There is one program that I find extremely helpful for many kinds of stuff, from looking at space objects, to 3D modeling. It's called Celestia. Here is a link, a short description from the site and a screenshot.

Celestia

Welcome to Celestia
... The free space simulation that lets you explore our universe in three dimensions. Celestia runs on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X.

Unlike most planetarium software, Celestia doesn't confine you to the surface of the Earth. You can travel throughout the solar system, to any of over 100,000 stars, or even beyond the galaxy.
All movement in Celestia is seamless; the exponential zoom feature lets you explore space across a huge range of scales, from galaxy clusters down to spacecraft only a few meters across. A 'point-and-goto' interface makes it simple to navigate through the universe to the object you want to visit.
Celestia is expandable. Celestia comes with a large catalog of stars, galaxies, planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft. If that's not enough, you can download dozens of easy to install add-ons with more objects.

Here's some pics of the last 3 major planets and the first minor planet that I made. "Why didn't you do Jupiter?" you ask? Cuz I'm just unsure of whether it'll look right if I did it... Anyway, here they are!!

Saturn

Uranus. And it's pronounced YUR-uh-nus, NOT yer-AY-nus!!! XD

Yesh, I did. Took me a pretty good while to finish 'em, too! The only reason I haven't done Jupiter is cuz I'm not sure how it'll turn out and if it'll turn out right or not. Plus, it's the biggest, and the most colorful. I'm not so sure I could pull that off SO easily with Paint like I did the others...

Ooh, ooh, can I join??????????? I love astronomy and I had crazy dreams to be an astronaut when I was little.
That's a really cool banner. I also have wondered loads of times if there is any life there. You wouldn't believe how many questions I asked my dad on that topic and his replies were all "Of course there is. Scientific calculations prove it!" I always watch cartoons with alens in 'em, like Ben 10 and Ben 10: Alien Force. Yep, I'm crazy for Aliens. I. AM. OBSESSED, so can I join??

Ok, I'm not into astronomy myself, but I thought I'd mention that the International Astronomical Union has proclaimed 2009 as the International Year of Astronomy to celebrate the 400 years since Galileo Galilei used an early version of the telescope to study the night sky in 1609.

Since I teach astronomy now, I really should join this club!

My favorite object in space is the Andromeda Galaxy. Awesome that you included it in your banner, Emily!
