Why would she come to see Hamlet with Cindy in it if she didn't care?

That's McBeth in Space, Krista. XD

Ugh. I typed that at like, one in the morning. Do you really think I was paying attention to names? All I could think of was Bolbi reciting poetic lines on stage. D:

Hmm, this topic made me think! Way to go, since I rarely do!

But back to the point: While most people portray Mrs. Vortex as being a pressuring mother who expects Cindy to do everything absolutely perfectly, that isn't necessarily true!

There are hints that she expects (or hopes for) a lot out of Cindy, but none that she ever gets too (or in the cases of a lot of those fanfictions out there, violently) disappointed when Cindy 'fails' her. Every parent wants their children (or child) to be good at everything, but most of them also understand that isn't always possible!

Think about it. Cindy's constantly trying to be the 'star' of everything--she's tried her hand at movie star fame several times, and there's never been any indication of pressure in any of these situations. She was just trying to do these things because, well, she thinks she's worth it and she wants to--not because her mom would 'murder' her if she didn't! It's a sort of conceited gene that runs in the Vortex line or something.

If getting pwned by an angry mother was the reason she did all this, Cindy probably wouldn't act the same way. The usual 'I'll kill you if this doesn't work out, Neutron', of course, but she'd at least show a touch of fear in case something went wrong, don't you think? She's eleven--she's not completely capable of masking all emotion, you know!

I think the first two hints mentioned here are irrelevant to anything about Cindy's mom! If anything, there's as little known about Mrs. Vortex as ever. It's up to the fans to interpret her as they wish, and the most common version of her is some sort of sick, abusive Nazi who expects way too much out of her daughter and gets frustrated when Cindy's incapable of doing everything she's supposed to do.

I disagree.

But then, that's just me!

Since it's been revived I'll do it as well:

Hint 1: I think the reason why I zeroed in on this as well is that the usual expression is "My mom's gonna kill me for this" (I can even picture Jimmy saying that), but I still think she just means it in that sense. Because Cindy is intelligent she may like to use more formal language ("murder").

Hint 2: I really think they were just playing up the sappiness of the moment here. In "The Tomorrow Boys" Libby said "That's the greatest gift anyone's ever given me", and nobody makes a big deal about that one.

Hint 3: "Stranded" isn't an original episode. It is a very, very good episode, but it is not very original. The "island romance" is a classic storytelling trope used since ancient times, and in it one of the lovers (typically the female) wishes they could stay forever.

I actually feel the opposite about Cindy's mom. I think that she's probably a very smothery parent who makes Cindy very special. One thing I realized is Cindy doesn't do a whole lot of bluffing as she does truly believe she is right most of the time (Like in WLK!, when she wanted to vote Jimmy out) and she was probably very sheltered from the dangers of the world, which was why she was so much more freaked out about being stuck on the island than Jimmy. I also see her as being very spoiled and the Vortexes as being a very affluent family compared to the Neutrons, a relatively modest family.

And on Hint 2, I think, if anything, we can infer more about her relationships with other children. In "Cindy Character Discussion" I described how I feel she descended in popularity as the series went on, which is why she usually only spends time with Libby and gets closer to the three boys towards the end of the series.

I think the main point of the episode was to humanize Cindy so we would stop thinking of her as Jimmy's bully and more as an insecure closet nerd.

Thank you for coming to my TEDTalk.
