As I have now seen the series several times I decided to rate the episodes to the best of my abilities. I can explain any particular ratings if anyone wishes and I would be interested to see if people here agree/disagree with them.

MY RATING SYSTEM:

10/10 - perfect (very rare)

9.5 or 9 - amazing (close to perfect)

8.5 - really good

8 - good

7.5 or 7 - decent but room for improvement

6.5 or 6 - average

5.5 or 5 - meh

4.5 to 3 - bad

2 or lower: horrible (very rare for this series)

NOTE: I am going by production codes available on nickandmore.com rather than common DVD and streaming listings for which episodes are in each season.

When Pants Attack - 8.5/10

Normal Boy - 8/10

Birth of a Salesman - 9/10

Brobot - 5.5/10

The Big Pinch - 6.5/10

Granny Baby - 7/10

Time Is Money - 8/10

Raise the Oozy Scab - 8/10

I Dream of Jimmy - 6/10

Jimmy on Ice - 6.5/10

Battle of the Bands - 8.5/10

Trading Faces - 7.5/10

See Jimmy Run - 3/10

Phantom of Retroland - 7.5/10

My Son the Hamster - 6/10

Hall Monster - 9.5/10

Hypno Birthday to You - 7.5/10

Krunch Time - 6/10

Substitute Creature - 6.5/10

Crime Sheen Investigation - 9.5/10
Safety First - 9/10

Journey to the Center of Carl - 8/10

Aughh! Wilderness - 9/10

Party at Neutron's - 9/10

Ultra-Sheen - 8/10

Broadcast Blues - 10/10

Professor Calamitous I Presume - 7/10

Eggpire Strikes Back - 10/10

Maximum Hugh - 6.5/10

Sleepless in Retroville - 6.5/10

Make Room for Daddy-O - 9.5/10

Love Potion - 10/10

Holly Jolly Jimmy - 5/10

Overall this season isn't as strong as seasons 2 or 3, especially in the first half. It started off with several mediocre or forgettable episodes ("Brobot", "The Big Pinch", "Granny Baby" and "I Dream of Jimmy" for example) which may have been because they were relying on freelance writers or still finding the tone for the series. Around 11 episodes in, though, it gets really good, with three of the perfect episodes ("Love Potion", "Broadcast Blues" and "Eggpire Strikes Back") coming up. The former is one of the best because it's the first one to really take the romance aspect of the show seriously, not to mention the hilarious subplot with Carl and Judy. Broadcast is really good because it's really funny, almost like SpongeBob's "Tentacle-Vision" done right. Eggpire genuinely feels like the movie. Except better. Overall I think several characters are underdeveloped at this point; Sheen is still mainly driven by his Ultra-Lord obsession, and Cindy feels more like an annoying popular girl as opposed to the angsty, Helga-like character she would become as the series progressed. "See Jimmy Run" is my least favorite from this season because of it's horrible portrayal of Jimmy and incredibly stupid ending. Most other episodes from this season with low points are just because I find them boring or dumb. I already explained why I don't like "Holly Jolly Jimmy" on that episode's discussion page.

A few episodes I should elaborate on -

Trading Faces - I was almost going to rate this episode higher, because the premise is super interesting. I think the episode would've bene much better though if it hadn't focused so much on Jimmy and Cindy humiliating each other - it would've been an excellent way to see more of Cindy's home life - and seeing Cindy pretend to be Jimmy around his parents probably would've been pretty funny - so many possibilities! Just sad that the ep only used a few of them. It should've been a double-length episode.

Maximum Hugh and Sleepless in Retroville - both of these episodes are mildly entertaining but made pointless because of their endings. In Maximum Hugh it is unclear whether Cindy was aware she had been cheating the last few years, but either way it's a really unsatsisfying way to dissolve all the tension in that episode. "Sleeplesss" I suppose is a Halloween episode, but it's just really bizarre.

Season 2 ratings:

A Beautiful Mine - 8/10

Sorry Wrong Era - 8/10

Rescue Jet Fusion - 7.5/10
Beach Party Mummy - 9.5/10

Retroville 9 - 2/10

Grumpy Young Men - 8.5/10

Return of the Nanobots - 9.5/10

Jimmy/Timmy Power Hour - 3/10

Nightmare in Retroville - 8/10

Attack of the Twonkies - 9.5/10

Jimmy For President - 8.5/10

Monster Hunt - 5/10

Sheen's Brain - 6/10

Maternotron Knows Best - 5/10

Send in the Clones - 9.5/10

The Great Egg Heist - 8/10

Out Darn Spotlight - 9/10

The Junkman Cometh - 5/10

Foul Bull - 6/10

The Science Fair Affair - 4/10

Men At Work - 9/10

The Mighty Wheezers - 8.5/10

Billion Dollar Boy - 7/10

All in all this season is an improvement over the first. A lot of the characters experienced rapid growth throughout the season - particularly Sheen, Cindy, and Libby. The only downside is that (with a few exceptions) they have abandoned the sitcom format of the first season and now the action/adventure element has taken over entirely - which doesn't mean that the show is still funny as heck - the humor, when at its best, is actually better than that of season 1. This season is known by a lot of fans as the "sweet spot" for the series - just the right amount of comedy, the right amount of drama - at this point in the series they had created one of the best casts of characters on TV and knew exactly when to use each character.

Here are some of the episodes I want to elaborate on:

"The Retroville 9" - I despise this episode. Why? It's pointless - and even a little heartbreaking. It starts off kind of decent, if a bit cliched - the "baseball failure" thing is done a lot in kids' comedies, and in this show it doesn't even make sense - not all of the characters would be this horrible at baseball, especially not Cindy - she is shown to be pretty athletic most of the time. And also, Butch goes to Retroville Elementary, so he wouldn't be playing on a different team. When Jimmy cheats, though, the episode goes downhill. We see all of the characters thanking Jimmy, feeling so good, not knowing that they're cheating. Jimmy doesn't tell them. Cindy's family, who clearly is very happy about her new athletic success, keeps giving her cool stuff to use, and Jimmy doesn't let them use it. FInally, when they are playing in Japan, Jimmy admits he was cheating all along, and then they FAIL. And then Sheen gets burnt.

Just really unpleasant all the way through and the definition of mean-spirited. Probably one of this show's only absolute scum episodes.

"Billion Dollar Boy" - has one of the best plots in the entire series. In this ep and "King of Mars" they do the love triangle thing much better than in the crossovers or Betty Quinlan episodes, IMO. I had to bump it down a lot because the attempts at humor were shoehorned and annoying (I dislike the burping scene), and also the plot doesn't really get going until like three minutes in.

"Monster Hunt" I would probably enjoy much more if I had seen the JAWS movies.

"The Science Fair Affair" is cruel to both Jimmy and Cindy.

"Out Darn Spotlight" and "Send in the Clones" would be perfect episodes if they had different endings.

I think the only thing I think is pretty funny about Retroville 9 is Sheen towards and at the end of the ep, when he first asks Tremendous Jackson about UltraLord and gets a positive response from him, then when he later insults Bonzilla about his height and gets scorched... The rest of the ep is just "meh" for me, though Butch eating his hat was pretty funny... :P

Yeah, I didn't agree with how cruel The Science Fair Affair treated Jimmy and Cindy, and it was kinda stupid that Principal Willoughby went with Cindy's plan only cuz her rhyme was catchy... Libby's invention was pretty cool, though, and when Cindy accidentally used it to indirectly admit that she missed competing with Jimmy was pretty amusing...

For me, Out Darn Spotlight was just meh, though Nick breaking his leg yet again was kinda funny, and so was Jimmy using his weather machine to ruin the moment between Nick and Betty... I do agree that its ending could've been done differently; I mean, that crazy tornado the weather machine caused that propelled the school onto the tip of Mount Everest??  Doesn't really make sense, and it doesn't explain how the school went back to its normal spot in later eps... >.<

I actually thought Send in the Clones was pretty good, as I have that one pretty much memorized.  I really like the idea of numerous clones of the main protagonist causing havoc, and the ep introduces us to Evil Jimmy, my fave JN villain.  And it makes sense that he would be smart enough to avoid being frozen solid as opposed to the other clones, and when he shows up again, it makes sense that the crowd would be irritated with Jimmy after they thought he'd gotten rid of all the clones, therefore they'd chase after him at the very end of the ep... :D The added bit of EJ showing up at the last second adds to the suspense in preparation for when he returns in The Trouble With Clones... ;)

About the rhyme in Science Fair Affair, that was for me one of the only really funny parts (besides the Sheen lawyer scenes). Even though WIlloughby is into the arts and stuff, he isn't that smart either since in Hall Monster he got Albert Einstein mixed up with his sister. The taking away Jimmy's prize is the only thing I don't understand at all; I think when Cindy lost in the end they were trying to give her a comeuppance for banning Jimmy from the science fair only so she could win, but because the actual conflict was Bolbi's fault it comes across weird.

In Out Darn Spotlight the humor was pretty incredible and probably the ultimate school play episode. They use so many classic tropes which work perfectly for the characters (the guy who forgets his lines, the guy who doesn't project, the unexpectedly good actor etc). Even though Cindy being a diva is funny one of the only things that would improve the episode is if it were about Jimmy and Cindy instead of Jimmy and Betty (Betty's just as non-canon as Planet Sheen in my book.) Everyone's distaste for Sheen was pretty funny (though even better in Attack of the Twonkies). The chaos is a bit too much for me in the last five or so minutes of the ep.

Retroville 9 was an alright episode humor-wise; Hugh getting hit by all those baseballs is one of the only times that they randomly injected Hugh to an episode for extra laughs that actually worked IMO. I mainly disliked it for its depressing plot.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more with all those points; Hugh is pretty good comic relief, and I prefer the J/C pairing WAY more than J/B...  ODS should've centered on that instead; imagine how differently that ep would've gone...  Although, I think you forgot one to critique, Win, Lose, & Kaboom!...  That's also in Season Two... ;) With that said, I really could've done without Jimmy's grandstanding in that special, and his moments with April don't serve much purpose...  When I first saw that special, instead of usually wanting to smack Cindy for her dramatics, it was Jimmy I wanted to smack for around the first half of it!  Had me facepalming through that whole first half... <_< Glad he eventually came to his senses, though he still tried to argue with Meldar after winning the space car with his crew...

Win, Lose and Kaboom! in production order is the first season 3 episode. I'm going in production remember? That's why Love Potion and Holly Jolly Jimmy were counted as season 1.

Also I think Hugh was a better comic relief in season 1. One thing I forgot to mention in my overall look at the season is while most of the characters got more developed, I think only Carl and Hugh got worse. Carl and Jimmy had a very close friendship in season 1 and the movie which really only shines through in "Beach Party Mummy" and "The Feud" in this season. I feel like further into the series he seems fairly aloof and more interested in food and llamas than what's actually going on. Not to say I don't like him (he's still my 3rd favorite behind Sheen and Cindy), he was just better before.

Hugh, despite being another top five character, was way funnier in the first season when he would try to give advice to Jimmy and go completely off topic - in season 1 though he actually felt like, you know, a father, and it was clear that both Jimmy and Judy always enjoyed his company. He was such a breath of fresh air from other dumb dad characters who would just wreak havoc among their families and others.

Unlike in s1, in s2 his moments feel shoehorned and not as natural - "Billion Dollar Boy", as I said, would be better without him IMO. In "Science Fair Affair" he doesn't really contribute much either, to the humor or otherwise. He also had character derailment sometimes to seem meaner or more chaotic than in season 1; his derailment is what brought down "The Feud" by a lot for me despite it being the best showcase of Carl and Jimmy's friendship in this season.

Oh, gotcha, duh...  Silly me... :P You make some valid points here, very commendable... ;) In my opinion, by the way, even though Jimmy does seem to get more arrogant as the seasons progress, he'll always remain my fave!  Plus, his future self is pretty cute to me, good or bad future... ^_^

Jimmy - yeah - Jimmy’s characterization is really inconsistent. On the one hand he’s fairly polite to most people (except for Cindy) and he doesn’t seem to like to randomly bully people or start arguments (Cindy usually initiates that). On the other hand, though, sometimes the way he treats his friends is pretty disgusting - he’s constantly doing experiments on them, constantly doing things that could kill them, always insisting on bringing them with him on his adventures - remember in “Auggh! Wilderness” when he knew Hugh was a terrible camper so he BLACKMAILED Carl and Sheen into going?

About him being arrogant more I only really noticed that in WLK! IMO he became more likable as the series went on, I tended to side with Cindy in season 1 episodes but in seasons 2 and 3 Jimmy seemed far less competitive with her than the other way around and he started using his genius for less selfish reasons

Oh, I'd forgotten he'd blackmailed in that ep since I don't watch that one too often... ^^; Something about them playing with Pamona Beach Debbie dolls, or action figures, as Sheen insisted they were. He was kinda snobbish in the first season, though he does seem to have more of a temper in the other two seasons, like in the N-Men ep or The Junkman Cometh, or Carl Wheezer, Boy Genius...  Win, Lose, & Kaboom, as well, which made me wanna smack the fire outta him! <_< I would've if he was real! <_< However, he's still very loveable in my opinion; he just has his share of shortcomings and faults like any other person.  I mean, hey, what person doesn't?  Aside from those awful "Mary-Sue/Gary-Stu" characters I've heard about... But anyway, I love how dang intelligent he is; man, I wish I could be that smart! <3 He loves science, too, which is utterly awesome!! :kawaii: (By the way, your posting rank just changed, dude, sweet!)

Yeah, I'm now one of Cindy's best lines.

But I think Jimmy's beyond not being a "Gary Stu". I think he's one of the most morally questionable protagonists in a kids show I've seen.

His temper is not one of his problems though. In "The N-Men" and "Carl Wheezer" and "Junkman" he was pushed to his limits. I was talking more about the snobbish stuff. He also happily watched Carl electrocute himself in "Krunch Time"

He did def get better though. In season 2 he was an average good boy, in season 3 he was practically a superhero (except for How to Sink a Sub lol).

I think that, while Cindy is more arrogant, Jimmy is more selfish. There’s a difference.

Cindy puts others down cause of her inferiority complex.

Jimmy simply doesn’t take others’ emotions into account when he speaks. (Save for with Carl a bit in season 1 and the movie, which is the one thing he got worse about as the show went on.)

Now to do season 3.

Win, Lose and Kaboom! - 10/10
The Tomorrow Boys - 8/10
Fundemonium - 7/10
Lights! Camera! Danger! - 9/10
Clash of the Cousins - 7/10
Who’s Your Mommy? - 1.5/10
Stranded - 10/10
Jimmy Goes to College - 6.5/10
Incredible Shrinking Town - 10/10
Crouching Jimmy Hidden Sheen - 8/10
One of Us - 8/10
Vanishing Act - 1/10
The Trouble with Clones - 9/10
Carl Wheezer Boy Genius - 1/10
The Evil Beneath - 7/10
The N Men - 9.5/10
Flippy - 10/10
Who Framed Jimmy Neutron - 7/10
King of Mars - 5/10
El Magnifico - 9/10
Best in Show - 4/10
My Big Fat Spy Wedding - 6/10
How to Sink a Sub - 10/10
Lady Sings the News - 7.5/10
League of Villains - N/A

I have not seen the last episode all the way through, the big specials are always intimidating. I know what happens in it, but to rate it I need to see exactly how it’s done in the episode.

This season used to be my favorite when I first joined the site, but really the only thing about it better than the first two seasons is the animation and maybe voice acting. There is definitely a freshness and a crispness to the season. But really despite being more dressed up than the first two seasons the episodes here are pretty hit-or-miss. One thing I’ve heard is that John A. Davis was less involved in this season, and it was more up to the writers to decide the creative direction of the series. And that’s a problem - each writer had a different idea where they wanted the series to go. Really I blame the decline in quality on Steven Banks (the main writer on this season) as he added a ton of unnecessary wacky humor to the show that would be more in place in the show he and Keith Alcorn created, Planet Sheen.

TO ELABORATE:

“Win, Lose and Kaboom!” Overall a very pleasant episode and one I think everybody likes. It has just the right amount of all of the characters (even the parents!), some nice plot devices and a great reality/game show parody. It should definitely go down in history as one of the finest animated television specials (even though it probably won’t.) The animation is amazing and way ahead of its time. The only thing I did not like was April.

“Who’s Your Mommy?” Keith Alcorn said this was his favorite episode. Crazy. It’s extremely weird and so wrapped up in surrealism it loses the slice-of-life charm that was in so many of the earlier episodes. I know it’s kind of a meme since “Haha Carl gets preggers” but really the plot is just frustrating, especially since everyone is completely oblivious to the danger his pregnancy may pose (Even Cindy, “the smartest girl in Retroville”, and Carl’s freaking father!) And then it ends with Carl and Sheen eating alien cake stuff while Jimmy, the only tolerable character in the episode, gets chased around by an alien? What the heck?

It gets a very slightly higher rating since the first three or four minutes of the episode were sort of funny.

“Stranded” even if this episode is pretty much mostly fluff it did make me cry (which is very rare for TV) so I have to give it a lot of credit for that. Carl and Sheen’s exchanges throughout the episode were also quite funny.

“Incredible Shrinking Town” - Steven Banks’ comedy-centric writing actually worked here!!! It sort of reminded me of an episode from the heyday in late season 1/early season 2 because it had a nice, relatable premise, made Jimmy fairly likable, and overall it just had a charm that was very rare for this late in the series. Not to mention, shrink rays are my favorite sci-fi plot.

“Vanishing Act” - Basically nothing good here. The basic premise of Jimmy liking something to impress Betty is a ripoff of Out, Darn Spotlight. Cindy being a jealous jerk is a ripoff of every other Betty episode! The alternate universe crap has been done in the Hypercube scenes of “Holly, Jolly Jimmy” and will be done again in “The Trouble with Clones”! I would honestly say it’s too weird even for a science show. One other thing - in earlier episodes they at least tried to make the things happening sound scientifically plausible. This episode just turns to magic.

“The Trouble with Clones” - I used to not like this episode but upon rewatch it’s actually really good. The dark/weird humor they pulled off here in a way most of season 3 couldn’t. Seeing all the characters’ evil versions was hilarious - in a sense I wish their personalities were actually opposite (they only really did that with Evil Carl), but they’re still hilarious. The highlight is probably Cindy and Libby giving Nick a wedgie, I don’t know why but that scene’s funny. And guess what - the Evil Clone World’s morals are so twisted it’s almost like real society today!

“Carl Wheezer Boy Genius” - there is nothing I can say about this episode that hasn’t been said already.

“Best in Show” really dumb episode. Everyone’s a jerk except Jimmy. It’s not one of the worst of the season becuase there are some funny scenes and a happy ending.

“My Big Fat Spy Wedding” - would’ve been better if not for the repeated use of deus ex machine (look it up)

“El Magnifico” a really sweet story about Sheen’s life that are very rare.

“How to Sink a Sub” - my favorite episode.

Very well put, dude; though, I am a sucker for anything J/C related, even that bit in Vanishing Act, so to each our own... ^^; I fully respect your opinions on each of these...  Since you haven't seen League of Villains all the way through, I know a site where you can see it: https://www.wcostream.net/ ;) Lemme know what you think of the site...  You can watch a bunch of other cartoons you like there, too! ^_^

I noticed you gave JG2C a 6.5 rating; I'd give it the same...  It only gets that high a rating in my opinion cuz of the humor in it, Jimmy's stunt and Carl and Sheen's antics, not to mention Seymour getting busted in the end and Jimmy coming home to a nutso flea-ridden house thanks to Hugh...  What keeps it from getting a higher rating is how cruel the college kids, especially Seymour, were to Jimmy and the fact that Judy and the others felt like they had to act like they didn't miss him...  That's weak on their part... <_< And I can't stand Seymour for what he did, either...  Jerkface... :mad: What are your thoughts on the ep, or did you already explain them before? ^^;

Oh, that episode I was almost considering giving a higher rating as I really like how it featured Jimmy’s family a lot, that’s the time of vibe you don’t usually get in season 3; to have everyone just sort of hanging out and not trying to save the world or anything - I mainly deducted points for Seymour and for not showing Cindy’s reaction to him going to college. It disappoints me that in none of the episodes where Jimmy is absent do we see how Cindy takes it. I am glad that Seymour got his comeuppance though. It shocks me that they got away with having a 20-or 18-or19-year old make an 11-year old strip in a kids show.

I have used that site in the past to do wiki transcripts so I can quickly switch back and forth tabs and it is good, but for my official watching I use the recent complete series DVD (which actually has the episodes in HD which is pretty neat). As for J/C it helps episodes that are already good but I don’t like an episode for that, though as you said, to each’s own

I feel the exact same way; I wish they'd shown her reaction to him going there.  I wonder how that would've gone... :blink2: And yeah, I hate that Seymour tricked him into doing that...  Other shows have done something similar, though not to the extent of a colleague or classmate tricking another into doing that...  What a freaking moron... :grr:

Probably not as bad as Officer Tubbs making cars crash all over the place and the Mayor almost running Cindy over because he’s playing air guitar in “Best in Show”. That’s why I hate that episode now.

Also I just remembered now - I believe I have seen "League of Villains" all the way through and I remember liking it, but I also remember liking several other season 3 episodes that I have since changed my tune on, so I'll have to re-watch it.

Yeah, you said it...  Probably one of the worst things a character has done on the show to another character... All why I can't stand that creep Seymour; plus, he gives me the creeps just looking at him and hearing him speak...  If he was real, I'd really let him have it... <_<

Yeah, definitely do that!  That's what I'd do in that situation... ;)
