a great cultural loss in my eyes.
Besides, even though we may see the violence and all, in the end for the children there is a certain black-white difference: The good win over the evil ones. Children may even feel safer that way: For every witch there is a heroic prince to make her whither away, every curse can be lifted with the power of a good heart.
As for my point of view, they just belong into our culture and I'd be horrified if I met somebody here who's never heard of them before. (Or when they mess them up in movies:
I once saw a kinda 'crossover' Cinderella and Leonardo Da Vinci. This is so pathetically screwed up! )
Well I grew up loving them, so yeah. I didn't have the sudden, irresistable urge to torture any old ladies or wolves because of them. Nor did they make me accepting violence. I didn't think about those things when I've been little. They were just stories. I think you need to differ between our view and a children's view on them^_^

"They just split up. Doesn't that ever happen here?"
"No. We either live happily ever after or die of horrible curses."

Uhhh....the Grimm's fairytales aren't the only tales I've ever read in my life, of course. My grandma has a lot of old tale books from all over the world, and my mom has her own collection as well. ^_^ In all honesty, I have lost interest in the Grimms' long ago, but my point was, that they are a great part of culture as well. I'm not trying to criticise you for disliking them, if you think that.OK, it's not the same, as Teletubbies. But, I still have reasons to do not like it much. Of course, kids like such tales without giving it much thoughts. Personally I think that, if you look at these tales more closely, you'll see that they are rather weird and not very meaningful. Just, not that much great as they are promouted for some reasons. If you search for, I'm sure, you can find a lot of way better tales, old and new, with more rich content. Sometimes, some tales just get much attention, some not. Thinking and looking around is always a good thing.
I'm totally in love with Czech fairytales, but also Chinese, African or Indian ones...and a plenty more from other countries.
Sorry, but I had to point that out^^...(my reading range isn't that limited after all)
Oh my, how did we get to fairytales? (uh yeah...my fault)
@Kaz: I've never seen that movie, but the name strikes me familiar ^_^

I didn't read Czech tales much, I also didn't read very much Chinese, or Indian, or African. Just some. My, probablly, favorite books were stories about Captain Blood, by Rafael Sabatini. LOL I also like kind and humanistic Soviet literature.
Sorry, I don't know these things, Kaz.
Your fault, Laura!
