Anyone else watch Steven Universe?
 

 
I'm about 20 episodes in so far...it starts out a little slow, but the world-building is REALLY cool. I wasn't crazy about the main character at first, but he's starting to grow on me. Plus, dude, the gems are f*cking awesome

Tim LOVES Steven Universe. It's one of his favorite shows. I don't know how many episodes I've seen (ten, maybe? If you count each eleven minute segment as a new episode), but I'm not really enjoying it. I love the relationships between the charactersn (Steven simultaneously annoys the shit out of me and manages to make me smile because of how much he loves everybody so unconditionally), and I appreciate the animation style, but to be honest the actual plots of the episodes themselves have been really boring. I'm a little apprehensive about continuing, because generally speaking, if I end up actually liking a show, I get hooked right away. I've yet to experience a time when I saw more than two episodes of a show's first season before getting hooked, and having that show actually end up in my favorites. All the ones I can rattle off in my top five hooked me in about three minutes.

The plots are definitely prosaic and childish, especially in the beginning. It's like there are these super simple little stories playing out against the backdrop of a much bigger, more interesting mythology. And yeah, Steven starts out being frustratingly incompetent. Then, around episode 25, you get a hint that things are going to shift to something like, galactic in scale. It's hard not to be hooked after that

 

I definitely sympathize with complaints about the show's pacing, though. It reveals its own secrets too slowly. Even though the episodes are only 10 minutes long, that's a loooot of story to sit through before you get to the really cool crap about fusion and the gem war and all that other high-drama stuff. Definitely worth it if you have nothing better to do, though (like me!)

Yeah, I think 25 episodes is too long to start revealing hints of a larger overarching plot. That's way too slow for me. I'm not going to sit through that many pointless, childish plots before getting to the good stuff. I'd rather rewatch my favorites I've seen a million times.

I'm on episode 49 now, and shit has gotten SO. EFFING. REAL. Oh my lord. The tone of the series has completely changed. I am so addicted.

New episodes of Steven Universe started airing today. Both me and my brother have a comment about it. I want to point out that Connie and Steven are such unbelievable dorks that I can't even deal anymore. My brother pointed out it was episode 69 and then raised his eyebrows suggestively.

 

 Also Connie's mother has odd ideas about gang members. In other news,,, Oh no, not the abacus!

The overarching plot of season 2 is revealed. Seems like the cluster will emerge by the time the finale comes around. That will be an epic battle. Also, is the new episode trying to make me ship Steven and Peridot?

Remember that their ages aren't real according to pearl in the "So many birthdays" episode.

I would argue that Steven's age is real. He may be capable of altering his appearance to fit his mental age, but since he's half human, age DOES affect him to at least some degree.
